Funny thing: at first I did not like this book, finding Aaron Brown's drug addiction not that appealing. But I kept reading and after 50 pages could not put it down. Here is a man who battled his own demons for years, but yet managed to train himself to become a Navy SEAL which only around .01 percent of males could do. And yet he did it despite overcoming all manner of serious injuries: broken arms, legs, fingers, even losing an eye (an eye!) in a training accident and yet he managed to become a sniper despite these severe handicaps. And as anyone who has read either Chris Kyle or Brandon Webb, there is no more challenging calling in our armed forces that becoming a Navy SEAL sniper requiring not only unreal physical and mental stamina but also tremendous intellectual capacity as well. And Aaron Brown was one of those rare men-who also wore BatMan underwear into battle! How cool is that? He was also a devoted father to his children and a great husband to his wife, who is also one of the heroines of our timeHe died doing what he most loved-saving his brother soldiers-and America is the luckier for having troopers such as Aaron Brown in their midst. Get this book and read it!

This book is inspiring and really made me feel proud to be an American, and a U.S. Navy Sailor.Adam’s story of triumph and patriotism is unmatched. I am so thankful that we have men and women that answer the call to protect our country. And few are as special as Adam Brown.Considering Adam’s family, especially his wife and children, I want to say that they serve as well. I have spent a lot of time away from my wife and kids as a result of my service. Although, I’m never in harms way like a SEAL. But it’s easy to forget those who are left at home. This book helped show the importance of the family that a service member leaves at home. That was, surprisingly, one of my favorite things about this book - that it highlights the struggles of a mother and her children while daddy is away fighting for their freedom. It’s beautiful and tragic at the same time.Adam’s faith renewed my own. I have been a Christian for many years, but my duties as a Sailor have consumed so much of me that I get off track. This book helped show me that a man can serve both the country and the Lord.Today, I will kiss my wife a little longer. I will hug my kids a little tighter. And I will pray a little deeper. All because of one man who showed me, in his sacrifice, that I can play my role for America and be a family man that loves Jesus, at the same time.Great book. Great man. I read Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World yesterday. It was the day that the US House of Representatives failed to pass the big financial bail-out bill, the stock market tumbled, the 2008 election campaign season was in full roar, my car suddenly needed major repairs, and my seasonal allergies were again in evidence.It's not a perfect book, but I am so glad I read it. It was a welcome and refreshing change of subject from the bad, scary and tiresome things going on at home and around the world.I agree with another reviewer that it might have been a better, and shorter, book if focused more completely on Dewey the cat and the town of Spencer, with less of the author's personal story. But taken as it stands, it's still a heartwarming tale of a human-animal bond.There are parallels between the story and current events. The town of Spencer, Iowa, was going through tough economic times when that tiny kitten was dumped into the public library's book return slot on the coldest night of the winter, and our nation is in a serious economic mess now with scary forecasts of what's to come. A friendly little cat with a great sense of how to act with people didn't turn the town's economy around, but by doing his thing day in and day out he truly brightened so many lives that he did make things better in his little corner of the world. (No, I don't think there's a feline-based cure for our national economic system, but one can dream...)Not a perfect book, but at the end I was quite touched by the story of an extraordinary cat, a pretty special head librarian, and an above average small American town, who shared something we all need more of: respect, tolerance, fun, and love.

I wasn’t careful when I was ordering this book and thought I was getting the adult version of this book. I was surprised when I opened up my package and it was the children’s version. I checked my order and sure enough it was me that made the mistake! Regardless, I gave the book a try, since I am a cat lover and didn’t mind having a quick and easy read.This was a really sweet story. I loved reading about how Dewey made his life at the library. In addition to being a cat lover, I also work in a library. It made me wish for a library cat of my own! I enjoyed all the little anecdotes and loved the photos. I admit I teared up in a few spots. I certainly enjoyed the book, and will probably pass it on to my nieces. Just make sure you’re ordering the right version!

Vicki once again writes a great and compelling book, I will not spoil this for anyone but you must read all the way to the end, which can be hard for cat lovers. Dewey's life as told by her was mesmerizing as well as her insights into a small town and it's library and how a library works and her dreams and how she made them real for it.In this second book we get additional accounts of different cats and people along with a few more things about Dewey, especially after his death, it's not always feel-good and has some sorrow, so be prepared for that but it's worth all that to get to the end.

