Review

“One More Year is an astoundingly well-crafted and punishingly heartfelt depiction of mental illness and codependence, one that also manages to make you laugh uncomfortably at the horrible decisions made by the characters you’re watching.” - Vulture“One More Year is mean-spirited, cynical, bitterly depressing, and vulgar in the extreme. But it’s in that junkyard of a world that Hanselmann manages to coax up a truly compelling and flawed transfeminine character.” - Medium“Readers struggling with their own demons will find this anthology chillingly real.” - Publishers Weekly“Hanselmann succeeds not only in pursuing cringe humor to its darkest corner but also in his depiction of hallucinatory states―expect plenty of dripping appendages and faces, along with wild and wide-ranging color schemes.” - Omnivoracious“In this latest edition we certainly get more of what drew us to Hanselmann's stories in the first place: the exquisite, teeth-clenching art; the barrage of gross-out humor with scattered moments of poignancy and beauty; an oppressive backdrop that captures the soul-crushing pressure of just being alive. But we also get something new.” - Under the Radar“It’s signature Hanselmann: a tale of friends and their endlessly f―ed up antics.” - The Fader“These are simultaneously some of the meanest and most tender comics you will ever read.” - Seattle Weekly

On the cover, a review by the A.V. club states that this is "Strange, hilarious and occasionally disturbing." I would say that it is "strange, disturbing and occasionally hilarious."While this volume isn't as funny as "Amsterdam," fans of the other Meg and Mogg books will certainly enjoy this. As in previous volumes, there are numerous one and two page stories. The strength of this book is the three long stories: "Jobs," "Heat Wave," and "Worst Behavior." Meg and Mogg's drug problems, apathy, laziness and depression/anxiety are as bad as ever, and the latter is addressed even more than before. The title of this volume is taken from Meg's statement to spend "one more year" in "drug world" (it would be an amazing turn by Simon Hanselmann to address Meg's attempt to get clean in a future volume).Another long story in the book is called "High School," and it really serves as the group's origin story. All the major characters are present.WW Jones is as insane and inappropriate as ever. The funniest moments in the book involve him, including a ludicrous panel on page 17.

Maaaannnnnnn. I'm really upset that Amazon isn't clear that a ton of the content in this book has already been published. I counted and I've already read 18 of the 27 comics. I'm so broke and I can't afford to trifle with best-of compilations that I already own 2/3's of. Maybe it was more clear on the Fantagraphics website. If you're just getting into Simon Hanselmann's work this is still very tight. Heatwave was dope and I didn't get a chance to buy the Drone zine so I'm glad I got a chance to read it. Overall I was really thirsty for new comics and this book let me down.

I stumbled upon this book at my local library. I got it because I enjoyed the art. I had no idea what to expect and was totally caught off guard at how incredibly hilarious this series is. It is like a version of workaholics in that it is about three losers that live together, but the characters have far more depth to them. They are terrible people, but they aren't as irritating as the workaholic jamokes are. After reading this book from the library, I went and just bought all three volumes that I could find on amazon. They are all amazing and worth reading if you enjoy crass humor, that has humanity mixed in.

Vol 2 continues the graphic, gross, laugh out loud and cry softly brilliance of this comic. Get it now?

Best modern comic writer/illustrator ever. Seriously, if your weird, depressed, like getting messed up. THIS is it folks.I love ALL his work, buy it all. simon, your great. truly.

there aren't that many new comics in this book, but it's pretty good beyond that.

Simon Hanselmann is absolutely brilliant! This book really dives into the backstory and complex relationships with the characters. I LOVE the Megg and Mogg series, it's by far my favorite comic ever.

Lots of crude penis jokes and overal immaturity. Perfection!

