The Wisdom of Finance is worth reading if only to marvel at Mihir Desai’s amazing mind, wide range, and exciting set of insights. The book undersells itself, claiming to use a range of novels, movies, music, TV shows, philosophy and history to better understand and illuminate finance. And it certainly does that, covering the full set of topics: insurance, asset pricing, corporate finance, principal-agent problems and bankruptcy among other topics. But the book is about much more, including better understanding literature and our own lives. To give one example that illustrates the astonishing range of Desai’s understanding, consider his illustration of leverage by comparing George Orwell (who went into semi-seclusion for years to write 1984) to Jeff Koons (who at his peak employed 150 people to produce his ideas). He uses this not just to understand the role of leverage in the financial system but also to introspect about his own life where he is on the Orwell-Koons spectrum, and how that relates to happiness. And did I mention the astonishing range? We have gotten used to Jane Austen and Leo Tolstoy showing up in economics books. But everything from ancient Greek tragedy to Kanye West? All effortless incorporated in many cases with interesting juxtapositions, like the Orwell-Koons example. If this enjoyable and thought provoking book does not convince you of the wisdom of finance it will at least convince you of the wisdom of Mihir Desai.

After reading Dr. Desai’s excellent book twice, I could still benefit from a book club discussion to comprehend the enormous challenges that “The Wisdom of Finance” takes on. Thus, I present an amateur review of a complex problem from a do-it-yourselfer (DIY) regular investor. But the implications of combining humanity and finances have never been greater. The world is changing, the financial industry and the humanities had better get prepared for this inevitable evolution. The most asked question in recorded human history is: “What is the meaning of life?” Dr. Desai attempts to connect the meaning of life and the meaning of finances. His attempt is a tall order; other authors ventured into this murky and unexplored area of life and money. Think about this challenge: the author is connecting the dots between two opposing schools of thought: 1. the sophisticated, intimidating, and the respected “quantitative” discussion with the, 2. lesser status and less respected “qualitative” analysis (stories and memoirs). Neither school embraces the other.Dr. Desai humanized the old-fashion cold and heartless world of finance by relating it to holier-than-thou experts on literature, history, philosophy, music, movies, and religion. The goal of the author is to place finance where it should belong, as a life-affirming idea, so that this combination might lead to making the world a better place for everyone. The author discussed community and personal relationships all through his book. Currently, the online discussion forums are about communities of tens of thousands of the public coming together and helping financial newbies with spending, debts, diversification, investment theories, becoming a DIYer, monitoring your financial adviser, etc. all for FREE! These groups are only going to get bigger and more influential. Since the internet and online connections started in 1995, thousands of regular investors are happily and successfully managing their portfolios with online monitoring tools. More recently, Robo “advisers” are going to get more precise and more customizing for individuals. If Tesla Motors develops auto driving, then someday, Robo technology will successfully monitor our portfolios because the technology takes the unpredictable human emotions out of the equation, and the calculations are error free. That’s awesome.Savvy individual investors and some in the financial planning profession complain that our family and friends (and the general public) are not interested in personal finance. The reasons are complicated and costly. The author’s introduction and his final chapter, “Why Everybody Hates Finance?” explains why people are wary and distrustful of the financial industry. But people need to embrace the financial industry because “ignorance of it has never been more costly.”The problem with 99% of online discussions is that the quantitive aficionados dominate the investing discussions. The unfortunate results are intimidating at best, and a turn-off at worse. Some newbies could not define a common stock let alone debating with confidence about the yield curve. Don’t get me wrong, I have learned much, and I am personally respectful of the quantitative analyses side and will never need a financial adviser to manage my 7-figure portfolio. I learned all I know from books and these investment forums. The author is surprised with each new class of his highly elite and probably some of the most gifted and talented college students on the planet are also intimidated by personal finance! I believe this is the primary reason the author wrote this book. The author is hoping that the humanities can be used as an additional tool to help everybody perceive that everyday life might be more helpful than we now think.Like the author, I am shocked that many of my friends who are smarter and more talented than me are simply not interested or just don’t get this investing thing! I consider myself incredibly lucky that I could embrace the financial value system head-on and make it my own. But that’s my qualitative story which is not welcomed either by the financial profession or understood by my friends, and that’s what the Wisdom of Finance is trying to do.When the author thinks that the quants’ (the financial professionals) primary purpose is to intimidate people with formulas and spreadsheets, I had to read this book. Most people’s only experience with finance may be watching and listening to CNBC’s endless and familiar panel of financial “experts,” or hearing their favorite uncle’s investing tip of the day. Much of the financial advice industry, especially the insurance industry, exploits the public’s natural stock market fear. I think we can all agree (both the public and many in the financial advice profession) that to keep the public as naïve and dependent for as long as possible is a perverse incentive to stay in business. 