A very popular, cute, heartwarming story of love & compassion about a kitten who was found abandoned in the library Return Box overnight, but was rescued, nursed back to health & took up residence in the local library as its new home. This particular version is written on a child’s level & easy to read. My 9 yr old granddaughter LOVES this book & we have always checked it out of our library whenever she comes to visit if it is available at the time but when I saw this great deal on Amazon, I couldn’t help but grab it. I bought a “used” copy of the book for the best price but it is in very excellent condition. This particular version has become a “hard to find” book at a reasonable price but Amazon had the source. Now my granddaughter has her own copy to read when she is visiting & someday it will be hers to keep ...& be one of her memories of good times at Grandad & Nana’s house.

If you've ever owned a cat, you will just eat up every word, every adventure, every cuddle in this book. If you "dont know cats" this will take you into their world; it will show you the depth of their intelligence and capacity to love and care. The tale of the small almost-frozen cat being rescued by the library staff and becoming a fixture in the museum is well told. You can just see the cat chasing things, or being chased, and how it interacts with people -- particularly with grumps and physically disabled. The few sections about the health of the author (librarian) did not interest me, and I could have done without. I could re-read this book every few years and still giggle, swoon, or cry. It must be one of the top "gift books" published, as you will want to share it, and bring joy to others' lives.

Hamilton even details the bonus schedule he paid to his doping doctors for each major victory. Although I've read previous books on the topic, I was still surprised by the intensity of doping activities outlined here. It's the difference between having the story told by "outsiders" (investigators, journalists, team assistants) vs. "insiders" (someone like Hamilton who is finally willing to tell the story).- Third, Hamilton's own personal story is believable. He helps explain why bike racers decide to dope, why lying about it becomes so central to their day to day lives, and what it takes to turn the corner and start telling the truth. The co-author's key challenge in this book is to make the reader accept the story of someone who lied for so long, and inevitably we have to wonder, "He lied then, is he telling the truth now?" The context provided here allows the reader to make that leap.Two other individuals are worth mentioning. The first is David Walsh, the London Times journalist who wrote, From Lance to Landis: Inside the American Doping Controversy at the Tour de France, which outlined way back in 2007 what was happening inside pro racing during the "Lance Armstrong era." None of the recent doping scandals has been a real surprise to anyone who read Walsh's book. "The Secret Race" has a lot more detail, since it's told by a true insider, but without David Walsh, Paul Kimmage and a few others continuing to tell this story the facts likely would have never come out (One thing that's clear from "The Secret Race" is that the sport's governing body, the UCI, was never going to blow the whistle on itself).[Nov. 2012 update: David Walsh's stories that laid out the original allegations against Lance Armstrong have just been released in a Kindle edition, Lanced: The shaming of Lance Armstrong, and coming soon is his new e-book, Seven Deadly Sins ]The second person to mention is Andy Hampsten, another American cycling hero whose 1988 ride in the Tour of Italy is still legendary. Hampsten was competing at the top level of international cycling before the EPO era but then found himself out-muscled by back-of-the-pack competitors who suddenly transformed themselves, turbocharged by EPO and blood transfusions. For anyone who thinks that it's OK to excuse continuing coverups because "it was a level playing field; they all doped," it's worth reading Andy Hampsten's quotes:"In the mid eighties, when I came up, riders were doping but it was still possible to compete with them...bottom line, a clean rider could compete in the big three-week races. EPO changed everything...all of a sudden whole teams were ragingly fast, all of a sudden I was struggling to make time limits. By 1994, I'd be on climbs, working as hard as I've ever worked, producing exactly the same power, at the same weight, and right alongside me would be these big-assed guys, and they'd be chatting like were were on the flats! It was completely crazy. As the 1996 season went by...everybody knew what was up, everybody was talking about EPO, everybody could see the writing on the wall."Hampsten retired from pro bike racing at that time. Other racers made a different decision, and signed up for in-depth doping regimes; their story is told here. To believe that anyone raced clean and then won the Tour de France 7 times in a row at the height of the doping era seems to defy reality. To use a term repeated often in "The Secret Race," it would have to be "extraterrestrial."

