More Servlets and JavaServer Pages, by Marty Hall

Amazon.com Review

Ideal for any programmer working with server-side Java, Marty Hall's More Servlets and JavaServer Pages provides an up-to-the-minute guide to the latest in essential APIs for creating state-of-the-art Web applications. This smart, patient, and thorough tutorial gives you exactly what you need to use Java effectively in the field. While many books on Java try to cover just about everything, this title's focus on what's hot in server-side Java makes it a standout. The book begins with a very solid tutorial to servlets and JSPs, including important HTTP fundamentals (like request headers and processing forms). The author does a good job at summarizing APIs and common options, which helps make this book useful as a working reference, too. The level of discussion here is suited to those with a little Java experience, but even beginners could do a lot worse than this title as an introduction to Web programming. A great feature of this text is that the author walks you through the actual details of deploying your Web applications (notoriously tricky, even for experts). Screenshots on installing and using tools (like the free Apache and Tomcat software packages), plus detailed advice on deployment, will make sure your code actually runs. (A standout here is the summary of all configuration options available in today's containers.) If you are coming to servlets and JSPs from an earlier version, you'll find this text excels at covering the latest in custom and standard tag libraries. Besides explaining new JSP 1.2 tag conventions, later sections also look at an important new development in Sun's evolution of the Java platform, the JSP Standard Tag Library (JSTL). Coverage of tag programming (including several sections on looping) closes out the book. There's also material on important new advances in servlets, like filters (which allow you to log or change requests) and servlet events (which afford a greater measure of control for your Web applications). Whether you are a JSP beginner or expert, More Servlets and JavaServer Pages gives you an excellent mix of topics in server-side Java in a well-presented programming tutorial. It's sure to be a worthwhile addition to any working Java Web developer's bookshelf. --Richard Dragan Topics covered: Introduction to JavaServer Pages (JSPs) and servlets, software installation for Java server developers (JDK, Tomcat, Apache, JRun, and other Web containers), summary of Web application deployment directories, advantages of servlets, the servlet lifecycle, processing HTTP form data (including request headers and CGI variables), cookies and sessions, advantages of JSPs, basic JSP scripting tutorial (including expressions and scriptlets), using JavaBeans with JSPs (tags and properties), custom tag libraries, introduction to the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture, registering and deploying Web applications (.WAR files and data sharing), in-depth guide to Web application configuration (comprehensive guide to web.xml settings), configuring servlets (including filters and error pages, timeouts and installing tag libraries), case study for an online boat shop, declarative security tutorial (including SSL and form-based authentication), programmatic security (including using certificates and SSL), guide to servlet filters (including logging, replacement, and compression examples), processing servlet events, JSP 1.2 tag library improvements (including XML and SAX 2.0 tag validation), and the JSP Standard Tag Library (JSTL) (including basic statements and looping).

Companion to the worldwide bestseller Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages Practical guide to the use of the Java Platform for Web-enabled applications and dynamic Web sites Focus on new capabilities: the servlet 2.3 and JSP 1.2 specifications, the standard JSP tag library (JSPTL), filters, life-cycle event listeners, security, Web applications, and much more Configuration and usage details for Apache Tomcat, Macromedia JRun, and New Atlanta ServletExecThe Java 2 Platform has become the technology of choice for developing professional e-commerce applications, dynamic Web pages, and Web-enabled applications and services. Servlet and JSP technology is the foundation of this platform: it provides the link between Web clients and server-side applications. But, the field has been evolving rapidly, and few developers have been able to keep up. In this companion to Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages, Marty Hall shows you how to apply recent advances in servlet and JSP technology. The book provides everything you need to know to leverage the latest servlet 2.3 and JSP 1.2 standards: real-world insight, advanced techniques, industrial-strength code, and hands on coverage of three top servers: Apache Tomcat, Macromedia JRun, and New Atlanta ServletExec. Part I gives a thorough introduction to programming with servlet and JSP technology. It shows you how to configure your server, read form data and HTTP headers, handle cookies, track sessions, apply JSP scripting elements, use JavaBeans components, develop JSP tag libraries, and apply the MVC architecture. Part II provides exhaustive details on Web application development and deployment. It explains how to register Web applications, how to organize them, how to deploy them in WAR files, how to deal with relative URLs, and how to share data among Web applications. It also gives details on every element in version 2.3 of the deployment descriptor (web.xml). Part III describes Web application security in detail. It explains two general strategies for securing your applications: declarative security and programmatic security. Within each of these strategies, it shows you how to use form-based or BASIC authentication and how to protect your network traffic with SSL. Part IV covers two features introduced with servlets 2.3: filters and life-cycle events. It explains how to use filters to debug, modify, and optimize the output of previously existing servlets and JSP pages. It also shows you how to use event listeners to respond to major events in the server life cycle. Part V looks at new tag library developments. It shows you how to improve your own tag libraries by making use of new capabilities of the JSP 1.2 specification and explains how to streamline your code by using the new standard JSP tag library (JSPTL).More Servlets and JavaServer Pages delivers: The same clear, step-by-step explanations that make Marty's books so popular In-depth, hands-on coverage of the latest standards: servlets 2.3 and JSP 1.2 Hundreds of completely portable, fully documented, industrial-strength examples On-line access to all source code, available free for unrestricted use