If you’ve read any of the books by writer and editor Ed Cyzewski, you know that (1) he has often wrestled with his faith; (2) over a period of some years, he moved from a Catholic faith to an evangelical one, including a seminary degree; (3) he found his evangelical faith and church to be legalistic and as much focused on “doing” as the Catholic church had emphasized works; and (4) he has wrestled, and continues to wrestle, with his faith through writing and through prayer. But the prayer he uses isn’t what many evangelicals (or Catholics, for that matter) are familiar with. It’s the contemplative prayer of the church fathers and the desert fathers. This is prayer that is a spiritual exercise and engagement. It is prayer that is part of a process that’s been used by Christians for more than 15 centuries.Something old is new again.“Flee, Be Silent, Pray: An Anxious Evangelical Finds Peace with God through Contemplative Prayer” is Cyzewski’s description and explanation of how he is deepening his faith. The title is taken from a saying by Abba Arsenius (350-445 A.D.), also known as Arsenius the Great. He was a tutor for the Roman imperial family until he became an anchorite in the Egyptian desert, and he is particularly known for his writing on contemplative prayer. What Abba Arsenius said was this: “Flee, be silent, pray always, for these are the sources of sinlessness.”Cyzewski walks through each of those steps, telling his own story of how he discovered and utilized contemplative prayer. One particular tool he found useful is what is called the “examen,” a process developed by St. Ignatius for prayer that both focuses and deepens.Contemplative prayer is something that all Christians, regardless of denomination, should understand and consider.Cyzewski struggles with his evangelical experience. His experience as an evangelical has not been my own experience; perhaps it’s because I haven’t had any experience with legalistic churches. It’s this experience that has contributed to the “anxious” part of the book’s title. But the differences in evangelical experiences doesn’t detract from the central message that contemplative prayer can be a good spiritual practice.Cyzewski is a writer, blogger, freelancer, and book editor. He is also the author of numerous books on faith, writing, and related topics, including “Creating Space: The Case for Everyday Creativity” (2012); “Pray, Write, Grow” (2015);” The Contemplative Writer” (2016); and “Coffeehouse Theology: Reflecting on God in Everyday Life” (2016).“Flee, Be Silent, Pray” provides a solid overview to an ancient Christian practice that is being rediscovered. And it tells a very personal story at the same time.

I was excited to receive a copy of this book and couldn't wait to read it and share it with others. But presently, my life is very “full” ( whose isn’t!?) with a toddler and a baby at home and all of the other fun plates to juggle. And I'm lucky if I have a chance to read a few pages a day. Thankfully, this is the kind of book that one can read a few pages at a time and they will definitely walk away with much to think about. I am thankful to have this book as my spiritual guide for the summer. And it’s a treasure I’ll return to for years to come. When I received “Flee, Be Silent, Pray”, I found myself stressing to read it in its entirety as soon as possible, so I could write a comprehensive review right away. One page in, I realized that is exactly *not* what Ed would have me do. That is the kind of humble person he is. That is how you know he stands by what he sharing in this book. The entire premise is we have an invitation to experience God in a whole new way. (“New” actually meaning… drawing from the richness and depth of spiritual practices that have been practiced for many years but have recently been drowned out or forgotten by modern day Christianity). And yet Ed is gracious in all of this. Celebrating the gifts he has received from all seasons of his spiritual life. Offering to us his own life story and practices that have helped heal and shape him. There is a beautiful, life giving invitation to commune with God and one need not run themselves into the ground in anxious pursuit of that. Ed shares “we need more than commands, teachings, and obligations to life fruitfully as Spirit-filled followers of Jesus. We need God’s transforming love…transformation and holiness proceed out of the peace and security of that love.”At first glance, one might think this could become license to just “sit on our laurels” or not sacrifice with spiritual disciplines or service for God. But this book invites us to understand that when we are transformed by God’s love, those very fruits WILL flow from our lives. And it will happen naturally and healthfully. As a friend of the Cyzewski family, I can personally attest to this. For three years my family had the gift of being in a spiritual community with their family. We watched firsthand how they embodied love and health in their faith, marriage, parenting, and friendships. They were some of the first people to invite my husband and I into this new way of experiencing God and we are so thankful for that short but formative time. My family has since moved to a small rural community. One where the unofficial slogan at our local church is “Work Hard, Play Hard, Study Hard.” You can imagine what a gift (life line!) this book is to remind me that there is a beautiful and sacred way to experience God and it doesn’t need to entail totally burning myself out, or sacrificing the health of my family in that process. As a Christian counselor, I see the effects of burnout-whether spiritual or vocational all the time. I am so thankful for this resource to share with my clients. Already I can see the palpable sense of relief when I share with them that another way is possible. My small town (and this country for that matter) is so hungry for authentic ways to encounter God’s rest, love and transformation. I can’t help but think there is there is an exciting spiritual revolution happening, with books such as “Flee, Be Silent, Pray” at the forefront. Thank you, Ed, for sharing your stories and practices with us.

