This is an inspirational story about a family that I knew when I was growing up in New York state. Jeff was a friend of mine and was full of love and joy. He was one of the most happy people that I have ever met even though he was born with severe challenges. This book chronicles my friends life, his parents struggles and joys, and the family's incredibly strong faith as they Journey with Jeff through his special life. The book is written specifically for inspiration for caregivers of people with special needs, but the story is inspirational for all people. This is one of those books that you keep after you've finished reading and turn to it when life throws you a curveball.

We've become a culture obsessed by reality TV and perhaps have sacrificed some realities of the heart. When you read Journey with Jeff, those heart realities suddenly become very real. With humor, insight, pathos and joy, a mother speaks of what at one time was unspeakable. My friends in Rochester sent me this book after reading about it in their local Sunday paper. We are raising a 2-1/2, very spirited and loving son with DS and, although it's frustrating at times with the extra time needed for various therapies, dr. appts., etc., the joy he brings our lives far outweighs any of those frustrating moments. My friends thought they were sending me a book that would just be an enjoyable read. What they - and I - didn't realize is the impact it would have on my heart! The author tells it like it is and doesn't sugarcoat anything: her sense of loss after learning that Jeff had DS. The anger she felt with people who treated Jeff like a "non-person" ....and the love and appreciation for those who loved him as much as she did. Even the frustration she sometimes felt with the doctors and Jeff's limited abilities. And ALWAYS the joy and faith she had in the Lord and His never failing ability to confirm that He was in control. No matter how difficult things were, she always praised and thanked the Lord for confirmation that Jeff was serving a very important purpose on this Earth: to spread unconditional love to everyone he met. The book is easy to read yet has the ability to profoundly impact your life. Personally, it has helped me realize that I have spent the last 2-1/2 years believing that my son would be the "exception". And he very well may be; no one knows God's plans for our lives. But Sybil's book has helped me "ground" me in more realistic goals for his future and prepare me in case he isn't the exception. She is openly honest about the difficulties of raising a child with special needs and for that I am very grateful. I can only say "Thank you!" to Sybil for being so honest and open and for sharing her heart. I feel like I know her just by reading her story. The book is a "must read" for anyone with a young special needs child, especially if they haven't had much contact with other parents or support groups.

The author begins this book by describing the days before she knew her very young son "needed to be seen by a specialist" and then brings you through her personal experiences of caring and advocating for her child though out his all too short life. Journey with Jeff is a book that gives the reader an intimate look at the life of a beautiful and challenging person with developmental disabilities. It is very well written and it will move you. It is the perfect book for anyone who is, or expects to be, a parent or a caregiver of people. It is a fascinating look at human nature, as the reader can begin to understand the human experience through the interactions with Jeff by the many different people who touched Jeff's life in so many ways; more often than not positive and a few not so positive. Mostly this book will inspire the reader by witnessing this family's strength, persistence and faith in God, as they helped Jeff make his contributions to this world and live his life. Each chapter will give the reader a new insight into what life was like as Jeff and his family struggled with the many challenges they faced including, living with a serous seizure condition and the many resulting injuries, the efforts to learn the many skills and activities that most of us take for granted, the heart breaking good-byes when Jeff stayed in the hospital or moved to a special school or home to help him grow and, most gratifying, the many feelings of joy and jubilation when Jeff achieved a milestone. As a person who has worked in the human services field for many years (decades), I whole-heartedly recommend that everyone read this book. If you do, I know that you will be a better and more enlightened person for it.

