Review

"Humans make progress by discovering new ideas, but also, importantly, by repurposing the ones that already exist. Boynton and Fisher show how each of us can get better at this critical skill, identifying and reapplying existing ideas." ―Paul Romer, Senior Fellow, Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research “Hunting is an apt metaphor.  Ideas exist everywhere in the wild. The trick is knowing where to look for them and how to capture them.  Boynton and Fischer tell us how.” ―Ron Sargent, Chairman & CEO, Staples, Inc. “The Idea Hunter is unique.  It’s about curiosity, agility and perpetually hunting for better ideas.  It’s a must read for anyone who wants to compete and collaborate more effectively each and every day.” ―Greg Brown, President & CEO, Motorola Solutions. “This book upends a number of persistent myths about innovation and what it takes to be an ‘idea person.’ It shows that what’s required is not spectacular creativity or remarkable IQ, but curiosity—a genuine desire to engage in a daily search for ideas.  It will help transform the way you and your business operate.” ―Jay Hooley, Chairman, President & CEO, State Street Corporation “The Idea Hunter is not only an enjoyable read. It offers a practical method so that anyone or any firm can learn the secrets of harnessing the power of ideas to drive success.” ― Laura J. Sen, President & CEO, BJ’s Wholesale Club “Boynton and Fischer offer powerful and practical advice on how to jump-shift the flow of ideas in your organization.  This will become required reading for any leader intent on shaping a high-performance organization.” ―Michael D. White, Chairman & CEO, DirecTV Observe, ask questions, be curious, dare to throw odd ideas into a group’s conversation to make it better. Be an Idea Hunter! ―Ton Büchner, CEO, Sulzer, Ltd “My company aims to add about $4 billion in new sales every year. This won’t be possible without everyone in the organization contributing new ideas. The Idea Hunter is an essential guide to systematically developing this critical capability.” ― Werner Geissler, Vice Chairman, Global Operations, Procter & Gamble “Thrilling, fun, and inspiring, The Idea Hunter tells stories and discerns patterns of behavior and habits shared by the great innovators of the past century. It finds similarities among the greats ranging from Warren Buffet to Steve Jobs, and even going back earlier in the century to Walt Disney and Thomas Edison. Through brief stories and simple self-reflection exercises, this book distills the quirky essence of leading imagination in a way we can consume it, and hopefully aspire to become one with it. ― Aaron C. Sylvan, Serial Entrepreneur and Technologist (One Technology, TrustWorks, LemonadeHeroes, Sylvan Social Technology) “We rely on using the ideas of thousands of experts to win against tough competition in a crowded market. Using The Idea Hunter as a trail map, any leader can win the daily wars of ideas that differentiate the innovator from the rest.” ―Jack Hughes, Chairman and Co-founder, TopCoder, Inc. “Idea hunters are normal people, with a normal life in a common social contest. The only difference is that they have an open mind and are skilled in searching. This brilliant book is an ideal guide to achieve an open mind in our complex world.” ―Maurizio Marinelli, Visual Artist & President of Baskerville Research Center on Communication, Bologna, Italy

From the Inside Flap

"Breakaway ideas come to those who are in the habit of looking for them." —from the Introduction Ideas are arguably the most valuable asset in an information-based economy. But how do you find the best ideas—the kind that can boost careers, change organizations, and ramp up the value of projects? Why do some people seem to come up with these ideas whenever they need them? In this myth-busting book, the authors reveal that great business ideas do not spring from innate creativity, or necessarily from the minds of brilliant people. High-value ideas come to those people who are in the habit of looking for such ideas—all around them, all the time. These are the Idea Hunters. Such people do not buy into the notion that the only great idea is a pristinely original one. They know better. They understand that game-changing ideas are already out there, waiting to be spotted and then shaped into an innovation. The authors present an eclectic band of Idea Hunters, ranging from Thomas Edison, Mary Kay Ash, and Walt Disney, to Warren Buffett, Apple's Phil Schiller, and others including the leaders of Twitter, Pixar Animation Studios, and the Boston Beer Company. These people have certain characteristics embodied in the four I-D-E-A principles (Interested, Diverse, Exercised, and Agile). They also know their gig—their personal mission, and why it matters. They don't let the organization, job, industry, or profession define their Idea Hunt. And they recognize how the world around them connects with their plans and projects. Step by step, The Idea Hunter unveils a strategy for unearthing new ideas in any industry or organ- ization. It is a must-have resource for anyone who wants to tap into the successful business ideas that are just waiting to be rediscovered.