99% of the topics discussed on the mainstream financial networks are 99% garbage for long-term wealth building. Consequently, the financial industry can charge outrageous adviser and investment fees under the “suitability” standard, estimated by the Department of Labor in 2015 to be $17 billion!Seventeen billion dollars is a direct reflection of the magnitude the problem with personal finance. The stakes are too high. Far too many of the public will remain lost in a world of spreadsheets on the one hand while trying to understand Shakespeare’s “Merchant of Venice” on the other. The following are my favorite chapters:Chapter 1: “Wheel of Fortune” Understanding that life events are random, and that uncertainty will never go away. To deny uncertainty in relationships, jobs, weather/climate, natural disasters, our health, family and friends is denying reality at a high cost in an otherwise preventable emotional suffering and financial loss. It’s not what happens “out there” it’s how we plan and respond to what life throws at us. Shit happens to the best of us.How misunderstanding the hard science of probability supports the delusional benefits of gambling, which are NONE, and the appropriate role of insurance to protect us from some but not all of life’s uncertainty.Chapter 2: “Risky Business” Understanding risk, and our unique risk tolerance, is the ultimate task for all investors. The author supports Modern Portfolio Theory. The diversified portfolio is still the best and only "free lunch."Chapter 3: “On Value” IMO, this is the author’s best chapter. While I think his “Parable of the Talents” is interesting, it's a weak augment about predicting value. Some of this chapter should have been in the Risky Business segment. He supports passive investment strategies of luck over skill (big time!) and managing beta rather than depending on alpha: “The lesson of finance is one of humility…. The hardest aspects of the … --worldview of many practitioners of finance—can usefully be tempered with humility, generosity toward others, and a keen appreciation for the force of luck in life” (p. 74).The “force of luck” in our lives is HUGE! I am lucky that I was born in the U.S. with parents who did not abuse me. I could have been born in Bangladesh or with drug-abusing and violent parents. I am lucky to be alive as a cancer survivor. I have the where with all and the motivation to manage my investments and living with my financial mistakes, and taking responsibility for those mistakes instead of blaming Wall Street or the “system.” Yeah, I worked learning to manage my investments, but I was lucky that I had enough common sense to carry out that goal. Here are two areas I also worked long and hard too but failed: 1. I wanted to be a therapist in private practice, got the training and the license, and but it never worked out for me, 2. On my solo flight in my private pilot's training, I crashed landed my plane. Luckily, I was not hurt, and the plane received slight damage (There is the streak of luck again. I could have been killed or disabled for the rest of my life). But I worked hard in my training, but never got the private pilot’s license for obvious reasons.Chapter 4: “Becoming a Producer” The author explains how capitalism has changed from the simple mom and pop enterprises to huge multinational corporations which many and complex interdependent departments, each with a specialty. These businesses are so complex that the owners have delegated their responsibilities to professional managers. The author takes a page out of John Bogle's book, “The Battle for the Soul of Capitalism,” when this author wrote: “We have managers pursuing short-run profits rather than long-term value, investors taking on too much risk because of screwed-up incentives….” Bogle would agree 100%!Chapter 5: “No Romance Without Finance” Establishing long-term personal relationships especially with your spouse to building wealth is obvious and profitable connections. The author articulated two glaring and historical examples of marriages lasting longer than one generation: 1. The fifteen century Florence, and, 2. the English financial family—the Rothschilds. Both my nephew and I married well. My marriage of 40 years led both of us public school teachers to amass wealth well above my expectations (we started with nothing). My nephew and his wife owned a very successful farming business and made them multi-millionaires. All of us are on the same financial page regarding frugal living, investing, working hard, and saving from day 1.Chapter 7: “Failing Forward” The author discusses the interesting and historical but obscure figure, Robert Morris, and why our U. S. history books don't mention this respected revolutionary patriot. He made mistakes. The rest of this chapter is noteworthy because as newbie investors we will make mistakes. Life is about making mistakes, and what differentiates success from failure is one’s reaction. All the “how to be successful” books have said over and over, learn from your mistakes and move on.Learning from mistakes sounds simple. However, our culture takes the harsh view of failure. No doubt failure is personal, and there is not much help “out there.” When I flunked the 2nd grade, I was convinced I was retarded, and the rest of my k-12 education was ruined. It was when I was adult, after years of psychotherapy, that I could confront those painful feelings that surround failure. It took a