Neil's review said it all, if you are into Apollo and/or the space shuttle, this book is a must read. Some of the most interesting information is contained in the six "intermission(s)" at the end of some of the chapters. "Intermission 4: The three 'ings,'" "Eating," "Sleeping," and "Excreting" is priceless.The last Chapter 9- "Journeys to the stars" is a little far fetched, as using current technology it would take about 80,000 years to get to the nearest star.As I commented on the Pioneer space plaque:Having said that, the speed of the Voyager space probes (not the Pioneer discussed above) is about 35,000 miles per hour, or about 51,000 feet per second. We will use this as an example for the Pioneer probes, see below. About 51,000 feet per second is much, much "faster than a speeding bullet," which can range from about 800 feet per second to about 2,000+ feet per second.The nearest stars to Earth are Alpha Centauri (a binary star) and Proxima Centauri, which are about 4.2 light years away. At the speed of the Voyager space probes it would take about 80,000 years to reach Alpha Centauri (From "The Cambridge Atlas of Astronomy," Third Edition, 1994, page 416-417, chapter called "The extraterrestrial life debate.) (Note: the wikipedia.org entry for Pioneer 10 has different information: "At its current speed, 26,900 m.p.h., it will be more distant than the red dwarf Proxima Centauri in 26,118 years." I can not understand this huge difference in projected times between the "The Cambridge Atlas of Astronomy" page 417and this wikipedia entry.)This gives you some idea how large our Galaxy, the Milky Way is. The Milky Way, contains between 100 to 300 billion stars and is about 100,000 light years across. There are about 100 billion galaxies in our Universe. The point is there are many, many stars and a lot of "space" out there and the distances are "astronomical."For reference, the speed of light is about 186,000 miles per second.

I have read most common (and many uncommon) books on the Apollo program. "Apollo in Perspective" is totally unique among all those books. The book is written with a historical perspective on the Apollo program that not only discusses the technology, missions, and hardware of Apollo, it also discusses the political underpinnings of Apollo as well. That is all relatively common, though; the thing that sets this book apart is that it also covers the physics of rockets, orbital mechanics, and trajectories in a comprehensible manner that most casual readers have not been exposed to. He also gives excellent summaries of the Apollo 1 fire and the Challenger accident, as well as observations on the shuttle, future planetary exploration, and John Glenn's shuttle ride.The book is interesting for both aerospace professionals and newly interested readers as well. In the body of the book, for instance, he discusses the basic math behind Newton's laws and required thrust (which accompanies an especially well written section on staging) without resorting to extravagant mathematical proofs, however for the more avid reader he defines the calculus based proofs in the appendix. This writing technique makes the book an excellent choice for an intelligent non-expert to read as an introduction to the Apollo program.I found this book to be quite accurate, and found his conclusions to be generally very sound. I don't universally agree with every opinion he shares in the concluding part of the book (he essentially contends, for instance, that John Glenn's shuttle flight was apolitical, an opinion I don't share, and in which he is definitely in a tiny minority), but I find his reasoning to be excellent overall. My one critique of the book would be that the last third or so of the book dwells on the shuttle, Mars missions, and other future programs (some of which are very far out.) I am sure that Mr. Allday would say that past is prologue, and that those programs form part of the perspective mentioned in his title. I don't dislike the information; I just found some of it less than germane to the Apollo program.This is an excellent, accurate, and interesting book, which I highly recommend to any space enthusiast.

Wow this was a little different then I was expecting but mostly what I was hoping for. I was expecting a fun 50s bmovie insired romp with experimental art and I got that. I also got some surprisingly touching and chilling storys and while I didn't break into tears or hesitate to turn the page out of horror all of them got me to care about the characters even ones I would just hate and be indifferent to in lesser writing and my eyes did water at times and the art is some of the most breath taking and purposeful i've ever seen.Now this book isn't something i'd put on par with say neil gaimans the sandman and it gets off to a slow start and had a couple clunky moments towards the beginning and it didn't scare me as much as I would usually want a horror comic to(tbh though a lot of stuff people think is great doesn't) but if you're a fan of well realized experimental comics, old bmovies, or pre comics code horror books, or just want a comic to give you some chills, feels, and fun craziness, or just really want something different I think you'll find a lot to love or at least like.Also if you're someone who hestitates on trying new books out of fear they'll have forced politics or social justice stuff in them this book has none.

Probably one of the creepiest comics I've read in a while. Stories are stand alone but with an intertwining thread. I can't wait for Volume 2!!

Fansticly interesting dark story. as soon as I finished I purchased vol 2

Arrived on time and as advertised. The tiniest bit of wear on the spine, hardly noticeable.

This is an anthology series where each issue is a self-contained story with different characters. What pulls them together as a collection is that they all feature the Ice Cream Man. While one of the stories was decidedly horror as a whole I'd rather call them weird tales. The first was the best of the four contained here. After that, they decreased in interest for me and I found the entire gimmick got old fast. I'll say that each story does have a bit of a thrill to make it a decent enough way to spend a quick half hour. The illustration art is unimpressive.