Attending the Chief Executives's Club of Boston on 5/13/2011, we found this amazing book on our chair - The Idea Hunter and we left the business lunch at 2:30 and I had devoured the book twice with so many notes written in the edges by the end of the day. Thank you Andy Boynton (Co-author) and Dean of the Carroll School of Management of Boston College for graciously sharing this gem with us as we now "Pay it Forward" and share it with may key decision makers in all aspect of life including our children who are graduates of Amherst College, Wellesley College and attending Bentley University in undergraduate degrees and graduates of Tabor Academy. We look to support many organizations such as our fine hospital at Boston known as Man's Greatest Hospital - MGH and many of the heads of this fine institution who has treated me and put me into remission for NHL. It starts with ..."Know Your Circle of Competence and Stay Within that Circle ....Know Your Gig and Warren Buffett and Ted Williams, Red Sox slugger share this best when "Ted Williams revealed the secret of his success in his book, The Science of Hitting. Nick-named the "Splendid Splinter", his approach was to carve the strike zone into 77 cells, each one the size of a baseball. He swung at the balls that landed in his best cells, and let the others whizz by, even if it meant being called out on strikes once in a while. As Buffett once remarked at a shareholder's meeting, Williams knew that "waiting for the fat pitch would mean a trip to the Hall of Fame. Swinging indiscriminately would mean a ticket to the minors."The secret to a successful business is knowing how to manage using scientific and mathematical approaches as illustrated by the mathematical approach that Ted Williams used to master his success with the 77 cells and the scientific approach that was implemented - This is a key piece of information to note......The I-D-E-A Principle:I - INTERESTED - BE INTERESTED, NOT JUST INTERESTING Keep your brain open Ideawork # 1: Selling the Best Hour of the Day to YourselfD - DIVERSE - Ideas are everywhere (find a way to collect them and save them) Bridging distant worlds.... Art Linkletter saw Walt filling notebooks with sketchese and writing and asked what he was doing and he shared...."I'm making notes about something that I've always dreamed of, a great, great playground for the hcildrena dn families of America." The dream became a splendid realty in 1955 with the opening of Disneyland in California.Entrepreneur Puneet Nanda story....Dr. Fresh, Present was having problems with his daughter not wanting to brush her teeth. He observed how much she loved her sneakers with flashing lights and so he invented the Firefly, a toothbrush with flashing lights that blink for sixty seconds and is now the linchpin of a $44.3 million company and created a contest for youngsters for other toothbrush designs which was won by a South Carolina girl who designed a toothbrush that speaks, reminding people to turn off the tap while they are brushing their teeth and won a free trip to Disneyland. The ideas are endless and we highly recommend picking up several copies of this newly released book as gifts to encourage everyone to exercise their thinking powers through observation. So often, an idea is created through a painful tolerance that you wish to fix or create a solution for it. This book reminds me of the "Destination Imagination" that our children were involved in during their school years along with the great materials shared by Inscape Publishing called - Innovate with Care - CARE where the Z principle is explored sharing the five types of people that are needed to success in bringing a successful idea to fruition-CARE - Creators, Advancers, Resisters and Executors and Facilitators who keep the ball moving through the organization through the C - A - R - E components. The other TV show that reminds me so much of the idea exploration that works hand in hand with this amazing resource - is Shark Tank where people come to investors to share their unique ideas for hopes of having cash infusion to take them to the next step.We have many copies available at our office Community Library and plan to sprinkle this great book - The Idea Hunter within all the leaders of the colleges, university, hospitals, organizations that we support along with business leaders in the community and beyond - Looking forward to "Paying Forward" - This book is too great to not have it reach as far as it can go....Thank you so much Andy Boynton for your most generous heart and sharing your "Aha's" with us through this great book. Can hardly wait for your second and third......Cindy and Geoff Worrell

Good book, must read for start ups

Interesting read, highly recommend.

Very interesting book that has you look at things differently from an inventor/product designer aspect. Well done.

