Like many writers, I have a shelf of writing reference guides: thesauruses, dictionaries, style guides, and more. But I never had a book like Naughty Words for Nice Writers. Cara Bristol does a fabulous job suggesting alternate words to replace a variety of awkward standards, plus she offers some helpful writing tips in a concise, easy to understand way. I remembered why I do some of the things I do, and was reminded about best practices I've lost along the way.I highly recommend this book to new writers as well as seasoned professionals. It's on my shelf right now, but I think it's more likely to be by my keyboard more often.

Bristol broaches a topic not covered by most writers - naughty words! While she includes lists and lists (which is helpful for those who write love / sex scenes, she does it with class, humor, and sincerity. She covers the typical words most writers are looking to expand on without sounding corny but she also covers other topics like spanking and BDSM. The lists are easy to read and refer to. They are organized in a logical way. One topic leads naturally into another. This was a quick read but more than that, it is a great reference book for any author writing love scenes to have sitting next to their writing space.

This book has some GREAT info on writing romance and erotica in general, and BDSM stuff specifically. It also has some good terms on offer, but the content is organized strangely/vaguely, and I found myself having to go through page by page to find what I need, instead of just being able to look it up in the index. Slows me down too much when writing!

Excellent resource and a must have for any aspiring writer of romance. I had looked for many, many, many books that would help me with different words for different 'parts' and had been disappointed with the offerings until I ran into this little gem. I adore it, it not only gives the lists for different wording and phrasing of 'parts' and 'actions', it gives advice on what to avoid and why. It also gives tips on writing that are invaluable. I cannot recommend highly enough!

I love this little book! There are a few romance novel tip books that have been valued resources in the past and this one has moved right into that category. The tips to avoid has already helped me weed out extraneous verbiage and helped to tighten my current WIP. Phrases for those body parts we all know and love can become a problem on occasion and it helps to have a reference with more suggestions to draw from. If you are a romance writer on the spicier end of the spectrum you have to get this book. (If only for the spanking chapter alone!)Excellent resource!

Patricia Bjaaland Welch, MA, is a former lecturer in Chinese philosophy and art at Boston University and has been a docent for over two decades in prominent museums in Boston, Bangkok, and Singapore. She has written several in-house training manuals for docents and is passionate about bringing people into museums and helping them to appreciate what they are seeing. I have been researching Korean Art symbolism for many years and have acquired many books that interpret symbolism in paintings. I thought I had found the best sources of motif interpretation that a researcher could find...UNTIL:I found this book on Amazon while looking for something else. But, when I read the summary of the book I decided to buy it an add it to my collection.But, when I got it and read it I was absolutely amazed as to the depth and detail about Chinese symbolism that was contained in this book. For certain I can discard all my other books and use this single book to do any research on symbolism that I might want to indulge. C.A.S. Williams' book is good, but this book is GREAT!!!The photos and illustrations are great and very informative. The manner in which the motifs and symbolism are explained is more detailed that I have found anywhere else.This is the complete book and is now my main reference book for understanding motifs and symbolism in Oriental Art!This is a MUST HAVE for students and researchers of Asian Art!!!!!!!!!I would recommend it be available, maybe even required, for every class of Asian Art, and especially Chinese Art. Every school and library should have this book so that amateurs and professional alike will obtain the ultimate understanding of what is represented in the Art Works they might be viewing/studying. I have found Chinese art to be very difficult to understand without a basic knowledge about the symbolism/motifs represented in the art.Chinese Art is never what it appears at first glance, and this book will allow every connoisseur to better understand Asian Art!!Kudos to the Author!!!

I first encountered this book while visiting my mother-in-law (a voracious reader and traveler); she had just brought it home from the public library. Her passion is art; mine is China. Leafing through the book's pages, casually at first, the "wow!" in me grew as I saw images, both ancient and contemporary, classical and Maoist, natural and conceptual -- with a paragraph, or a little more, pointing out each image's key features. (Pineapples, being yellow, are associated with gold and rich abundance; while the many-seeded pomegranate hints at fecundity.) What's more, language lovers will find that this volume might just as accurately have been titled: "Chinese Language: A Guide to its Motifs and Verbal Imagery." The text is peppered with accompanying Chinese vocabulary (using both Pinyin and the "Simplified" characters), amply fortified with discussions of word play, and an image's reflections across dialects. Click a random page in Amazon's "Look Inside" feature for this book--you'll see what I mean.After leaving my in-laws', I came home straightaway, powered up my computer, and ordered this book online! What a gem!