I am an intermediate-level Java developer. I find this book great for me.Several months ago I tried to find a "tutorial book" for jsp/servlet. I chose "More Servlets and JavaServer Pages" after extensive research on amazon before buying. I like the author's style in explaining concepts, which is easy to follow. However, this book is not an introductory/grammar book by any means. The author keeps very good balance between efforts of reading and depth in technical details. This book helps me a lot in my projects. What's more, the author is responsive. He answers questions promptly and his knowledgeable answers really save me lots of time in my projects. (I don't think it is fair for the author to answer my project questions. I always ask the questions in the way that it is related to a particular part in the book.)Just a little more than a month ago, I came up to the idea to take certification test of Sun Certified Web Component Developer for J2EE. Initially I wanted to buy another book, "professional jsp", as a backup in case more details are needed occasionally. It came out to my surprise that, this book covers 90% contents for the test. Alternatively, I got the free copies of jsp/servlet specifications as the backup reference. Finally I got a score of 88% in the test after reading the book only two times within very short time, one in details, another just in brief. (I read the author's previous book "Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages" once in detail before.)I don't want to mislead people who only need a test-cram book for the test. This book is for jsp/servlet design, not specifically for test. Around 25% contents of this book have nothing to do with the test. Here I list the missing parts in the sequence of importance for those who want to use this book to take the test:1. Design patterns is missing2. log() methods are not discussed for exception/error handling3. distributable web application is over-simplifiedTo be fair, I need to mention the part I don't like about this book, if there is any. Generally authors try to conform to new specifications throughout their books, and only mentioned compatible problems to old specifications with "Warnings" scattered around. However, the author does just the opposite. I REALLY don't like this approach. In a word, this book is great for readers with java background to develop jsp/servlet projects. It is sufficient for SCWCD certification according to my experience.

What makes this book way superior to other texts aboutjava web development is nor the broad range of topics treated,or the cleverness of the author, or his good preparation in the subject, or his coding abilities. You might find all or a few of these in the zillions of servlet/jsp books around.. but you won't find a great teacher like Marty so easily. That si probably due to the fact that this guy is not a codemunching corporate programmer but comes from an academic background. He teaches for a living, and it shows...Finally someone who knows how to explain without boring you to death,or annoying you pretending to be a comedian in the IDGish style that' become so common among book writing nerds with a hopeless sense of humour. Marty gives you the full story but makes it really simple, because, let's face it.. web developement IS SIMPLE even for the average programmer.. unless someone throws you a fuss of code snippets and incoherent or incomplete explanations. Marty will clearly explain a concept, relate it with the rest of the picture and give you at least one working example you can try out. This is how a technical writer shouldbe like.

This book was a big help for me in passing IBM's exams that deal with the J2EE. Good breadth and depth in many of the categories on the exam and Marty puts things in a clear manner so you pick up the concepts quickly. Very well laid out.I'd also mention this book is way more than just servlets/jsp's, it also has a ton of stuff on really understanding the deployment of J2EE webapps and how to really get the most out of your web.xml. It also has good coverage of j2ee security and JSTL. Hope this helps others decide.

I found this book very useful and up to date. It was an easy read and the examples worked. The book gave you enough detail, but not too much. Marty Hall is a very good author and knows how to convey complicated material into an easy to understand format.