Excellent source to help you with your I D E A hunt - I have listened to the audio version to/from work 3 or 4 times already

The advice is kind of obvious. I give it 3 stars because even if the book is obvious, it helped me to find a great and likable idea.

The premise of the book is this: There are valuable lessons to be learned from those who have highly-developed skills that enable them to "find the best ideas and make them happen." Better yet, these are skills that almost anyone else can develop in combination with (a) an insatiable curiosity to understand what works, what doesn't, and why; (b) an eagerness to communicate, cooperate, and - most important of all - collaborate/co-create with others; and (c) determination to sustain the "hunt" (Thomas Edison's term for his search for solutions) despite whatever resistance, ridicule, and setbacks that may be encountered. With assistance from William Bole, Andy Boyton and Bill Fischer explain in this book what they The DeepDive(tm), a combination of brainstorming, prototyping and feedback loops merged into an approach they devised that executives can use with teams to help develop solutions for specific business challenges. The focus of the book is on a process called I.D.E.A. whose foundation consists of four principles: Interested (i.e. insatiable curiosity), Diverse (i.e. locating or generating as many different ideas as possible from as many different sources as possible), Exercised (e.g. constant, relentless, sharply-focused observation of mental, emotional, and intuitive activity as well as whatever the senses experience in the physical world), and finally, Agile (i.e. developing cognitive and analytical skills that are razor-sharp, flexible, and resilient). Actually, every one in an organization (including, especially, C-level executives) should continuously strengthen the skills each of these principles requires because all organizations needo Idea Hunters (with in satiable curiosity)o Idea Finders (who recognize possibilities no one else does)o Idea Evaluators (who have high-standards and are baggage-free)o Idea Marketers (to create demand, both internally and externally)o Idea Refiners (who understand that improvement is an on-going process, not a destination)Note: I presume to suggest that when a "Best Ideas" team is formed, that its members possess cross-functional talents (essential to evangelism during barrier removal) and that the model be appropriate to the given organization's needs, interests, resources, and goals; also, that formulation of the model be based on this book as well as on what Pixar and IDEO do and how they do it. Caveat: Adapt rather than adopt best practices.Boynton and Fischer brilliantly explain which habits are most important during the "hunt" (Pages 90-94), what "Idea Flow" is and does as well as how to sustain it (101-119), and how to create great conversations (129-141). I was especially interested in their insertion of four sets of "IdeaWork" observations and recommendations. The first: Selling [actually Setting Aside] the Best Hour of the Day at [for] Yourself" (39-43), #2: "The I's and the T's" (65-68); #3: "Assembling an Idea Portfolio" (91-97), and #4: "Ready-Set, Launch" (121-127). Value-added benefits are plentiful. For example, Boynton and Fischer include a "Self Assessment" (1`46-150 that, all by itself, is worth far more than the cost of the book. Also an outstanding "References" section comprised of the books, articles, and online resources they recommend. In addition to the books that Andy Boynton and Bill Fischer recommend, I presume to add two by Tom Kelley (The Art of Innovation and The Ten Faces of Innovation) as well as two more recently published books, David Kord Murray's Borrowing Brilliance and Josh Linkner's Disciplined Dreaming.

For One More Day, by Mitch Albom

From Publishers Weekly

In this second novel from Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven author Albom, grief-stricken Charles "Chick" Benetto goes into an alcoholic tailspin when his always-attentive mother, Pauline, dies. Framed as an "as told to" story, Chick quickly narrates her funeral; his drink-fueled loss of savings, job ("sales") and family; and his descent into loneliness and isolation. After a suicide attempt, Chick encounters Pauline's ghost. Together, the two revisit Pauline's travails raising her children alone after his father abandons them: she braves the town's disapproval of her divorce and works at a beauty parlor, taking an extra job to put money aside for the children's education. Pauline cringes at the heartache Chick inflicted as a demanding child, obnoxious teen and brusque, oblivious adult chasing the will-o'-the-wisp of a baseball career. Through their story, Albom foregrounds family sanctity, maternal self-sacrifice and the destructive power of personal ambition and male self-involvement. He wields pathos as if it were a Louisville Slugger—shoveling dirt into Pauline's grave, Chick hears her spirit cry out, " 'Oh, Charley. How could you?' "—but Albom often strikes a nerve on his way to the heart. (Sept. 26) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