long time to recover, but I did, earning a Ph.D. at UCLA at age 48. The author writes the obvious, “Failures can’t be stigmatized if they are to be the source of learning.”Chapter 8 “Why Everyone Hates Finance” Instead of using literature to explain the complicated mechanisms of finance through stories, he returns to literature to explain why finance is hated! The author cites one of Tolstoy’s short stories to illustrate how a peasant becomes wealthy with buying the land he worked on. After his first crops turned out to be so profitable, he bought his neighbor’s land and paid off all his debts. But it wasn’t enough. The former peasant was tempted with the prospect of getting more land. Unfortunately, he overworked himself and died.My goodness, with stories like that from one of our most accomplished literature author in history, no wonder we have so many who are not interested in personal finance. I don’t know about you, but I think most of us don’t want the negative implications and severe consequences of greed. In this case, the land he owned was not “Enough” (Bogle’s book “Enough” will be discussed shortly). If you think greed will not happen to you, think again! Both my late husband and I got the greed bug. We profited quickly from our meager investments right out of the financial gate in 1995 at the beginning of the technology bubble. We invested our money in the narrow technology sector. For the next five years, our portfolio rose to the stratosphere, and you know perfectly well where this is going. Starting on March 10, 2000, and for the next two years, we helplessly watched 70% of our portfolio get washed away, as if hurricane Harvey came to town, over $1.1 million vanished. The author then proposes the idea that since wanting more is against our society’s basic ethics, and that finances and investing have inherent risks of losing, the usual reaction is distaste at best and hating as worse. People have a natural aversion to risk, and they are naturally fearful of the stock market. There are good historic reasons for being fearful. 2008, 2000, and 1929 are the constant reminders to stay the hell out of the stock market, and the precise reason why insurance companies are so profitable. The author cites behavior science studies that show that people experience more intense negative feelings of losing a dollar than positive feelings of gaining a dollar. He ended this last chapter and the book with a positive and compelling story about a woman named Alexandra. She understood the difference between luck and skill, and most important, the difference between “tales of hollow accumulation and insatiable desire” with “tales of heart and hard work.” I don’t have to tell you which tales the author recommends. In summary, the problem with previous qualitative attempts to make sense of finances for the greater good is that they are unique to the author’s favorite stories, personal knowledge, and experiences. This book replicates previous work but also takes it to a higher level. The connections between finance and worldly pearls of wisdom are unfortunately for academic readers than for the general public. It is not an easy read for readers who know their personal finance.Speaking of previous work, I was perplexed that the author did not cite the great work of Jack Bogle, the now legendary pioneer of Vanguard and his indexing contribution. Vanguard has developed into the largest and most respected mutual fund company in the world (Yeah, Blackrock is bigger, but it serves primarily institutions). I believe Vanguard’s success is due in large part to what “The Wisdom of Finance” is trying to articulate. Bogle's ideas would fit with the author’s and his chapters 3, 5, and 8. Mr. Bogle’s two books, “The Battle for the Soul of Capitalism,” mentioned previously, and his direct work of connecting finance to the humanities in the book, “Enough.” His indexing strategy alone gave us ordinary investors a huge (and extremely low cost) advantage by offering passive strategy investments (Evidence found in chapters 3, 5 and 8). Because of the built-in none/low trading of indexing, much of our investment money that would have gone to Wall Street’s traders are deposited in our pockets instead (Chapter 8).In Bogle’s Introduction of his book “Enough,” he explains the origin of the unusual title. He describes a party given by a billionaire and which guests, author Kurt Vonnegut informs his colleague and friend, Joseph Heller, “that their host, a hedge fund manager, had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his wildly popular novel “Catch 22” over its whole history. Heller responds, Yes, but I have something he (hedge fund manager) will never have…enough.”I hope that The Wisdom of Finance will be a small stepping stone to a new academic discipline. The author writes that both the literary (qualitative) and scientific (quantitative) disciplines need to cooperate to explore this “largely unexplored terrain.” I hope that eventually, this combined work will become mainstream. But it will require a lot more work, discussion, and verifiable goals. We are not even close yet. In the meantime, we regular investors and readers will connect our dots to our individual lives so we can make sense of the financial industry. Hopefully, the inclusive and life-affirming discussion of all things financial will replace the current cold, heartless, isolated from life and intimidating financial sophistication. This work has already been satisfied, in my experience, and countless other do-it-yourself investors. But many of my friends, most of my family, and the clear majority of the investing public remain in the financial dark, and that should be everybody’s concern. While this new discipline is currently just a dream, however, much of our civilization and its social, political, and technology developments originated from dreams and dreamers.