I've read about a dozen servlet & JSP books, and I think this is the best one for readers with some prior experience in servlets & JSP. It is also an excellent book for people who are new to servlets & JSP, but I'll clarify that at the end of my review. The book is definitely worth 5 starts. The first star is for Marty Hall's clear and direct writing style. The second star is for being one of the few books that is currently up to date with the newest servlet & JSP specifications. The third star is for having very practical and useful content such as solid coverage of web application deployment. The fourth star is for being the first book that I've read that has detailed coverage of how to use SSL with servlets. The fifth star is for having source code, sample chapters, and a slew of prequel chapters freely available online. If you read and enjoyed Mr. Hall's "Core Servlets & JSP", this book is well worth buying also. Be aware, the first 240 pages is an introduction which is essentially a reduced and updated form of the "Core" book. But the other 450 pages is all new and extremely good content. Even without the first 240 pages, the other 450 pages is worth the purchase price alone. If you are brand new to Servlet & JSPs you may want to first buy "Core Servlets & JSPs" for a slower introduction to these topics. But, make sure you come back and buy this book because you will definitely want some of the updated and advanced topics such as "web applications." Alternatively, you can go ahead and buy this book and read some of the prequel chapters that Mr. Hall has online. I haven't been fortunate enough to attend one myself, but I've also heard wonderful things about the onsite and public training servlet & JSP training classes that Mr. Hall offers. In short, it's a great book. Enjoy!

Both author and illustrator must be two caring people. This book sweetly and gently bring a place of comfort to the mind, when something is no longer present. The little hippo gets sad . But the author and illustrator express the sadness with the little hippo tugging a heavy block, everywhere she goes, everyday. Along comes a very happy cute alligator, who doesn't pass her by, but spends a little time with her. Helping her in her time of need. This book gently shows the hippo being able to talk about why she is sad. The alligator knew from the beginning all she needed was a little help.

Most people who have read this series, at the very least, like portions of it.They like the first 3 or 4 installments, but then they get bored, or after the 3rd or 4th book, the series really started picking up for them.I’m weird, I guess. I pretty much liked the entire series right up until the end. Sure, how much I liked each book varied—for example, except for the last book, this one is my LEAST favorite, but that’s not uncommon, what with this being book 2 and all. It definitely has its good moments (like when Eric gets shot and that thing happens that is hilarious and awesome), but overall . . . MEH.Living Dead in Dallas begins with Sookie finding a dead Lafayette in Andy Bellefleur’s car in the parking lot of Merlotte’s one morning. What do you mean, “a dead Lafayette?!” you ask. “Lafayette can’t be DEAD, he’s still going strong in season 6 of True Blood!”Let me introduce you to a little game I like to play called “Same and NOT the Same.”SO. Andy’s been drinking, ’cause you know, being a cop is hard, and Sookie has to call Portia (his sister) to come and pick him up.Leaving his car at the bar.For persons unknown to leave a dead body in.But why would someone want to kill Lafayette? He’s so much fun!Yeah, well, he’s also got a BIG mouth. A BIG mouth that he’s apparently been running about a house he’d been going to, “where there were all kinds of sex hi-jinks going on,” and someone didn’t like that. Someone didn’t like that a lot.So poor Sook’s stressed out about that. Then when she gets home from work that night, Bill tells her that she’s been “summoned” by Eric.Better and better. The next evening they drive to Shreveport, where Eric informs her that she’s been LOANED out to vampires in Dallas who could use some assistance of the telepathic variety. AND while Sookie’s understandably upset about Eric’s high-handedness, there’s really not much she can do about it—she did, after all, agree to help him any time he wanted, in exchange for turning over human culprits to human authorities, rather than taking matters into their vampire hands. I suppose it’s her own fault for not specifying she wouldn’t stand for being loaned out. You live and you learn, I guess.Freakin’ vampires. And that is how Bill and Sookie wind up on an airplane bound for Dallas.I’ve already said that this is probably my least favorite book in the series until you get to end, and that is b/c . . . while I don’t have a problem with kink, I do have a problem with gross, middle-aged, pervy kink. And this group is just . . . blech.I also have a problem with centuries-old, pedophile vampires. Actually, I have a problem with ALL types of pedophiles, so even contemplating one that has been doing what they do FOR SO FREAKING LONG<——well, clearly, it’s upsetting.AND all of the Bill and Sookie relationship angst from book 1 grows and flourishes in book 2 (and relationship angst is not something you want growing and flourishing). This is also the book where you get your first glimpse of how self-absorbed Bill can be.This book is also where you get your first glimpse of how attentive someone-not-Bill can be.*winks*And that’s really the only sell point for this installment. Well, that, and it’s necessary to read this one to get to the good ones. BOTTOMLINE—too much perv for one book. Read it b/c you can’t move forward without it, but go into it knowing that there is some seriously disturbing stuff going on. That is all.