Normally I don't write these reviews, but this was such a compelling read in light of the events that have been unfolding. Tyler Hamilton, who I admired for his ability to push through pain. Tyler Hamilton, who I lost every ounce of respect for after he lied about doping and then admitted to it. Tyler Hamilton, who I started to see not as an athlete who cheated, but as a human being who I eventually began to understand and sympathize, and a newfound sympathy for his plight and struggle. Here is a man who I no longer see as a "bad person", but someone who came to a series of life changing decisions and forks in the path, and were I to be put in his shoes, I would probably have done exactly the same things. Looking back at the many years of cycling, I realized I blindly refused to believe that the greatest hero in sports would ever guilty of a crime, and that the world was simply trying to bring him down for his successes, and I, like many others, grouped the LeMonde, Le Mondes, Ballasters, and the Andreaus as bitter people trying to destroy a great champion. This book reveals so much detail to a point where you kick yourself for being so oblivious and ignorant of the existence of such a massive, organized underworld. This book will be a game changer.

Fabulous book. I read it in just over one day. Smooth and easy read with a ton of information and an abundance of inspiration.Tyler Hamilton was a professional cyclist, who rode side by side with Lance Armstrong until he became Armstrong's opponent (I'll let you guess why that happened). This book is full of incredible truths about Hamilton's doping and his struggles with the shame and dishonesty it came with. In most of the book Tyler points the finger at his own mistakes and wrong doings, which was both frustrating and touching. Yes, there is plenty of finger pointing at Lance, too, and it's not pretty (it definitely confirmed my feelings about Armstrong's character). One might think Tyler is calling out Armstrong in a vindictive way, but that's not the case at all, (plus there are so many testimonials from other riders that confirm Tyler's claims).This book has guts and fire, it's real and deeply honest. I learned a lot about the science of doping and, while I don't agree with it at all, I now understand the why of it all. The truth is sad, indeed. I look at all sports differently now, that's for certain.I admire Tyler for his honesty, which came at a huge cost. HUGE! But the inspiration this book holds, the insight to honesty and how it literally does set you free, is remarkable. It's easy to tell the truth when you don't have much to lose, but it's much harder to tell the truth when you have everything to lose. In the end it may have cost Tyler his career and an Olympic gold medal, but it gave him the important things that hold greater value. Very few books bring me to tears, but this one did, many times.There are many wonderful quotes in the book that stayed with me but this one stands out...."I know that old saying that when God closes a door He opens a window. I think that saying is really talking about the resilience of truth. I’ve come to learn that truth is a living thing. It has a force inside it, an inner springiness. The truth can’t be denied or locked away, because when that happens, the pressure builds. When a door gets closed, the truth seeks a window, and blows the glass clean out. "I highly recommend this book.....it will open your eyes to the truth about athletes who dope and why. But most of all, it will touch your heart.

Like many writers, I have a shelf of writing reference guides: thesauruses, dictionaries, style guides, and more. But I never had a book like Naughty Words for Nice Writers. Cara Bristol does a fabulous job suggesting alternate words to replace a variety of awkward standards, plus she offers some helpful writing tips in a concise, easy to understand way. I remembered why I do some of the things I do, and was reminded about best practices I've lost along the way.I highly recommend this book to new writers as well as seasoned professionals. It's on my shelf right now, but I think it's more likely to be by my keyboard more often.

Bristol broaches a topic not covered by most writers - naughty words! While she includes lists and lists (which is helpful for those who write love / sex scenes, she does it with class, humor, and sincerity. She covers the typical words most writers are looking to expand on without sounding corny but she also covers other topics like spanking and BDSM. The lists are easy to read and refer to. They are organized in a logical way. One topic leads naturally into another. This was a quick read but more than that, it is a great reference book for any author writing love scenes to have sitting next to their writing space.

This book has some GREAT info on writing romance and erotica in general, and BDSM stuff specifically. It also has some good terms on offer, but the content is organized strangely/vaguely, and I found myself having to go through page by page to find what I need, instead of just being able to look it up in the index. Slows me down too much when writing!

