Wow this was a little different then I was expecting but mostly what I was hoping for. I was expecting a fun 50s bmovie insired romp with experimental art and I got that. I also got some surprisingly touching and chilling storys and while I didn't break into tears or hesitate to turn the page out of horror all of them got me to care about the characters even ones I would just hate and be indifferent to in lesser writing and my eyes did water at times and the art is some of the most breath taking and purposeful i've ever seen.Now this book isn't something i'd put on par with say neil gaimans the sandman and it gets off to a slow start and had a couple clunky moments towards the beginning and it didn't scare me as much as I would usually want a horror comic to(tbh though a lot of stuff people think is great doesn't) but if you're a fan of well realized experimental comics, old bmovies, or pre comics code horror books, or just want a comic to give you some chills, feels, and fun craziness, or just really want something different I think you'll find a lot to love or at least like.Also if you're someone who hestitates on trying new books out of fear they'll have forced politics or social justice stuff in them this book has none.

Probably one of the creepiest comics I've read in a while. Stories are stand alone but with an intertwining thread. I can't wait for Volume 2!!

Arrived on time and as advertised. The tiniest bit of wear on the spine, hardly noticeable.

This is an anthology series where each issue is a self-contained story with different characters. What pulls them together as a collection is that they all feature the Ice Cream Man. While one of the stories was decidedly horror as a whole I'd rather call them weird tales. The first was the best of the four contained here. After that, they decreased in interest for me and I found the entire gimmick got old fast. I'll say that each story does have a bit of a thrill to make it a decent enough way to spend a quick half hour. The illustration art is unimpressive.

I wanted this book so I could teach my 12 year old grandson how to program. He really likes the book,

Delphi Programming for Dummies is excellent. The book is structured very clearly. The reader is introduced to Delphi very carefully and smoothly. When no technical words are necessary, none are used. The language used is very natural and sometimes even funny. This makes this book actually pleasant to read. The great thing is that this book (as promised by the title) does explain a lot about the programming part of Delphi, and not just about the components (which are also described). A great way to start working with Delphi.

Initially apprehensive to read a "relationships" book, I decided to go ahead and read it due to a recently ended relationship and the assurance that this book is deeply rooted in science. And I am so glad that I read this book, principally for the succinct summary of hundreds of academic studies on psychology, relationships, divorce, attachment theory, and happiness.Seeing that each conclusion the author posits is based not just one or two, but many repeatable academic studies is very reassuring. I felt like I was able to much better understand myself as a human being, particularly the biology of attraction and the fundamental changes in relationships over the last 200 years due to increased life expectancy and societal shifts.There are parts of the book where I felt like the author was coaching me on how to make better dating decisions, which is fine, but felt a bit odd as much of the focus on the book was presenting science rather than relationship coaching. I think Dr. Tashiro probably just couldn't help himself, and I don't fault him for doing it. When I obliged to do the tests presented in the book, I went to the noted website to complete them and found the website to be incomplete and not have the test results represented in the book.At times the conclusions were a bit muddled; I thought the discussion on attachment theory was interesting but lacking in finality. After spending a couple hours researching attachment theory online, it makes sense now that the conclusions were weak because there don't seem to be strong correlations between long-term relationship success and attachment type among adults."The Science of Happily Ever After" has many virtues and the survey of such a massive amount of research is really worth reading, and it is made better by the weave of interesting personal stories that illustrate the science in action. In the end, I give the book 5/5 stars despite its few shortcomings. I highly recommend this book.

In this very entertainingly written book, TyTashiro comes up with plenty of evidence to show that it's the criteria we use for choosing our partners that lead us astray into passing over people who might be ideal for us or into relationships that fail sooner rather than later.The incredibly high divorce rate is ample proof that most of us are doing something wrong when choosing our partners and the book kicks off with a reasoned explanation of why the criteria we use are not relevant to the levels of relationship satisfaction we experience and how long those relationships last.The book rang plenty of bells for me but the loudest was that many of us are also using too many criteria when choosing our partners which can often cut down the pool of possibles to a very few or even none. Ty reckons you've pretty well only got three wishes before you've cut down the number of possibles to the extent that you'll have to be very lucky indeed to stumble across one of them.With the thought that you've only got three wishes, it makes perfect sense not to waste any of them on irrelevancies and Ty suggests traits that you should really be looking for in your partner (Hint: they don't include looks or money). A very important one is your prospective partner's attachment style. Put very simply, an attachment style is how that person will react when things go a bit pear-shaped in your world and you go to them seeking comfort and reassurance. People normally echo the attachment style shown to them by their primary caregivers in childhood and Ty reveals how to determine if your prospective partner's attachment style makes them a good long-term prospect or not.Finding a person with the traits Ty suggests is very much easier than, for example, finding someone who looks like Cameron Diaz and whose father owns a brewery. I have read the prose version of The Giver too many times to count, so I was excited when the graphic novel version was announced and eager to read it when it arrived. P. Craig Russell does an excellent job of illustrating Jonas's world and bringing "sameness" to life. The use of blues instead of greytones to indicate the lack of color is extraordinarily effective, as is the use of a single color in most of the memories that Jonas receives from the Giver. I read an interview with Russell in which he discussed his interpretation of the book's ending (no spoilers here, and we're just going to ignore that the other three books in the Giver Quartet exist) and was pleased to read that he and I shared our view of how the book ends. The graphic rendering of the ending is very well done--and still somewhat open for interpretation. All that said, the fact that I was able to SEE all the horrors of Jonas's society made everything so much worse. It was one thing reading it and imagining it myself, but it was a completely different animal when it was laid out in visual form on the page. Again, no spoilers, but I was extremely affected by chapter 20 and onwards, to the point where I can say that this is an extraordinary and important graphic novel that I never want to read again.