Book two of the The True Blood novels by Charlaine Harris is just as good as the first book! I was having a tough time putting it down. Now that Eric the head vampire of Area 5 knows of Sookies disabilities, he plans to put them to good use, for himself of course. After a shocking incident involving the unusually drunk Officer Andy Bellefleur and the flashy Lafayette, I wont' give any spoilers here folks so that's all I can say on that matter, Sookie is whisked away to tend to vamp matters, in Texas!Of course our southern belle Sookie cannot take a step these days without finding herself in mortal peril. Before she even leaves Bon Temps a Maenad finds Sookie and leaves a not so friendly message for her to relay to Eric. She wants tribute, but it isn't always that simple now is it folks? The matters in Texas however becomes more and more problematic for our gal. A vampire has been taken from his nest, and his family wants answers, and their deaths. She has to infiltrate a fanatic religious group of sun worshipers who may or may not have kidnapped their vampire. All Sookie wants to do is go to work, she can't stop thinking about her drive way and how it needs to be re graveled and how she is going to afford it having to take so many days off from work. Damn Bill, he wants to treat Sookie as a kept woman but he isn't doing such a good job where she really needs it. I am so Eric's corner, his sweetly seductive bad boy self, and his brief moments with Sookie, I'm rooting for him.[...]

The best part of this book is more Eric! Although I like this book and this series in general, I felt this book had a lot more issues than the first. There are inconsistencies right off the bat. For example, Charlsie's husband was named Ralph in the first book, then changed to Micah in the second. The type of things you notice if you read them in succession I guess. The maenad in this book was just kind of weird and stupid. I think the show made a better plot of it to be honest. The events in the beginning of the book are almost forgotten because of all the craziness that goes on in the middle. The Sookie Stackhouse novels are almost like two books in one. There is always the same formula: Situation A. Situation B. Situation B resolved. Oh yeah, back to Situation A. In this book, Sookie finally realizes that she is way in over her head with the vampires. She is now under their control all the time, and their problems frequently disrupt her life. The background characters in this book finally come to the foreground. It accentuates how different they are on the show. Tara is very weak emotionally, but strong financially and very pretty in the book. She's an absolute train wreck on the show, but at least her personality is strong. Sam is very nice in the book and practically worships Sookie, but on the show he isn't as nice and has raging jealousy issues. I don't like Bill at all and I think he's a user, but Sookie can't see it yet, regardless of the medium. This book is good, although it is a bit scattered. Definitely worth the read.

This set includes the following Baby Loves books:-Gravity-Coding-Thermodynamics-Aerospace EngineeringI won't review each one separately because there are already a lot of reviews on these individual books' listings. We bought this set for our 9 month old after we fell in love with Baby Loves Quantum Physics (not included in this set). Even though it's early for baby to understand these concepts, the author does a great job of making them approachable for young children, and the illustrator does a wonderful job of making the books colorful and entertaining. I love that each book has babies in it - not enough children's books do. My little guy loves looking at the babies and pointing to them. His favorite in this set is Gravity. His least favorite (at least at this age!) is Coding. I was a little disappointed because I work in IT :), but it's more because it's got a little harder words and concepts to break down than the other topics. The great news is that these books can be read for a few years. I love that these provide a foundation for STEM lifelong learning. This set also includes a paper ABC poster. Most of the words are used in the books in some way so your little one will find them familiar. It's maybe 12x12 so it's not huge, but you could laminate it and/or throw it on the wall.My husband has a Physics Ed degree and is a high school science teacher, and he absolutely loves these books too. He wants to take the Thermodynamics one into his class to show his students that are struggling!Overall we love these books and this is a great set to help your baby start learning some complex concepts.

This sounds like a grand idea, but fails completely. It is too abstract to be developmentally sound, and if a child could gain anything from it, he would be old enough to resent being called a baby, which would undo the good. Heed Kirkus Reviews and Leave on the shelf. My set is doing a rapid return to Amazon.

These books are well written and, though some other reviewers have noted that some of the material may be over young heads, I think they do a great job with the artwork and leveled language. If you are like me and want to give gender-neutral baby gifts, this is your go-to set.

My 17 month old baby is obsessed with this books. Gravity is her favorite. Illustrations are great for her age and she already grasped most of the concepts. She says: Gravity! while sliding down at the park! Definitely will buy the rest of the series.

My BF and I bought this for ome of his family member's baby. She loved it and sat on her parents lap having them read to her. Well written for babies with art work that explains the basics well. Very cute!

These are very good at basic concepts. I actually learned a little something myself!

So cute!! I love these books!

Bought this book set for the child of a friend who is a scientist. The books are durable for a toddler and a fun read for the parents to share their love of science with their son.

Excellent

Excellent set of 'recipes' for Ruby! Covers Ruby 2.1 which is great.

As an ad hoc programmer as part of my test design role, this book has proven invaluable in coming up with the exact right paradigm for writing a function, lamba, or just stealing vast swaths of code in toto.