Excellent resource and a must have for any aspiring writer of romance. I had looked for many, many, many books that would help me with different words for different 'parts' and had been disappointed with the offerings until I ran into this little gem. I adore it, it not only gives the lists for different wording and phrasing of 'parts' and 'actions', it gives advice on what to avoid and why. It also gives tips on writing that are invaluable. I cannot recommend highly enough!

I love this little book! There are a few romance novel tip books that have been valued resources in the past and this one has moved right into that category. The tips to avoid has already helped me weed out extraneous verbiage and helped to tighten my current WIP. Phrases for those body parts we all know and love can become a problem on occasion and it helps to have a reference with more suggestions to draw from. If you are a romance writer on the spicier end of the spectrum you have to get this book. (If only for the spanking chapter alone!)Excellent resource!

Patricia Bjaaland Welch, MA, is a former lecturer in Chinese philosophy and art at Boston University and has been a docent for over two decades in prominent museums in Boston, Bangkok, and Singapore. She has written several in-house training manuals for docents and is passionate about bringing people into museums and helping them to appreciate what they are seeing. I have been researching Korean Art symbolism for many years and have acquired many books that interpret symbolism in paintings. I thought I had found the best sources of motif interpretation that a researcher could find...UNTIL:I found this book on Amazon while looking for something else. But, when I read the summary of the book I decided to buy it an add it to my collection.But, when I got it and read it I was absolutely amazed as to the depth and detail about Chinese symbolism that was contained in this book. For certain I can discard all my other books and use this single book to do any research on symbolism that I might want to indulge. C.A.S. Williams' book is good, but this book is GREAT!!!The photos and illustrations are great and very informative. The manner in which the motifs and symbolism are explained is more detailed that I have found anywhere else.This is the complete book and is now my main reference book for understanding motifs and symbolism in Oriental Art!This is a MUST HAVE for students and researchers of Asian Art!!!!!!!!!I would recommend it be available, maybe even required, for every class of Asian Art, and especially Chinese Art. Every school and library should have this book so that amateurs and professional alike will obtain the ultimate understanding of what is represented in the Art Works they might be viewing/studying. I have found Chinese art to be very difficult to understand without a basic knowledge about the symbolism/motifs represented in the art.Chinese Art is never what it appears at first glance, and this book will allow every connoisseur to better understand Asian Art!!Kudos to the Author!!!

I first encountered this book while visiting my mother-in-law (a voracious reader and traveler); she had just brought it home from the public library. Her passion is art; mine is China. Leafing through the book's pages, casually at first, the "wow!" in me grew as I saw images, both ancient and contemporary, classical and Maoist, natural and conceptual -- with a paragraph, or a little more, pointing out each image's key features. (Pineapples, being yellow, are associated with gold and rich abundance; while the many-seeded pomegranate hints at fecundity.) What's more, language lovers will find that this volume might just as accurately have been titled: "Chinese Language: A Guide to its Motifs and Verbal Imagery." The text is peppered with accompanying Chinese vocabulary (using both Pinyin and the "Simplified" characters), amply fortified with discussions of word play, and an image's reflections across dialects. Click a random page in Amazon's "Look Inside" feature for this book--you'll see what I mean.After leaving my in-laws', I came home straightaway, powered up my computer, and ordered this book online! What a gem!

The author brings an immense academic understanding to her subject and writes clearly, concisely, eloquently; although the book can be read by any enthusiast for things Chinese it will undoubtedly find a place on the scholar's reference bookshelf as well.CHINESE ART tackles a complicated philosophical theme - the perception of a civilization through its imagery and designs - and succeeds wonderfully. A pleasure to read and to own, a remarkable achievement, and probably definitive. Five stars.

