Flood of Lies: The St. Rita's Nursing Home Tragedy

From the Inside Flap

Flood of Lies, Cobb takes us deep inside a horrific personal and professional journey. . . . a tale of personal sacrifice that often pitted responsibility to family against professional duty. Flood of Lies is one of those rare books that takes us behind the scenes of a gut-wrenching, international story. . . . It is a great . . . story of personal and professional triumph."Richard Angelico, retired WDSU investigative reporterIn the media storm that followed Hurricane Katrina, one gruesome story captivated a horrified nation: thirty-five elderly residents of St. Rita's Nursing Home drowned when a wall of water hit the home like a bomb. Rumors abounded that owners Sal and Mabel Mangano tied residents to their beds and left them to drown, then bloat and rot in the Louisiana heat. News reporters and talk-show hosts spewed a constant stream of sensationalized reports based on incomplete information and hearsay. Almost no one believed that the Manganos could be innocent.Louisiana lawyer James A. Cobb, Jr., had made his career out of defending deep-pocketed corporate clients, easing his troubled conscience with martinis. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Cobb and his family lost everything. Amid the ruins, Cobb met the Manganos and was convinced not only of their innocence but also of their selflessness and courage on that fateful August day when they, too, lost everything. Cobb agreed to defend the Manganos against near-insurmountable odds. His decision was the start of an inner journey toward self-realization.In this true story of a family blamed for the wrongs of the government that prosecuted them, Cobb finds unexpected heroism, unrewarded devotion, and personal redemption.A trial lawyer since 1978, James A. Cobb, Jr., is a native New Orleanian. He graduated with honors from Tulane University Law School, and has since tried more than 130 cases to verdict across the Gulf South. Cobb has been a respected professor at Tulane Law School's trial advocacy program for more than thirty years and is a two-time recipient of the Monte M. Lemann Distinguished Teaching Award. He has been a visiting professor at many institutions, including Harvard Law School. He is a member of the bar in Louisiana, Texas, and Florida.Cobb earned widespread recognition after his involvement in the 1985 case against then-governor Edwin Edwards regarding nursing home approvals. Cobb lives with his family in New Orleans, Louisiana.

From the Back Cover

“When an elderly couple is charged with murder in the drowning deaths of thirty-five bed-ridden residents of St. Rita’s Nursing Home, an emotional edge-of-your-seat thriller takes off like a shot! The players: a wily and profane defense lawyer, a ferocious prosecutor, vengeful families of the victims, and a ravenous media that brands the defendants ‘Monsters of Hurricane Katrina.’ My advice—block out enough time to read this wonderful book in one sitting.”—John Berendt, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil“In Flood of Lies Cobb—a profane, hard-drinking New Orleans resident with a racy prose style—tells the story of what happened as he and his partners prepared to defend the Manganos in court. . . . While Cobb is hardly a disinterested narrator, he is an irresistible one. . . . Flood of Lies isn’t an example of objective reporting; it is a passionate and personal book, artfully constructed to maximize suspense, and carried along by the compelling narrative voice of Cobb. Above all, it reminds us of how messy and imperfect are the processes of law, how chancy are the outcomes of trials, how outrageously costly, both financially and emotionally, the pursuit of justice can be.”—Michael Dirda, the Washington Post“Cobb’s kaleidoscopic personality drives the momentum in what amounts to a war story of jurisprudence. . . . With Cobb’s pugilistic legal tactics high-octane personality for plot fuel, Flood of Lies becomes a book you wish wouldn’t end.”—Jason Berry, the Daily Beast“This is more than a story about Katrina. It is that, told from an original perspective, but it’s also a story of abuse of power, of political ambition, of survival, and of a trying to make life ordinary again—when ordinariness amounts to triumph.”—John M. Barry, Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America “What Jim Cobb captures better than any writer I’ve read is how deeply the media’s pre-trial feeding-frenzy shaped public perceptions about the St. Rita’s nursing home tragedy. . . . Cobb’s brash, brilliant storytelling takes you behind the scenes of an important test for the American system of justice.”—Ken Bode, former national political correspondent, NBC NewsFront-jacket photograph © CARLOS BARRIA/Corbis