One of the best books on finance that I've ever read. Professor Desai is able to show how life and all its messiness and complex is reflected in the world of finance and vice versa. It's really a different kind of book. He takes a complex subject matter and marries it with the humanities in such a seamless way that neither discipline drown each other out but rather compliment each other quite well. I highly recommend this book for the financial industry professional but more so for those who want to understand what finance is REALLY about

The Wisdom of Finance is one of the great books in its league. The contents demonstrates the author's deep appreciation of a wide variety of literature. From Kanye West to Tinder; Mihir demonstrates in a new way, how the world of finance interconnects with our daily lives. The book is filled with funny anecdotes coupled with life lessons. Mihir shares insights on:1. Understanding the trade-off involved in making a career investment and raising a family.2. Knowing when to exercise professional options and not keep waiting for the finest period, t.3. Identifying the low beta and high beta in your network.4. The value of insurance.5. The essence of due diligence in mergers and marriages.I have personally enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it to young adults at the cross-road of risk and reward.

Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book, by Gerard Jones

From The New Yorker

This history of the birth of superhero comics highlights three pivotal figures. The story begins early in the last century, on the Lower East Side, where Harry Donenfeld rises from the streets to become king of the "smooshes"—soft-core magazines with titles like French Humor and Hot Tales. Later, two high-school friends in Cleveland, Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, become avid fans of "scientifiction," the new kind of literature promoted by their favorite pulp magazines. The disparate worlds of the wise guy and the geeks collide in 1938, and the result is Action Comics #1, the début of Superman. For Donenfeld, the comics were a way to sidestep the censors. For Shuster and Siegel, they were both a calling and an eventual source of misery: the pair waged a lifelong campaign for credit and appropriate compensation. Copyright © 2005 The New Yorker

From Booklist

The comic book's early days have received heightened attention in the wake of Michael Chabon's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Kavalier and Clay, about the cutthroat businessmen and naive artists who then populated the industry. Although Jones' history limns dozens of the young writers and artists, most from working-class Jewish neighborhoods and many still teenaged, and the bosses who exploited them, its central figures are Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who launched the superhero genre by creating Superman, only to sell the rights to the character for a pittance and spend decades in obscurity and near-poverty. Jones continues the story through the censorship that nearly destroyed the industry in the 1950s to the 1960s superhero revival that continues today. Jones' experience as a comic-book scripter, albeit decades after the period he chronicles, gives him the advantage over most previous writers on the comics milieu, and his vivid writing suits the subject. But it is his impressively thorough research that makes this one of the most valuable books on a distinctively American storytelling form. Gordon FlaggCopyright © American Library Association. To be sure this book is well researched. It goes deeply into the immigrants (mostly Jewish) who would found the comic book industry (some patience is need for the first fifth of the book as it is not about comics-they had not been invented yet-but it is fascinating to watch the pieces slowly drift together). Though most of the big and small publishers are covered the lynchpin of this narrative is the story of Siegel and Shuster; how they created Superman and how they lost him and their long struggle to get some sort of compensation. To be truthful the author is very even handed in his portrayal of both sides of the struggle. The creators of Superman seemed to have had their one big idea, then they struggled; one with failing eyesight, the other just could not seem to come up with the next big concept creating many failures along the way. Some of the popular myths that we think of as "comic history" are disputed and shown for what they were.Though I might have wanted to hear more about other creators and companies; and that is not to say you don't; I understand that in such a vast field it is important to provide a focus otherwise the book would have been ten times as long. Sometimes I was aghast at how cut-throat the comic industry could be-this is a warts-and-all story and very worth the time to pursue. For more information on EC comics which is intertwined with DC comics seek out a copy of the Mad World of Bill Gaines which really goes deeply in ECs history.

I was a comic book fan from my earliest age to about 10 years ago, when the whole thing seems to have gone to the dogs. I was brought up on the Mexican editions of DC comics, and didn't become familiar with Marvel Comics until I visited the US in the second half of the 1970s and learned to love the cheeky humor and mindless action, plus the wonderful artwork of the Romitas, Buscemas and Ditkos of this world, and their little mannerisms ("true believers", "'nuff said", "excelsior!", "no-prizes" and such). Although I did learn a bit about the origins and evolution of the medium, I must confess I was never too interested about the creators themselves. For me, they were subsumed within the characters and stories they told, drew and inked. I guess this may be a consequence of having learned about comics from reprints of 1960s Superman and Batman books, where the writers and artists were hidden under wraps, and strong individuality was discouraged. Although I knew that Siegel and Schuster created Superman, that Kane and Finger did the same for Batman, and that Lee and a host of other talents (like Kirby, Ditko et a.) gave forth the Silver Age, I didn't know much about the guys themselves, or the business they were in.This book has introduced me to the inner workings of the "House(s) of Ideas", both those of the creators and the businessmen. It is certainly interesting to find out how such basic concepts as secret identity, origin story, motivation, super-villains and love interests came to be, and what was the business model that would enrich a few managers at the expense of some of the creators. I was aware of the essential "American-ness" of comic books (that was, after all, part of the pleasure they gave to a foreigner in the days before color TV and cheap international travel). "The Adventures of Kavalier and Klay" showed me that this was a particular brand of "American-ness", very deeply interwoven with a particular immigrant experience. "Men of Tomorrow" fleshes out this landscape, and populates it with fascinating characters. Even if you are not a comic book fan, it would be a very enjoyable read, since it is not a book for "geeks" and fleshes out all the stories for a general reader. I give it four stars because it could have used more pictures. Memo for the editors: people who read comics like pictures! Put some in in the next edition.