I knew this was going to be good, but I had no idea that it would be so incredibly close to the novel. There is a lot of text here accompanying the gorgeous illustrations. I'd say that 80% of the text from the novel is here if not more. It's a lot denser and word-rich than I expected it to be. Wow! While I enjoyed the movie version of "The Giver", I was not entirely happy with the ginormous changes Hollywood made to Jonas and his community. This graphic novel doesn't age Jonas or create love triangles; luckily for all of us it's a very faithful and loving take on this beloved book.

This is absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to give it to my daughter for Valentine's Day tomorrow! The Giver has been my all time favorite book since I was a child. I read it periodically and have the quartet myself. I have read the majority of it to my daughter but I believe this would help her envision the book more. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and does the book complete justice! Thank you, Lois Lowry and Craig Russell, for having the vision to create this!

This is a masterpiece. I have rarely, if ever, been so moved by a work of graphic fiction. Mr. Russell just keeps getting better and better. His pacing, line work and composition are all flawless. I’m going to want to have several copies on hand to give as gifts to friends and family. Do yourself a favor and pick this up!

Loved it. Great art, great story. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed. I plan on reading the novel next.

So as someone who struggled with Shakespeare in high school, the first time I ever understood it was reading "Hamlet On a Rooftop" by Will Eisner—a fantastic, seminal creator you should look up if you've never heard of him. It was the “To be or not to be” speech, acted out on a tenement rooftop by a young dude with a switchblade, and I immediately went, “Whoa, this all makes SENSE now. They should use comics to teach English—no, they should use comics to teach EVERYTHING!" And I still believe that. I’ve told parents if they're having a tough time getting their kids to read, or the kids are just having a tough time reading period, give 'em a comic book; that magical blend of words and pictures can work wonders. So the review here from the 6th grade teacher now using the graphic novel to teach the book to English-language learners? Brilliant. Makes my heart beat a little bit faster for an art form I’ve loved so much for so long. Mahalo. And, oh yeah, what about MY review, lol? Well, for starters, P. Craig Russell is my favorite artist/storyteller in the industry today, has been for many, many years. He is, hands down, THE adapter of literary (and operatic) work in the field because he doesn't change ANYTHING text-wise, so all the writing is straight from the source; and he visually embellishes things that are only suggested, which is what a good artist should do. Anyway, I’d heard of The Giver over the years but hadn’t read it, and I have to say that, for me at least, it works BETTER as a comic. I think just reading about this starkly metaphorical community—SPOILER ALERT—where EVERYTHING is regulated, from thoughts and feelings to landscape and weather, would’ve gotten dull and monotonous because, well, the world of the book is numbingly dull and monotonous. Of course, there’s a slight, ever-present tone of discomfort and unsettledness lurking just below the surface, and it’s disturbing…but it’s subtle. Which is where the visual storytelling of Mr. Russell comes in: It heightens the sameness and unsettledness in that statically alive way that isn't film, theatre, illustration, or prose, but incorporates ALL those elements and is unique to the comic medium. Like Eisner did with Shakespeare, Russell makes me get the story in way I wouldn't have if it was just words. But, hey, I’m biased. I’m a forever kid who had the toughest time in high school English and just wanted to read comics all day long. And maybe if I’d had something like The Giver graphic novel available to me, it wouldn’t have been so bad. Get yourself a copy and be a kid again.

I absolutely adored this book. I initially came across this book at a gas station few days into our trip and I'm not sure what made me pick up this random book, except that we had noticed... some quirks. I found Icelanders and their culture to be incredibly interesting and unique, yet fascinatingly paradoxical at times. This book was an absolute delight to read, insightful in many ways, and helped this one tourist going around in a circle understand and see beyond the hot dogs, wool sweaters, and beautiful vistas. I would also recommend some of the author's other little books as well.