I've been a Mitch Albom fan ever since reading "The Five People You Meet in Heaven". I was curious about "for one more day" because it was about a mother's love, and I lost my mother to illness 16 years ago. I am 70 years old and had a good life, largely thanks to my mother's guidance in my early years. Through her love and constant encouragement, she taught me to appreciate and hone my natural gifts in life. The mother in "for one more day" is like that with her son; she loves her son and is very involved with his upbringing. The son is rebellious to the mother's gentle guidance and strives to win the approval of his emotionally distant father. Mitch Albom has such an ear for the every day dialog that occurs in a family's home. The mother is steadfastly devoted to her son, even as he openly prefers his father's "manly" style. This is the third book I've read by Mitch, and a constant thread in these 3 books is that someone cares and makes it known to the recipients with a combination of deeds and words. Also, often, the caring is not immediately recognized or appreciated. However, over time, the care receiver sees the care shining through and feels blessed by it.After reading this book, I spent a lot of time thinking about my mother and what I would say and do if I could spend just one more day with her. I would ask her what she liked about how I turned out, how she liked my 3 adult children, and how she liked the way I renovated her old house before I sold it 6 years ago.For those of you who lost a beloved parent, give this book a try.. Then spend some time thinking about having that parent with you for a day, just the two of you. Mitch Albom inspires you to think about your life from a different perspective. Who in your life loved you and gave their all on your behalf? Reading this book will make you a little sad, but eventually, you'll smile more whenever you think about that special parent.

Meet Chick Benetto (Charley). He's faced a life of emotional pain enduring unfulfilled ambitions, alcohol abuse, divorce, an estranged daughter, a broken childhood home, and an extremely shortened pro baseball career. To say his life has been unfulfilling is an understatement.Chick returns to his abandoned childhood home after two bungled suicide attempts. Chick gets "One more day" after encountering the spirit of his deceased mom. Chick thoughtlessly took her for granted during childhood and through his less than stellar adult life.Miraculously, Chick can now apologize to mom for his ingratitude regarding the sacrifices she made as a single, working mother. He lied, his way through life, drank heavily, made one bad decision after another. He respected no one, not even himself. The author tells his story beautifully, particularly in Chick's recollections of his mother's wisdom. Mr. Albom gives mom (Pauline) a great deal of depth and a complex character which spans familiar ideas of motherhood in the '50s. The gentle, knowing ways of Pauline provide Chick with an unconditional love, even in death. She's a likeable, lovable woman; though I had a hard time feeling empathy for him.In the end, Mr. Albom provides the reader with a short epilogue which brings this very loving story to a heartening end. Albom's books are thought provoking and this one is no different.

I loved this book so much; having lost my oldest son this past June I was so touched and moved that as soon as I finished, I turned to page one and started all over again. Made me sad, yet inspired; all I want is just one more day with my boy. He passed away unexpectedly and tragically and I never got a chance to say goodbye or get that last hug and kiss and I love you Mom that I would get each time we visited. Our last 2 conversations were via the phone (2 days before he died) and via text (1 day before he slipped into a week long coma which he never came out of). I feel like I can't let him go because I need that proper goodbye...... This book left me feeling like maybe one day I'll get my wish.

This is a beautiful and touching mother and son story that will make you reconsider how you treat your own mother.:)I hope my review has been helpful to you. Albom's book reminds us we all have regrets and yearnings to make up for what we said or didn't say to our loved ones. I particularly liked the chapters where he wrote about how his mother had stood up and supported him. The heart wrenching chapters were when he described how he did not support her. Hopefully, after reading this, we will be reminded that we only have today to let our loved ones know that we care!

Can Mitch Albon write a bad book? Every book I have read from this author have just been outstanding. This is a favorite I think. I would give the world to spend one day with my Mom. This book speaks to everyone. We all have Moms. I had the best Mom. She developed Alzheimer's in her 70's. By the time she died on Christmas day 2013 I had an up close personal education on Alzheimer's and it sucks. These books are a quick read and he always brings something up that relates to any reader. I highly recommend this book and any book written by Mitch Albon.