As a Southern Baptist I found his journey from evangelicalism to a contemplative Christ-follower very well articulated. I have not been called to leave my tribe---yet. But in spirit and truth I am a kindred soul to the author. Also, his articulation of the contemplative path was very practical and helpful.I should think that this might ought to be required reading for many who are leaving the "evangelical" faith in the droves during these days. This book will be a helpful transition and guide to a better way to live the with-God life. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I reserve those for C.S. Lewis, Dallas Willard, Eugene Peterson, and Henri Nouwen.I highly recommend this book.

This is a helpful, readable guide to contemplative prayer specifically for those in the evangelical church tradition. Cyzewski goes out of his way to assure Bible protestants that he is "one of us" so that we will trust him when he recommends contemplative prayer in the Catholic tradition. I found his personal narrative persuasive and helpful. He integrates it into his explanation of prayer urging us to move from despair or "asking for things" to relationship. Can we sit in God's presence and allow him to be God? Can we be with God just because he loves us and with no other agenda? This book is simple. It is not overly mystical and does not over promise. But it does encourage me to seek God simply for himself and in response to his love.

This is a biblical counseling booklet on suicide that is a part of a series called “Resources for Changing Lives” printed by Presbyterian and Reformed Publishing. I highly recommend this series of booklets and I have found them very beneficial for my own personal spiritual growth and also as a resource in pastoral ministry. The specific topic for this booklet is on suicide. The booklet addresses those intervening and counseling someone who is struggling with wanting to commit suicide rather than addressing directly the person who desire to end his or her own life. I made the mistake of not reading the subtitle of this work carefully and gave this to someone I was counseling that was feeling suicidal. Nevertheless when I read this booklet I felt it was a treasure trove of help for the counselor and is jam packed with many insights despite its tiny size.In the first three pages of introduction the author Jeffrey Black describes the tragedy of suicide and how it is difficult for him as a pastor to minister to those who survived a loved one who ended his or her own life. The book then looks at the inner world of the suicidal person. I thought the author did a good job arguing of how suicide is sinful by looking at the various heart issues that motivate and drive one to the brink of suicide. The next section is titled “Common Features in Suicidal Thinking.” Here it is very insightful concerning the mind-set of one who is suicidal and those who have been at risk with suicide or have been at risk before will affirm the insights of what the author tells us. This is followed by a section on “How Can You Help?” that provides five helpful principles to help those one is counseling. The final section is on how to assess the risk of suicide which also is very helpful. As a constructive criticism the author could have defined “felt need” as some Christians would not understand what that term means as opposed to actual need and even the circumstance. I also thought it might be better to have the section on how to assess the risk of suicide be moved to the beginning of the book rather than the end. Putting it in the beginning might make readers how important the rest of the content of the book is given the level of danger one counselee faces. Plus it presents the materials in a “problem” then “solution” linear direction which helps readers track along better.Overall very helpful. Again it amazes me how much helpful materials is presented in such a short booklet; my copy has a lot of highlights and for good reasons! I recommend this for pastors, biblical counselors and regular church members too since we will also be ministering to God’s people in the church and outside our church sometime in our Christian life. Be equipped and be prepared, consider reading this booklet today!

Brilliant author, brilliant booklet! An excellent, easy to read summarization of understanding suicide. I am a student of Dr. Black and have my MS in Counseling Psychology. I'm impressed how he consolidated his extensive wisdom of this powerful subject matter into a short booklet. I highly recommend it if anyone you know is struggling with deep depression and/or suicidal ideation; friends, family members, or yourself. This booklet is an excellent way to begin understanding such a complicated and serious topic. I hope he writes more books, for his knowledge of psychology seems to be endless...