Ed cheated death on so many occasions and ultimately lives to fight another day.First he must survive the Japanese onslaught of multiple bombings and strafing's at Clark AB, Republic of the Philippines. Once accomplishing that, he eventually finds himself fighting with US Army Infantry troops on the southern peninsula of Luzon, (Bataan). On April 9, 1941 the Americans raise the white flag, capitulating the peninsula to the Japanese. Ed refuses to surrender and escapes by hitching a ride on a not-so seaworthy boat to Corregidor Island. One month later Corregidor falls to the Japanese and he along with 11,000 allies are taken prisoner. During a work detail Lt Whitcomb, and a USMC comrade, Bill Harris, sneak out of their POW campsite, and in the middle of the night, swim the strong currents of Manila Bay for 8 hours, finding themselves back on Bataan. Well from these adventures to what happens next is just downright fantastical. From commandeering sailboats provided by friendly locals, to ultimately being betrayed by some not-so friendly Filipinos. He and two of his civilian, (American), mining companions are taken prisoner by the Japanese, thus reverting back to POW status. He convinces his captors that he too is a civilian miner. Due to his "civilian status" he is ultimately moved from the staging/interrogation area at Fort Santiago prison camp, (Manila), to other internment centers; Santo Thomas University, Manila, and the last internment center was in Chapei, China. After one year in China, he and several hundred other prisoners are traded for hundreds of American-Japanese civilians for repatriation. So once back in the States, Ed gets re-certified for navigation duty and eventually finds himself back in the fight, flying bombing missions from the Philippines.This was an exceptional book on so many levels, and just down right fun to read. I highly recommend this suspenseful book for the masses. It will have you on the edge of your seat! Seriously, read this book, you'll be glad you did!

This was an incredible story of a B-17 navigator stationed in the Philippines in December of 1941. He was at Clark Field in the Philippines, and he was there again when the war ended, and his amazing story of capture, escape, surrender, escape again, attempting to sail to China,attempting to sail to Australia, capture again, and his unlikely route back to the U.S. to eventually return to the Pacific for the last three months of the war is a great human interest and great history of the war story. I had always faulted McArthur for the loss of the air forces in the Philippines the day after Pearl Harbor, and this man tells his story of being there when the Japanese bombed it! A great read, well written, and what a story!

This rates high in my estimation . What an exciting book, of how this young officer trained before the war came and then found himself in the Philippines when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, as they wondered if this could be true, bombs started falling on Clark Field north of Manila, eventually they found themselves on Corregidor a small island jutting out in the Manila bay. He and a companion swim off the island, and then he was on the run all the way to China, where he finally made his way back to the states. Then got in on the end of the war. then when Korea came along very few years later, he was not of the Inchon reservoir as a Marine when he and his men were fighting their way out, was lost in a firefight. awesome reading.

This book kept my interest from beginning to end. I was 13 when Pearl Harbor was bombed and the swift rush to enlist by the man was palpable. Though some people complained about rationing, we had it easy compared to the people described in this book.The residents of the Philippines couldn't get any news about how the war was progressing and many, including many off the servicemen stationed there, didn't know who was in the lead as far as the war was concerned until almost the end of the war. The narration by the author, who was there, keeps one riveted to the very last chapter.

I'm giving this 4 stars for the story content without discounting one for less than polished writing style. It's a great story of how Whit survived and escaped he Bataan, to Corregidor island, only to be captured when Corregidor fell, and then escaped the Japanese,by swimming back to Bataan, only to be recaptured further south once again, pass as a civilian, and eventually be repatriated to the US on an exchange of civilian prisoners. I was interested to find that the Japanese didn't terribly mistreat Western civilians while the tide of war was in their favor.

written in an era where you could still say "Japs" and not feel guilty about say it, the book is a good history book for those of us who forgot how the entire Bataan, Corregidor part of the war happened. The book is made more interesting by knowing that the author went on to be Governor of Indiana and to sail around the world, alone, at an age that many people are in a nursing home. Whitcomb's anger at the US's negligence in letting it's troops be decimated and his own self doubts about doing everything he could do to resist, permeates the book. It is an enjoyable, educational story and I would recommend the book. The down side is the editing is horrible. It seems when the book was digitized, many mistakes were made, enough so that it was a little distracting.