This is a wonderful examination of the men who created one of the most enduring and endearing media in modern times, the comic book. For history buff, pop culture fans, and, of course, comic book "geeks", this book offers an intimate and sometimes alarming (even depressing) account of the birth of the comic book, the screwing of young talent, the greed of companies, and America itself from the early part of the 20th century almost to today.3 complaints, and they are each rather minor (since the book held my attention like few others have):1.) So much attention is spend on 3 or 4 central figures throughout the book that other important creators get the short shift.2.) Not enough is said about comics from the mid 1970's to today. It is as if the writer shot his wad in research and writing about 4/5ths of the way through the book, then rushed through the rest.3.) More photographs and art samples would have made this a more complete experience.Again, if you enjoy American history, popular culture, and/or comic books, this book will hold you in its grip.

Once again, the old adage that truth is stranger than fiction seems to resonate. Michael Chabon's recent fictional history on the comic book pioneers may have been beautifully written but this book is utterly fascinating. People may think that Jones is rehashing events that are `well known' within the annals of comics history but the author does a masterful job of placing this subject within the broader context of popular culture and for that matter, 20th century America. In doing so I can guarantee that you'll never look at a comic book in quite the same way ever again. There's lots of information in here on a variety of subjects: you'll have no problems reading this book twice. Buy it.

I've been a fan of comics for 5 decades now but knew very little of how the whole business got it's start, other than a few anecdotes here and there by surviving creators. This book tells the whole story of the early Golden Age and the beginnings of the Silver Age, warts and all. I love how it even went back to the start of the sci-fi genre and tied in with comics' genesis. Written historically yet suspensefully, 'Men Of Tomorrow' is an absolute great book to buy and read, whether you're a fan of the genre or not.

I think vitamin K2 and vitamin C are reducing the plaque buildup in my arteries. A friend and I took Vitamin K2 as Mk7 for six months and then had a Calcium Score preformed at our local hospital radiology dept. We both saw significant drops in the score. My friend's score a year ago was 3,500. His arteries were severely clogged and his heart valves were ringed with calcium leading to more cardiovascular problems. His calcium score dropped to 2,200. We both had previous catherization and stents installed in our LAD arteries. From the catherization lab film my cardiologist predicted my score would be over 2,000, but after taking Vitamin K2 as MK7 three times a day and mixing Vitamin C as Acerola Cherry powder into all my bottled water, consuming six tablespoons of the powder, each having over 800 mg of natural Vitamin C. Red blots on my lower legs were the result of blood vessels clogged with calcium tearing near the skin. Doctors told me there was nothing i could do to prevent the blood vessel damage or reduce my heart artery plaque. I was determined to find something. Then I went to the NIH publication site and found the Rotterdam Study and another study from Poland both indicating that arterial plaque could be reduced with Vitamin K2. The Polish article is titled, ""Proper Calcium Use: Vitamin K2 as a promoter of Bone and Cardiovascular Health." The author, Katarzyna Maresz, Ph D is President and Scientific Coordinator of the International Science and Health Foundation in Krakow, Poland. Both of the studies indicate there is some hope that the two vitamins will actually reduce arterial plaque. After taking the K2 and Vitamin C for a month, the red blots disappeared. I stopped taking the vitamins and two weeks later, the red blots reappeared. After starting both vitamins again, the blots disappeared again as did dark varicose veins around my ankle. And I feel better than I have for the past 20 years. I am a retired 78 years old Navy and Airline Pilot. .

Great introduction to get information we need. It,s my cure in joints problem. K2 and magnesium, both together I,ve been taking for last 7 months. I had no possibility to even lift a glass of water with my left hand because of calcification problem and bone spur fracture in elbow. Calcifications are lost now, fractured bone spur in elbow is fully absorbed. I was climbing on a hillside using chains mounted in the rock in beautiful polish Tatra mountains a week ago. I thought it was no longer possible but I found a cure. The only souvenir of my illness is not optimistic x-ray picture. My doctor said that there was nothing to be done with my problem except of ultrasound treatment. His method has no possibility to remove the real cause. Human body need a way to balance. Fighting with a secondary symptoms is a waste of time. We need a doctor who is able to find a cause and treat it.