From the Back Cover

The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a Ping-Pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.Fortunately, there is an alternative to self-esteem that many experts believe is a better and more effective path to happiness: self-compassion. The research of Dr. Kristin Neff and other leading psychologists indicates that people who are compassionate toward their failings and imperfections experience greater well-being than those who repeatedly judge themselves. This book powerfully demonstrates why it's so important to be self-compassionate and give yourself the same caring support you'd give to a good friend.Using solid empirical research, personal stories, practical exercises, and humor, Dr. Neff—the world's foremost expert on self-compassion—explains how to heal destructive emotional patterns so that you can be healthier, happier, and more effective.

#1,430 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I began reading Self-Compassion two days ago and I am astonished. Astounded. I cannot believe that in all my years of extensive, detailed therapy not one of my excellent therapists ever recommended these exercises.I am Bipolar with Histrionic tendencies and have struggled all my life with my self-image and an eating disorder. Guilt has always been my default emotion. Shame. All the things that one stuffs down with food. Or alcohol. Or shopping. Or any reckless, impulsive behavior meant to stuff feelings down so we DON'T FEEL them. And when I don't feel my feelings, I PUNISH myself. This has been going on all my life. This book is changing my entire outlook, without confusing me or SCARING me to death. This is because it is so straightforward and common sense. I feel Empowered. And almost Brave. This does not read as a medical/scientific text and I tend to be highly skeptical about these sorts of books. However, with this book I find few, if any, intellectual objections to the manner in which it is written or in how the studies and source material are not cited until the "notes" at the end. (This seems to be increasingly common and I often find it hard to stick with a book when the author is not forthcoming with sources within the text itself.)But in this case, I am not bothered the lack of in-text acknowledgement of source material because there's really not anything to OBJECT TO or call into question within the text. All of the advice is sound. I've not read anything (so far) that is harmful or suspect. The exercises are so simple and the advice will set your brain to sparking, esp. if you have a spiritual bent as do I.I am eager to work my way through the rest of the book and am pacing myself so that I don't do too much at once. I will check back in when I am finished.Buy this book and see if it helps you as much as it is helping me.

At age 66 and just retired, I was not sure I could learn much from a book that would truly impact my life. Happily, I was wrong. Kristen Neff has presented a clear and compelling description of self-compassion. It affirms much of my life experience up to now. From her book, I have learned new ways of thinking and being. I am hereby resetting my sails and, with renewed enthusiasm, setting off into the future, and the final chapters in my life. I am more open to what is, grateful for my strengths, able to savor life's pleasures a little more. I see myself connected with all other humans facing challenges that inevitably come along the way. I imagine I will return to this book many times to tap back into Neff's simple, fundamentally compassionate and encouraging words.

This book had a very transformative effect on my life. Although I had trouble with my anxiety, as an analytical overthinking kind of person, I needed a very valid reason to convince myself out of my suffering and anxiety. This book along with a therapist has replaced so much of my suffering with both Joy and compassion. It made such a difference on me that I gave a talk to 85 young adults on the subject to help them see what I saw from this book. Thanks Kristen.Hook em! (UT 07)

I am an avid reader of self-help and spiritual books. I have read nearly all of the popular and best-sellers. Authors include: John Bradshaw, Scot Peck, Marianne Williamson, Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Tony Robbins--- to name a few. I am definitely one who is searching and of ALL the hundreds of books I have read, lectures and sermons I have taken in, NONE have touched on the subject of self compassion the way Neff did. What stuck me the most was how she boldly illustrates how the self-esteem movement has failed and why. I think that many of the other authors and gurus still use the language of self esteem and thus their messages of compassion was shrouded, which is why I believe that this book is a MUST READ for anyone who is trapped in the vicious cycle of self-hatred, self-loathing, self-criticism and anything else that we do to ourselves that is less than kind. I am actually taking the time to do the exercises in the book with a journal and my life has CHANGED. This book produced results!!! I am not one to write a review unless it is something like really amazing, and I hope for the day when I can meet Neff in person and honor her for her contribution to my spiritual healing and journey. You will not be disappointed.

This book has helped me so much! The author gives jaw dropping honest examples that any one else would have sugar coated. I could relate to her on sooooo many levels it was crazy. As a perfectionist and extreme self criticizer this book opened my eyes to the benefits of being kind to myself. What I love most about this book is that it did not feel like a "self-help" book but it definitely has helped me tremendously. I found myself easily practicing some of the aspects of this book and it genuinely helping me. One of the best reads of the year for me!