Just back from an all too brief visit to Iceland, I am curious to learn more about this strangely beautiful country and its people. This book has answered some questions, and whetted my appetite for more information.Being an Icelander raised mainly abroad, the author is in a unique position to explain the country to non-Icelanders. Of course, as she is careful to make very clear, this is Iceland seen through one person's filter. Because it's so openly a personal perspective I'd have liked to have had more of an extended author bio upfront, explaining why her family left, where she has lived, where she studied, jobs, whom she is married to, number of children, other family still in Iceland? etc. in order for me to put her viewpoints into context. I get the feeling she is well-known and perhaps she assumes people know her back story already, but I don't. However, not knowing that stuff doesn't keep this from being a well-written and fascinating read!This book is an excellent brief introduction to contemporary Icelandic society. I highly recommend it as a starting place to anyone who, like me, is ignorant but sincerely interested. I'd love to see a "for further reading" list of books (fiction and non-fiction) by other authors or even movies that the author recommends, for more Icelandic perspectives. Of course, I definitely plan to read more by Alda Sigmundsdóttir!

I'm planning a trip to Iceland soon and got this because it seemed like a quick cultural introduction. I've read many of the Icelandic Sagas and have a decent understanding of Icelandic history, but beyond the 13th century (and Bjartur of Summerhouse much later) I don't know much about modern culture and how Iceland has adapted to globalization and the connections that modern technology affords us.Alda Sigmundsdottir does an excellent job of identifying, explaining, and commenting on some of Iceland's major cultural idiosyncrasies and the influences that contribute to them. She bridges a gap between outsider and native because she is an Icelander by name and genes but was raised abroad and thus has experienced both sides. And, despite accurate (or at least it sounds accurate but we'll see when I visit) analysis of the country's culture and traditions, Alda keeps the whole thing light and casual and funny. I read this in spurts over the course of about a week, but it could be completed within a few hours. Each essay only takes a few minutes to read.Overall, this provides insight into a country that I don't think the globe really knows what to do with. It's such a unique little island that nowhere else on earth is similar. It's definitely worth the read and provides a good base to start from when you're visiting and looking to experience Iceland with a deeper understanding. Plus it was short and fun.

Delightfully entertaining, telling you everything you want to know about how Icelanders live and think. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and gained a great deal of information, while connecting you with the differences in the beliefs and traditions of the true Icelanders. A great book of insight.

Alda's personal history gives her a unique perspective on Icelandic culture. In essence, she's a Stranger in a Strange Land (must read scifi novel by Robert A. Heinlen). Alda was born in Iceland, but was raised mostly in Canada and Western Europe, moving back to Iceland when she was in her 30's. Whatever Alda missed out on by attending elementary school, secondary school and college abroad, she has more than made up for with her own research. Although Alda has clearly done quite a bit of academic research, most of the knowledge presented in this book is based on her personal experience of trying to "grok" (Heinlein reference) the social norms and culture that is both familiar and foreign to her. What I love most about this book is Alda's writing style - conversational, clever, humorous and incredibly informative. I couldn't put it down. In sumarry, both this book and Alda's other book, The Little Book of Icelandic, is a must read for anyone planning a visit to Iceland. If you're not planning a trip to Iceland, you should...it's an amazing "re-creational" experience.

It started about two weeks ago when I ordered a copy of the author’s other book, “The Little Book of Icelandic.” Now I’m obsessed — no — addicted. Suddenly, I own a copy of almost everything she’s written. This is another wonderful, hilarious page-turner that will hook you and never let you go.

Enjoyable and insightful book, though a quick read.Iceland has always been a curious place to me, because it is such a small country, with a unique geography and environment. I'm considering traveling there next fall, so I wanted to read a little bit about the culture. The essays were definitely interesting and helpful in learning a bit about Icelanders.

This is a very personal but at the same time quite comprehensive view of the Icelandic character and society, definitely worth reading before or during your trip there. Alda is an engaging writer. I highly recommend her other books as well,and if you are interested in Icelandic doings,history,and stories,subscribe to her blog.

This book is not the kind of book I enjoyed reading- but that's precisely the reason I think the author did a good important job writing this one.I read the whole book, getting a clue on how to prepare to a worst-case scenario seems probable every day.The information provided might be crucial one day. This book is a must-have!

I got this book out of my curiosity about what is the real meaning of death of money. So far i only understand that we should keep cash at home in the case of a serious emergency, so we may able to buy or get something if we can't go to the bank right away. This book share about how to survive and prosper in the coming economic collapse, awesome information.

This book was like that college course you took that you enjoyed thoroughly and learned a ton.