Terse, informative, and readable, Dennis Goodman places great emphasis on the need of Vitamin K2 for proper bone strength, aging, and health. Osteopenia and osteoporosis are degenerative bone diseases but a combination of vitamin K2, vitamin D, and calcium can prevent these conditions from occurring. Often times, we hear about vitamin K1, which is important for blood coagulation but does little in going beyond that to perform the same functions as K2. The mineral calcium relies on K2 for proper absorption to bones. To aid in strong bones and healthy aging vitamin K2 is required to maintain homeostasis between keeping coronary and blood vessels calcium free and maintaining strong bones.Goodman is clear and intentionally repetitive throughout the book, allowing the information to stick for the reader.Great, applicable information.

This is an important book. Everyone age 40 or older should read it. It may help you prevent a heart attack, and it may help you avoid spending your golden years crippled by osteoporosis.Dr. Goodman recommends the Japanese food natto because it contains more vitamin K2 than any other food source. He also warns that most Westerners will not like natto's taste and texture. Nonetheless, you should at least try it a few times. I am a Westerner and have been eating natto every day. It is an acquired taste, like tobacco. You may not like it the first time you try it, but you will soon grow to love it. It is easy to find in any large US city, just look for a Japanese grocery store. You can easily find online videos that show you how to use prepare and eat it.

This author makes a BIG mistake stating that Mk7 is superior to MK4.MK4 is by far the superior and more beneficial and effective form of Vitamin K2 that gets into your soft tissues and brain exponentially more thoroughly and effectively than MK7. Mk7 does have a longer half-life, but this does not make it superior. Do your own proper research and you will find that MK4 is the real difference maker (best take 2 - 3 times per day). There is a lot of marketing hype out there about MK7, but I guarantee you with proper research you will find that it is inferior and much less effective than MK4.Google: Vitamin K2 MK7 vs MK4I did enjoy the illustrations in the book, just wished the author doubled-down on his research and had his book peer reviewed. This should be pulled from the bookstore and corrected.Wishing you the best health!

Not worth reading. Simplistic rehash of what we already know. I was sucked into buying because it was so cheap and covered a subject in which I was interested.

This is a very interesting book. Once we know what our food is lacking when it comes to vitamins and minerals we can take steps to fix things with supplements. Dennis Goodman shows us the way to combat the lack of K2 in our diets.

Critical missing nutrient not being discussed in any heart health focused conversations. The science is there to support we just need to get the word our. Read this short easy to read book and do more research base on the sources sited in this book. Also read the Calcium Paradox...

I was just accepted to medical school this year and will be starting next year. I decided to pick up some books to help me prepare for the intense studying. I found about 80% of this book helpful. The other 20% felt like filler fluff and info on a program specific for Apple iPhone and MacBook users. It kind of reminded me of a "4-hour Workweek" (by Tim Ferriss) for med students. I only have two or three major issues. First of all, in order to access the video content, you have to join the group on Facebook. It took about two weeks of emailing and messaging before I was finally approved. Second, the book is rife with editing errors (spelling, grammar, you're/your, etc.) and could have used a good proof reading. Finally, the study method Dr. Larson lays out seems very exciting, however, he spends a significant part of the book and the videos showing how to use the method with iFlash for Apple Mac products. This product isn't available for Android or PC. So unless you are and Apple user, it's not super helpful. Furthermore, most medical students that I have talked to use Anki. Anki is more universal and has a lot of plug-ins. Luckily, he has started uploading some videos on the usergroup pertaining to Anki, and there are a lot of youtube videos. There is also another book called "Learning Medicine" which goes into more depth on how to use Anki. This book would be good in conjunction with that. I hope Dr. Larson comes out with a 2nd edition when he has more time, that cleans up the typos and adds more Anki stuff.

I bought this for my daughter but wanted to read it myself (I work in a math-intensive area in computer science). I have not quite finished the book but am pleased to say it seems excellent. Much of David's advice on prioritizing, study techniques, and managing one's own life are the same as the principles I've arrived at (via trial and error) over many years of study and work. While medicine and med school are going to be more skewed toward sheer memorizing large *volumes* of material, I would say most of what is in the book will work for studying fields with hard-to-crack conceptual material as well. David's take on learning broadly agrees with other experts in this area, such as Dr. Barbara Oakley ("Learning How to Learn") and Cal Newport. One thing I constantly stress to younger co-workers (and David's book agrees I think) is the insurmountable importance of the sleep-diet-exercise triad. If you get enough sleep, eat healthy, and get a good blast of exercise each day, you should feel great, be mentally sharp, and have the means to excel in med school or whatever else. In particular I see students and young knowledge workers shortchanging sleep--and then they wonder why they can't retain material or get tricky concepts to "click." Please, please, kids, prioritize 8 hours of sleep. I mean that as a parental figure with your success and happiness in mind.Anyway, good book, I recommend for anyone in a knowledge profession, along with the works of Barbara Oakley and Cal Newport. Even if you're a high school student, I would recommend reading. The sooner the better.