My question was: how do you counsel a person who can biblically and rationally say that suicide is a sin, and ought not to be committed, yet at times becomes so emotionally despondent that he considers it an option? One resource that was recommended to me was Suicide: Understanding and Intervening by Jeffrey S. Black. The author begins by explaining how difficult it is to understand the suicide of a Christian: how can the Christian commits suicide when a Christian has the hope of the Gospel? His answer is that for a Christian to commit suicide, he or she must take his or her eyes off the light and truth of the Gospel (2).He explains that the reasons a person commits suicide are legion, but the descriptions are largely the same: "psychological pain, interpersonal alienation, and hopelessness" (3). Ultimately, he says that suicide is the choice to sin. If we are focused on Jesus, suicide is not possible, he argues (3-4).He looks at Paul is an example of someone who endured great suffering and yet did not commit suicide. He says Paul did not commit suicide because (1) he saw purpose in his suffering, (2) he was future oriented, and (3) his life was daily renewed by the Holy Spirit (6).He argues that telling someone who is suicidal that suicide is a sin is rarely helpful. However, discussing suicide to reveal a person's worldview may be a way to reach into him or her (7). In examining the Christian worldview, one discovers that all people are creatures created and belonging to God, all people are created in the image of God, and therefore it is sin to commit suicide (10).He defined suicide in this way: "suicide is the product of a continuous transaction between the person's heart, his symptoms of depression, the levels and types of stressors in his environment, and the strategies he uses to cope with his depression and life circumstances" (13). The person believes that the pain he or she is feeling is too great to keep living. This pain is associated with some sort of "felt need," and he or she believes there is no way to change his or her circumstance (14ff).He argues there are five ways in which one can help someone who is suicidal: first, acknowledge that his or her pain is real. Second, help him or her discern that the pain being felt is due to the lack of a "felt need." Third, challenge his or her beliefs that are leading to suicidal thoughts. Fourth, help him or her discern that there is hope. Fifth, help him or her to understand that some "felt needs" are sinful or are caused by sin (18-23).He then discusses how to assess the risk of suicide. In assessing the risk, the question is about being observant: what do you see the person doing, is he or she isolating him or herself, is he or she abusing drugs or alcohol, is the person talking about suicide, as the person attempted suicide in the past, and so forth (24-31).I appreciate this work for its argument that it is biblically and rationally sinful to commit suicide. I also appreciate the end of this little book in which the author talks about our need to really know and care for those around us - to be observant and to be ready to help in times of need. This is not a book I would give to someone who is suicidal: I have a feeling that this book is more likely to anger or upset someone considering suicide - of course, this book is written for those trying to help those who are considering suicide. As useful as this book is, I'm not sure my question has been answered: perhaps the answer is "to love one's neighbor" - to be extremely intentionally involved with people around us, such that when a person is so emotionally distraught that he or she will receive our being there and listening, even if we don't know what else to offer.

I bought it for my personal bookshelf to further my knowledge. Found it helpful and easy to read. Wish there was more Jeffrey S. Black wrote. Seller sold this to me quickly and in great condition.

Help for the hurting heart

Excellent help to understand and intervene in a suicidal persons life

It is impossible to tactfully delve into such a deep and extensive topic in such a short booklet, but I found Dr. Black did a great job at penning his thoughts and some important information in these pages. Not everyone wants to read a plethora of books on the topic, and to have a small, concise, and pointed booklet to give some pertinent advise on and direction when it comes to the topic of suicide was very helpful.

This mini-series covers modern issues that people face. It gives biblical answers to the hard questions. Excellent source for any pastor or counselor.

Dr. Montgomery studied geology at Stanford and geomorphology at UC Berk. He has travelled widely and studied how cultures fail when they let their soil erode. His writing style is superior as is his commitment to his subject of interest. If you w ant to get down in the dirt about how to survive, this is the most important book to read. I rarely put my Oasis down before I finished it. My primary interest now is soils. My mission is to do things as close to perfectly on my one quarter of an acre. The first premise is no tilling, using cover crops, composting, and moving into planting as many perennial food trees, shrubs, etc. as I can fit in.Read it, read it. read it. Do not let whatever soil you have blow away or wash away. Cherish your dirt as the most important thing you have because it is.