It was an amazing story! It would make a great action/thriller movie. From the dark days of 1941 in the Philippines, from being captured, escaping, recaptured, sailing to China, returned to the USA, flying around the Mediterranean and Africa, and finally back in the Philippines in 1945. I found it hard to put down, you never knew what was about to happen. I would certainly recommend this book, you won't be disappointed.

"Nuclear Energy" by Raymond L. Murray now has a sixth edition available, and while I read and am reviewing the fifth edition, I encourage anyone who wants to read this generally fine book to obtain the latest edition. In this volume Murray covers a very broad swath of information, focusing on nuclear processes and civilian nuclear power, but also delving into international aspects of nuclear power, nuclear explosions and armaments, future uses of nuclear power, regulatory issues, and waste disposal. Each chapter is well formulated, and I especially appreciated the concise summaries at the end of chapters.I found the chapters on nuclear processes to be the best in the book, and particularly enjoyed chapter 12, "Heat Generation and Removal," and found his explanation of nucleate boiling, film boiling, and departure from nucleate boiling ratio" (DNBR, p. 151) to be the most comprehensible I have ever read in an introductory text. I read the book to enhance my understanding of commercial fission reactors mostly to grasp engineered safety systems in operational reactors. In that vein, some sections of the book are a bit esoteric, although still interesting. For instance, some of the discussion in the section 14.6, "Prospects For Fusion" (p.188) goes into such things as the compact stellarator, spherical torus, reversed field pinch, spheromak, floating multipole, and z-pinch concepts in the discussion of magnetic fusion focused on the tokamak mode. My critique isn't that the material is bad, but that most readers of the book are focused on much more basic information. The fusion discussion is by no means a waste overall though, and I particularly liked the inclusion of a quote from fusion pioneer Lyman Spitzer on p. 190 that justifies the entire research discipline: "A fifty percent probability of getting a power source that would last a billion years is worth a great deal of enthusiasm." Brilliant.While most of the book is very well written, I found isolated sections to be very confusing, particularly section 17.7, "Neutron Activation Analysis," which I re-read several times and still struggled with. Hopefully this has been fixed in the sixth edition, though thankfully these weaker areas are relatively rare. As an aside, some of the exercises require mathematical leaps most people will be unable to make unless the material is taught more in-depth in a classroom environment. This can prove frustrating.Chapter 22, "Radioactive Waste Disposal," is one of the most important in the book, and also a subject that has drastically changed since this edition was written, most recently with the decision of the Obama administration with the support of Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Senator Harry Reid of Nevada to terminate the Yucca Mountain facility with no plan whatsoever to provide an alternate facility. This latest government boondoggle puts politics over scientific validity, but that comes as no surprise, as Murray points out the failure of Jimmy Carter's equally naive political views on nuclear proliferation and reprocessing on p. 343: "Concern about international proliferation of nuclear weapons prompted President Carter in 1977 to issue a ban on reprocessing. It was believed that if the U.S. refrained from reprocessing, it would set an example to other countries. The action had no effect, since the U.S. had made no real sacrifice, having abundant uranium and coal reserves, but countries lacking resources saw full utilization of uranium in their best interests." Of course by eliminating the prospect of reprocessing, Carter committed the U.S. to a "once through" nuclear power system with much greater waste issues to deal with than would occur were reprocessing to be implemented.Chapter 23, "Laws, Regulations, and Organizations," is of key importance to understanding the industry, and I especially appreciated the information on Performance-Based regulation (pp. 367-368) in the discussion of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. I likewise found the information on the "Institute of Nuclear Power Operations" (INPO) on pp. 370-373 to be excellent. (For more information on INPO I refer readers to the excellent book "Hostages of Each Other" by Joseph Rees.) The country-by-country overview of nuclear power capabilities in chapter 25 is an excellent resource, but is now quite out of date; I'm sure the sixth edition will provide an excellent updated version of the data. Chapter 26, "Nuclear Explosions," tackles militarized nuclear systems, and is generally good, though there are some utopian visions expressed that have no place in a book of this nature, most notably in the summary on p. 435: "In addition to continued efforts to reduce the stockpile of armaments, to secure workable treaties, and utilize technology to provide protection, there is an urgent need to eliminate all the unfavorable conditions-social, economic, and cultural-that prompt conflict in the world." Yeah, that'll happen.Overall I like the book and while some of the material is a tad esoteric for presentation in an introductory book, the enormity of the subject is generally dealt with quite well by Mr. Murray, and I recommend the book for readers with a serious interest in the subject matter.