Gripping autobiographical intrigue on the life of an American WWII B-17 Navigator, Lt Edgar Whitcomb. The suspense and quick flowing narrative was a real pleasure to read. Ed cheated death on so many occasions and ultimately lives to fight another day.First he must survive the Japanese onslaught of multiple bombings and strafing's at Clark AB, Republic of the Philippines. Once accomplishing that, he eventually finds himself fighting with US Army Infantry troops on the southern peninsula of Luzon, (Bataan). On April 9, 1941 the Americans raise the white flag, capitulating the peninsula to the Japanese. Ed refuses to surrender and escapes by hitching a ride on a not-so seaworthy boat to Corregidor Island. One month later Corregidor falls to the Japanese and he along with 11,000 allies are taken prisoner. During a work detail Lt Whitcomb, and a USMC comrade, Bill Harris, sneak out of their POW campsite, and in the middle of the night, swim the strong currents of Manila Bay for 8 hours, finding themselves back on Bataan. Well from these adventures to what happens next is just downright fantastical. From commandeering sailboats provided by friendly locals, to ultimately being betrayed by some not-so friendly Filipinos. He and two of his civilian, (American), mining companions are taken prisoner by the Japanese, thus reverting back to POW status. He convinces his captors that he too is a civilian miner. Due to his "civilian status" he is ultimately moved from the staging/interrogation area at Fort Santiago prison camp, (Manila), to other internment centers; Santo Thomas University, Manila, and the last internment center was in Chapei, China. After one year in China, he and several hundred other prisoners are traded for hundreds of American-Japanese civilians for repatriation. So once back in the States, Ed gets re-certified for navigation duty and eventually finds himself back in the fight, flying bombing missions from the Philippines.This was an exceptional book on so many levels, and just down right fun to read. I highly recommend this suspenseful book for the masses. It will have you on the edge of your seat! Seriously, read this book, you'll be glad you did!

This was an incredible story of a B-17 navigator stationed in the Philippines in December of 1941. He was at Clark Field in the Philippines, and he was there again when the war ended, and his amazing story of capture, escape, surrender, escape again, attempting to sail to China,attempting to sail to Australia, capture again, and his unlikely route back to the U.S. to eventually return to the Pacific for the last three months of the war is a great human interest and great history of the war story. I had always faulted McArthur for the loss of the air forces in the Philippines the day after Pearl Harbor, and this man tells his story of being there when the Japanese bombed it! A great read, well written, and what a story!

This rates high in my estimation . What an exciting book, of how this young officer trained before the war came and then found himself in the Philippines when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, as they wondered if this could be true, bombs started falling on Clark Field north of Manila, eventually they found themselves on Corregidor a small island jutting out in the Manila bay. He and a companion swim off the island, and then he was on the run all the way to China, where he finally made his way back to the states. Then got in on the end of the war. then when Korea came along very few years later, he was not of the Inchon reservoir as a Marine when he and his men were fighting their way out, was lost in a firefight. awesome reading.

This book kept my interest from beginning to end. I was 13 when Pearl Harbor was bombed and the swift rush to enlist by the man was palpable. Though some people complained about rationing, we had it easy compared to the people described in this book.The residents of the Philippines couldn't get any news about how the war was progressing and many, including many off the servicemen stationed there, didn't know who was in the lead as far as the war was concerned until almost the end of the war. The narration by the author, who was there, keeps one riveted to the very last chapter.

I'm giving this 4 stars for the story content without discounting one for less than polished writing style. It's a great story of how Whit survived and escaped he Bataan, to Corregidor island, only to be captured when Corregidor fell, and then escaped the Japanese,by swimming back to Bataan, only to be recaptured further south once again, pass as a civilian, and eventually be repatriated to the US on an exchange of civilian prisoners. I was interested to find that the Japanese didn't terribly mistreat Western civilians while the tide of war was in their favor.

written in an era where you could still say "Japs" and not feel guilty about say it, the book is a good history book for those of us who forgot how the entire Bataan, Corregidor part of the war happened. The book is made more interesting by knowing that the author went on to be Governor of Indiana and to sail around the world, alone, at an age that many people are in a nursing home. Whitcomb's anger at the US's negligence in letting it's troops be decimated and his own self doubts about doing everything he could do to resist, permeates the book. It is an enjoyable, educational story and I would recommend the book. The down side is the editing is horrible. It seems when the book was digitized, many mistakes were made, enough so that it was a little distracting.

It was an amazing story! It would make a great action/thriller movie. From the dark days of 1941 in the Philippines, from being captured, escaping, recaptured, sailing to China, returned to the USA, flying around the Mediterranean and Africa, and finally back in the Philippines in 1945. I found it hard to put down, you never knew what was about to happen. I would certainly recommend this book, you won't be disappointed.