Could probably be written in a more concise manner, but thoroughly enjoyed this! As I plan to go to med school in a couple of years, I thought I'd read this, and it has a lot of creative, new ideas. No "read textbook, write notes, hand-write flashcards, read notes, review flashcards, re-read notes"-nonsense. The techniques described in this book are also definitely useful for other subjects, not just subjects in medical school. They are generally good techniques, but especially suited for med school due to the extreme amount of material to get through, and this book presents techniques to get the most out of the material in the least amount of time possible.

I felt a zen-like approach as Dr Larson covers many powerful antidotes for the formidable obstacles facing medical students. Don't skip the all important first chapters on developing balanced long and short term enthusiastic goals which are needed to positively plan and enjoy each day of medical school. Learn how to select the best learning tools for your needs, goals and curriculum, overcome the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve, exam taking strategies and much more.I feel Dr Larson's reviews and consolidates some of the best thinking in modern cognitive psychology for medical students, having recently studied and implemented the strategies himself.Thank- you!

I'm about to start med school in July, so I've read a few books on how to efficiently use my time studying and enjoy the process. Dr. Larson's book teaches its readers how to do just that, even giving us details and exercises (with step-by-step processes) on how to accomplish it. I'm glad I read his book before starting. While I find the book's tips to be useful, I think it could use some editing to have better organization and flow. There are also many grammatical errors throughout (your vs. you're, its vs it's, than vs. then, etc.).

Many of the instructional video's David Larson refers to in this book are seemingly nonexistent. They are supposed to be on his facebook page, but they are nowhere to be found. He does provide some helpful information on how to make flashcards and how to efficiently study.

So much wisdom and creativity in every page! Many of these tools can be applied not just in medical school (though I wish this came out when I was in medical school) but also when trying to achieve balance and learning any topic in any field/career or in any stage of life. Thank you so much Dr. Larson for sharing your knowledge with the world - can't wait for your next book!

This is a must read for any medical student and should be required in medical school. I wish I had had this when I went to school. The book is well written and easy to read. I look forward to future publications from this author.

I bought this as a kindle book for my children on their kindle device. While the content seems to be great, I don't recommend purchasing the electronic version. The font size cannot be increased, it is more like a scanned page, PDF style, with a black font on a grey background. This sadly means that it's a book we won't be reading (and I wish I had put the money towards the paper version instead).

The thing about Chalene Johnson is that you either love her or you just don't get her at all. I happen to love her, which is probably a good thing for a reviewer of this book. Are there earth shattering revelations in this book? Nope, nothing that hasn't been said often and possibly better by other writers on goal setting, time management, fitness and motivation. It's just that Chalene puts her own twist on each segment.I've listened to all of Chalene's podcasts at least once, follow her on all her social media platforms and have taken her free on-line courses. As she repurposes all of her material, it's hard for me to gauge how impactful this book might have been when it first came out. This is a fun, easy read. As a personal development junkie, I still found some of Chalene's suggestions actually enhance advice I've received from other writers in the genre.

I'm sure there are other books out there like this one, and I'm sure that Chalene's style would annoy some people (my husband, for instance; he doesn't appreciate rabbit trails, and although she doesn't take many of them, her ADD really does show up now and then in the book), I really enjoyed the book. However, there is a difference between enjoying a book and letting it impact your life. If you want it to do the latter, my recommendation is that you find a friend to read it with you. Read a chapter a day, and then share your homework with your friend. Not only will you really bond in the 30 days it takes to get through it, but the accountability of knowing someone is expecting to see your work and not wanting to let them down will challenge you to actually do it.I did it. I went through all 30 days. And I have changed so much! I am much more productive, and I am well on my way to accomplishing certain goals that in the past were just dreams. I really like the new chapter in this book, too (I started reading it before this book came out and got the updated version later).Could you get these ideas from other sources? Probably. But I liked this one, and I have not only recommended it to friends, but I even bought one for my SIL!