New Orleans attorney Jim Cobb has written a behind-the-scenes trial book like no other. It is a passionate, profane and highly-readable account of the signature horror of Hurricane Katrina - the drowning deaths of 35 nursing home patients. When the book opens, it is two years after the storm and Cobb is in court, defending the Sal and Mabel Mangano, owners of St. Rita's Nursing Home, who've been charged criminally with the deaths. They face the prospect of spending their golden years behind bars. The families of the victims are out for blood; they arrive for the trial's last day all dressed in black. Cobb's law partners, who have been trying to resurrect their Katrina-flattened law practice while he represents the most-despised people in Louisiana, are barely speaking to him. Cobb himself is buried under a mountain of personal debt as he simultaneously struggled to rebuild his own flooded house and mount a defense he's not sure his clients can afford.Cobb's chief adversary is Louisiana's Attorney General, a politically ambitious first-termer facing reelection, Charles Foti. The AG served three decades as the criminal sheriff of Orleans Parish and was known more as an astute political operator than a student of the law. In the days after Katrina, Foti stoked public outrage against the Manganos with a media campaign that vilified the couple so thoroughly most Louisianans thought the Manganos deserved whatever charges the state could muster up. And the state mustered up a full slate: Each of the Manganos was charged with 35 counts of negligent homicide and 24 counts of cruelty to the elderly and infirm -- for a total of 118 counts.Cobb had never defended a criminal case before. When he signed on to defend the Manganos, he was a burned out attorney who spent his professional life defending insurance companies against negligence claims and occasionally called on, as he bluntly states, "to deprive widows and orphans of compensation." Not exactly the Atticus Finch role he envisioned as a law student. And so the struggle to save the Manganos also became one to save himself.Cobb evacuated his family to Houston in advance of the storm. He concluded that the couple's decision to ride out the storm at St. Rita's instead of evacuating "could hardly be called wise."Yet he wonders: "Did that make it criminal?"For the answer, Cobb takes readers on an unforgettable journey through a politically-charged case that evolved into a trial of all that had gone wrong at Katrina. At times, the twists and turns are so incredible, the book reads like one of John Grisham's legal thrillers. The difference, of course, is that Cobb's tale is heart-breakingly and maddeningly real.

James Cobb not only tells the true story of what happened at St. Rita's Nursing Home during Katrina and the public vendetta and legal hell the couple who owned it, the Manganos, went through after, he weaves his own family's struggles to come to grips with the devastation of Katrina into a manic, breathlessly-paced, sometimes horrifying, sometimes hilarious page-turner. You won't believe what almost everybody in this book goes through, and there are some details you never knew and will never forget, like the animals fleeing in advance of the 6-ft. wall of water racing toward the nursing home. A remarkable read, with absolutely no slow parts-even the courtroom scenes are dynamic and immediate. If you know the story of the Manganos and St. Rita's, maybe remember the outcome of the trial but still think something was amiss, you need to read this. Better yet, if you just want to read the most gripping, exciting, non-fiction roller coaster book of the year, get it. Oh man they have GOT to make a movie of this...

Cobb does a great job in taking you behind the scene of perhaps the worst natural conflagration to hit our shores Ind now we have Houston).I've been a Navy prosecutor and now I'm retiring as a federal judge after serving 24 years on the bench. Louisiana's AG's office during the trial was abysmal and bordering on the unethical. Cobb does a great job of creating the mood and the narrow-mindedness of incompetent state and federal officials. There was a crime committed, a tale Cobb eloquently and accurately portrays. An intentional crime committed by a state justice system's political machine against victims of a natural disaster. I wonder how those prosecutors feel, knowing they tried to override justice. Even by Louisiana's standards, they smelled as bad as the aftermath of the storm.Good for Cobb. He did good!

I read a lot of books but this one has my vote for the year as being the one I will recommend. it read it completely in less than 24 hours. From the very beginning it grabbed me and I could not put it down till I finished. This book would make a GREAT movie. I wish it would be made into a movie because most people only take what the media says as fact and never bothers to read more in detail on a subject. This is the story about the case of the owners charged in the 35 deaths of St Rita's Nursing Home during Hurricane Katrina. It is written by the attorney who defended them and PRAISE GOD to him for defending this poor couple against an irresponsible Attorney General's office. This is one of those stories that needed to be told and it was incredibly well written. It was funny and sad at the same time because the author's personality shines through so much in the writing. The TRUE story needed to be told and I am so glad he has told it.This is a MUST READ!!! Hope it becomes a movie!!!

Jim Cobb is an excellent legal thriller author. He inserts the reader into the drama with him, describing his internal feelings and what he had for lunch alongside descriptions of people involved in this true story, and transcripts directly from what was an emotional roller-coaster of a trial for all involved. The story was engaging and instructive, and Mr. Cobb's genuine concern for his clients inspiring. I look forward to reading more from him, and I would love to be a student in one of his classes!

Loved the book. So typical of people being influenced by the media. Now I know the real story. The owners of the nursing home were good people that genuinely cares for the residents. Such a sad story. I also admired the lawyer who stuck by the owners so they could tell them real story. It was a heartbreaking story that resonates that youve have to have been there to understand the crisis they were faced with. The water came in so fast that they're wasn't enough time to save everyone. Although they tried and that's what we need to remember out of this tragedy. So sad.