This is the dirt (the scoop) all right. It is a highly important book. Every policy maker in Washington and all the world's capitals should read it. This book gives a side of history that has been left out of the usual history books. And that is really too bad. This information needs to become widely known. There are a variety of eye-openers here, about numerous periods of history. This book not only teaches about agriculture and the misuse of land and soil, it also reveals a side of colonialism we usually do not think about. This colonialism has not yet completely disappeared. From another perspective: Never before have I appreciated the "humble" earthworm so much as I have since reading it. I never knew about rock weathering and the fact that earthworms literally create soil from rocks. We should bow down to earthworms. They make it possible for us to eat and live. The writing style is easily read. Yet emotionally, I find it hard to read more than one chapter at a time. I seem to need rest between them. They are very filling.

I had first learned about the destruction of Carthage and North Africa during the Roman Empire during an economic botany course in the 70’s. I also learned about the findings of environmental destruction determined from rodent middens studies in the Holy Land, Lebanon, Chaco Canyon, and other sites. Dirt provides a thorough chronical of the widespread degradation of soils by many other cultures throughout human history.Being a geologist, Montgomery tends to look at the situation in terms of dirt when the real harm is the loss of organic matter and the critical soil biology which are critical components of soil. Dirt is not soil. He paid only passing reference to soil biology and what he generally calls microbes. He could have made Dirt more relevant by including the work of soil microbiologists such as Elaine Ingham et. al. who have provided substantial research into the role of soil biology in plant growth and health.Dirt is a good and insightful book that would be important for environmentalist and agriculturalist to read along with American Canopy.

Are humans capable of learning from past mistakes? I consider myself more soil literate than most people, enough to recognize the process of desertification on the ground. I’ve long read about the rise and fall of civilizations based on the health of their soils. However, David Montgomery’s “Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations” provided a deeper, more riveting account of the repeated rise and fall, rise and fall, rise and fall of civilizations due to failure to learn from the past.Walking the reader through a history of agriculture throughout the world, Montgomery introduces different soil types and climate issues, as well as the social-political circumstances that contributed toward erosion and collapse of past civilizations. While some regions lost their soil and permanently collapsed, others recovered enough to allow the same mistakes to play out again and again. In general, agriculture and urban centers arose, cultivating the most favorable, typically level plots. Food production enabled a bigger population, which then added pressure to deforest and plow hilly uplands, resulting in a surge of erosion. Sometimes too slowly to perceive in human terms, erosion deteriorated the uplands and often buried the lowlands. Crop harvests crashed, and people either starved or migrated elsewhere, leading to collapse of civilization after a few centuries. The land was abandoned. Nature began to form new soil from bedrock, and many centuries later, people returned to make the same mistakes all over again. Not only did the boom and bust cycle repeat, but keen observers such as Aristotle and Plato diagnosed the problem and witnessed the remains of past civilizations, yet, they too were unable to change the outcome. It is easy to imagine some future soil sleuth will write a book about the collapse of the American empire due to soil loss. Maybe they will even find an old, tattered copy of Dirt: The Erosion of Civilization, and they will see that David Montgomery, like Aristotle and Plato, strived to call attention to the health of the soil.Better yet, let’s all read Montgomery’s book now and increase our soil awareness to avoid becoming trapped in the cycle of doom.

I found this book to be so engaging and informative, I have been giving them out as gifts. While I work in agriculture and know more than your average bear about soil, David Montgomery's book Dirt gave me a whole new insight and forever changed the way I look at society's relationship with soil and agriculture.I just ordered his newest book, The Hidden Half of Nature: The Microbial Roots of Life and Health, and cannot wait to dive in deeper on the topic.

Every person should take the time to read this revealing book. It talks about the world today, not some questionable computer model for the future. The earth is running out of fertile soil and the vast frontiers of new virgin land are gone. The agricultural practices of modern technology vs. the population growth are not sustainable. It's not too late, there are ways to learn the lessons of the past and do it right. The solution will take time, education and sacrifice. The book presents the hard evidence---you walk on it every day. Who will embrace the facts and be part of the solution?