An excellent book. I am an amateur nuclear enthusiast and have found this book to answer many questions. I think it is a must for the library of anyone really interested in the fascinationg field of nuclear energy and reactors. Some of it is a bit on the "deep" side, but still worthwhile.

My son, for whom I purchased this book, says that it's an excellent introduction to Nuclear Energy in it's different applications. The only thing he would add to it to enable a 5-star rating would be a review of atoms, protons, electrons, etc. Apparently, with such a review, even I, whose background in those subjects spans more than 40 years in the past, would readily understand the book.

This edition was published in 2009. I owned an earlier (4th) edition. This edition has coverage of issues that the title might not lead one to expect, such as Energy Economics, Laws, Regulations and Organizations, and the Future. The book is not highly mathematical and is highly readable. Look at the Table of Contents. I certainly recommend this book to anyone interested in an overall picture of nuclear technology with enough math and equations thrown in to be valuable. Most chapters have good numerical problems (answers in back) and there is a very good listing of references and additional reading sources.

The 7th edition of Nuclear Energy effectively and efficiently covered the concepts and neccesary areas of interest for the understanding of radation across several disciplines. The use of definitions and mathematics with the additon of problem solving at different levels of sophistication raised the rating to 5 stars

The explanations are pretty good. However they are a bit lacking for some fundamental and difficult concepts such as constructing MO theory orbitals and how it is done. The first chapter is rather dry and easy to just skip, but should just be review from lower level chemistry courses. I will try to update this review as I follow the book through the class. Thankfully my professor is amazing.Edit: Further in the semester and decreasing the score from a 4 to a 3. The book barely touches on hard/soft acid/base chemistry which is a huge topic for predicting reactions. Some theoretical topics are covered in great detail, but are wholly useless for the level this book is written at. They explain lattices to great detail but lack sufficient explanation for all the ways Born-Haber cycles can be used. Equations aren't always presented well (not in their own paragraph) which makes reading difficult. Example problems aren't well explained. Basically, the book covers information very well, but it doesn't cover the information it needs to cover for a course well enough.

I have to mention that that the author, Atkins, also writes textbooks for physical chemistry. That partially explains why the content is taught in a linear fashion with mathematical formulas. It seems to give only brief explanations of certain topics, where the assigned problems, in the book, ask questions where you are required to use equations not even mentioned in the textbook. This textbook feels incomplete; there isn't even a mention of Slater's rule or using Vsper theory alongside MO theory. It is definitely lacking.

Great book, (I also found the pdf of it online). It really covers everything very nicely and it's very clearly laid out. I like how the layout helps break up the pages so that it's not like just looking at a block of dry text (inorganic and physical chem books tend to do that a lot - See Ira Levine, Physical Chemistry 6th).

This text reads like stereo directions. I had a miserable semester where I worked really hard and ended up with a B. If you must use this text for your class, you have my sympathy. My prof had to supplement with a lot of notes.

For me, the utility of a chemistry text is defined in simple terms. Does it help me complete the homework assignments? Does it explain things in a way that my professor does not? Does it stand alone, apart from the instruction of my professor?I took an Inorganic course to fill a deficiency and so I bought this book. I found it to be very disappointing. The explanations of key concepts (such as term symbols and crystal field theory) is lacking and the problems that the text works out seem esoteric and too terse for someone trying to connect the dots.I like the Tarr and Mieslier text better.

Needed for class. The actual information in the book is brief and not as detailed as I would have liked. It does however cover a wide variety of topics.

Got this textbook for my Inorganic lab class. It's an alright book, but there are many errors and it seems like the authors ramble on in some places and don't explain things too well. It may be easier to use for people who have a better understanding of inorganic chemistry, but I found it kind of difficult to follow.

As a chemistry major, I hate this book. WAY too much jargon, extremely difficult to understand, very long passages in almost fine print (hurt my eyes). Very few figures to really explain chemistry (most chemistry is visual) and this book does a horrible job explaining what you are looking at, sometimes it doesn't even explain it. Better off using google or a different book.At least the book comes in great condition. (because why even open this piece of garbage)