I've been a huge fan of Chalene's since she came onto the scene around 2006 with the Turbo Jam workouts. I received this book for Christmas the year it came out. Although I enjoyed it then, I only half-heartedly went through day by day and completed each task. At that time, I was more interested in the chapters regarding fitness and nutrition. But recently, I pulled this book off my bookshelf and decided to actually DO IT this time, step by step, day by day. Today I'm a couple weeks in and am really enjoying it! Chalene does a great job of breaking everything down in a way that anyone can follow it and understand the content. It really is so much more than just a diet and fitness book--it can help you organize your life and get into the right mindset to reach your goals. I know for me personally, it really made me think about my priorities. When I feel like flopping down on the couch to binge watch reality TV, I now stop to think, "is this the most productive thing I could be doing right now? Am I making the most out of my time?" It has really put things into perspective. There's been a lot of people stating that they think this is just a book written by Chalene to brag about herself, and while hearing about her successes can tend to make one feel that their life is "subpar," I think you just have to look at it as her providing inspiration. She talks about struggles too which makes it more real. I didn't find it "braggy" at all, I was actually grateful for her personal stories because they were examples of whatever the topic was for that day. Like sometimes she'd be going on about something that didn't quite make sense to me, then she'd throw in her personal experience and then the light bulb would come on and I would understand it better. As far as others not liking the photos throughout the book, I liked them. While obviously the important content of the book is the words, the photos are nice to look at. As a woman who turned 40 this year, I look at those photos of Chalene and feel inspired. I mean, the woman is going on 50 and she looks incredible. I look at her and think to myself that turning 40 doesn't mean giving up and trading cute clothes in for frumpy old lady clothes. Chalene is proof that age doesn't matter--it's how you take care of yourself, not how many birthdays you've had. And hello, she's got a beautiful family--I'd want to show them off too if I were her. Go easy on her, people.I actually love this book so much that I got the Audible version of it too. Now I can listen to it when I'm getting ready for work in the morning, in the shower or going to bed at night. I just turn it on when I go to bed and let it play. It helps me fall asleep and I can't help but hope that hearing it read to me while I sleep will somehow subconsciously ingrain the content into my head :)If you are a fan of Chalene's workouts, give this book a try. If you want to get your life organized but aren't sure where to start, give this book a try. If you want to start a fitness journey but aren't sure where to start, give this book a try. Chalene is awesome and this book will help you if you let it :)

I was excited to read this book after reading reviews, but ended up disappointed. I felt the author took "The Color Purple" and revised it- the main character even does a lot of reference to TCP's characters. I did love the style, and I felt it was a raw, uninhibited look into a culture few see or care to see. Having worked with and been involved with this culture, I was not shocked or surprised. This is one time I enjoyed a movie over a book.Unfortunately, there are no positive male role models in this book. Perhaps because it is reflective of real life; this saddened me. While the education system does what it can, and what it is taught to do, and the welfare system does the same, we see how both systems fail miserably by no fault of its own - history and an overloaded, underpaid system has seen to that. Thus the theme of the book.

I come back to this book again and again. The action plan. The calendar. The goal creating. Ive moved onto the new Smart Journal and am excited to get the newly released version of this book. This on has been passed to friends and come back dog-eared. Safe to say...everyone has gained something from it!

From the Inside Flap

One of the great documents of colonial Mexico, the Codex Chimalpopoca chronicles the rise of Aztec civilization and preserves the mythology on which it was based. Its two complementary texts, Annals of Cuauhtitlan and Legend of the Suns, record the pre-CortA(c)sian history of the Valley of Mexico together with firsthand versions of that region's myths. Of particular interest are the stories of the hero-god Quetzalcoatl, for which the Chimalpopoca is the premier source. John Bierhorst's work is the first major scholarship on the Codex Chimalpopoca in more than forty years. His is the first edition in English and the first in any language to include the complete text of the Legend of the Suns. The precise, readable translation not only contributes to the study of Aztec history and literature but also makes the codex an indispensable reference for Aztec cultural topics, including land tenure, statecraft, the role of women, the tribute system, warfare, and human sacrifice.

Unique and precious, this is a very valuable work that finally allows every being to read one of the most important documents of the Mexicatl civilisation. A must-have and a must-read.

This is an excellent, first class work translating an original manuscript of an interview of a native Mexica shortly after the conquest replete with Aztec myths, creation legends and history. For anyone seriously interested in Aztec times, its a "must".As best as I can tell, it is an unfiltered, unbiased and neutral printing of the informant's own words with many helpful explanatory notes..

The book is an excellent base for the study of prehispanic Mexico. It is extremely useful also for the student of Nahuatl language because it also offers the full original version of these texts in the companion volume. It gives a slightly different point of view to these two fundamental texts from the spanish translation by Primo Feliciano Velazquez. Although less poetic than the spanish version, it is probably closer to the litteral meaning of the nahuatl original, and thus very useful for the understanding of each fragment separately. It is a classical work which can be bought in full confidence.