I wanted this book so I could teach my 12 year old grandson how to program. He really likes the book,

Delphi Programming for Dummies is excellent. The book is structured very clearly. The reader is introduced to Delphi very carefully and smoothly. When no technical words are necessary, none are used. The language used is very natural and sometimes even funny. This makes this book actually pleasant to read. The great thing is that this book (as promised by the title) does explain a lot about the programming part of Delphi, and not just about the components (which are also described). A great way to start working with Delphi.

Initially apprehensive to read a "relationships" book, I decided to go ahead and read it due to a recently ended relationship and the assurance that this book is deeply rooted in science. And I am so glad that I read this book, principally for the succinct summary of hundreds of academic studies on psychology, relationships, divorce, attachment theory, and happiness.Seeing that each conclusion the author posits is based not just one or two, but many repeatable academic studies is very reassuring. I felt like I was able to much better understand myself as a human being, particularly the biology of attraction and the fundamental changes in relationships over the last 200 years due to increased life expectancy and societal shifts.There are parts of the book where I felt like the author was coaching me on how to make better dating decisions, which is fine, but felt a bit odd as much of the focus on the book was presenting science rather than relationship coaching. I think Dr. Tashiro probably just couldn't help himself, and I don't fault him for doing it. When I obliged to do the tests presented in the book, I went to the noted website to complete them and found the website to be incomplete and not have the test results represented in the book.At times the conclusions were a bit muddled; I thought the discussion on attachment theory was interesting but lacking in finality. After spending a couple hours researching attachment theory online, it makes sense now that the conclusions were weak because there don't seem to be strong correlations between long-term relationship success and attachment type among adults."The Science of Happily Ever After" has many virtues and the survey of such a massive amount of research is really worth reading, and it is made better by the weave of interesting personal stories that illustrate the science in action. In the end, I give the book 5/5 stars despite its few shortcomings. I highly recommend this book.

This is the book you've been looking for if you've been looking for an enduring love relationship and failing to find it. In this very entertainingly written book, TyTashiro comes up with plenty of evidence to show that it's the criteria we use for choosing our partners that lead us astray into passing over people who might be ideal for us or into relationships that fail sooner rather than later.The incredibly high divorce rate is ample proof that most of us are doing something wrong when choosing our partners and the book kicks off with a reasoned explanation of why the criteria we use are not relevant to the levels of relationship satisfaction we experience and how long those relationships last.The book rang plenty of bells for me but the loudest was that many of us are also using too many criteria when choosing our partners which can often cut down the pool of possibles to a very few or even none. Ty reckons you've pretty well only got three wishes before you've cut down the number of possibles to the extent that you'll have to be very lucky indeed to stumble across one of them.With the thought that you've only got three wishes, it makes perfect sense not to waste any of them on irrelevancies and Ty suggests traits that you should really be looking for in your partner (Hint: they don't include looks or money). A very important one is your prospective partner's attachment style. Put very simply, an attachment style is how that person will react when things go a bit pear-shaped in your world and you go to them seeking comfort and reassurance. People normally echo the attachment style shown to them by their primary caregivers in childhood and Ty reveals how to determine if your prospective partner's attachment style makes them a good long-term prospect or not.Finding a person with the traits Ty suggests is very much easier than, for example, finding someone who looks like Cameron Diaz and whose father owns a brewery. Happiness and love are the ultimate goals of most of us and the framework provided by Ty seems to me to be a very good start in thinking about and planning how to achieve that state.

But if you are then there’s no silver lining for you. You are screwed. This doesn’t mean the book is bad, just a little bit of an unsettling truth.I deduct 1 star because it was never explained which one of the “big five” corresponds to “novelty seeking”.

I am a psychologist and I am suggesting this book to everyone considering getting into a relationship. I have written six books myself and tried to write one about this topic, but just couldn't find the research in the 1990s when I was interested in this topic.. It is a well written book that I have now bought more copies of to give to single family members. Thank you, Dr. Tashiro!On a side note, I am married and reading this did remind me that I did get my three wishes!
