So instead of decreasing the bad comments in a child I read the book to, I see him using some the actual distasteful comments from the book in his own language when he is frustrated. So he did not learn the intended lesson. I think maybe it should have been written in the "positive," and show what happens when you use friendly comments rather than some of the bad thoughts floating around in your head.

I bought this for my 4 year old after he made a string of insensitive comments to strangers. However, this book would do WAY more harm than good! It shows a boy saying honest but mean things to people, and I just know it would give my son a whole new treasure trove of insults to draw from! And then the solution offered is SO convoluted and long-winded, for a child especially, but even for me!Not sure if I should just throw it away...can't imagine this ever coming in handy.

Disappointed in this book as I am a HUGE Julia Cook fan and have many, many of her books for my kids. The switching between scenarios is very confusing- I had trouble as an adult following the book. Also I think using trees as opposed to people makes it hard for the kids to relate. Sorry, I had to hold onto this book and not let my 8 year old read. It would bring up more questions than help. Sorry!! Julia’s other books are great!!

I think the story itself is good, but three pages didn't come through correctly and I can't read them at all. I can't even guess at what they say because the words and letters are all jumbled up. I'm very disappointed that I paid almost $10.00 for this digital copy and I can't even guess at what the three pages say. I had accidentally clicked on the digital copy instead of buying the regular copy and then couldn't reverse it. I clicked everywhere to try to figure it out because I didn't want a digital copy in the first place. I wish there was a way to get my money back!

Although I bought this for our children, this book also speaks to me in a deeply comforting way. The story is exquisitely nuanced and holds feelings so tenderly. It describes loss with a metaphor that is not threatening or too intense for young children, yet direct enough to be healing.It approaches a loss with clarity while also not obscuring the possibility of other losses in life. Yet the author soothes those fears with the gentle rhythms of the story. I found myself quietly choking up as I read it. The beauty and hope that came through held so many layers of meaning for me. I really appreciate the perspective that it gives our children (even on pet loss,) but I also appreciate the solace it offers me for my own losses.This is a remarkable book and I wish that all parents could have this for their children.

Having a child who has "filter problems" I thought this would be great for her. Absolutely not! She needs to work on thinking kind thoughts where it all begins, not bashing people in her mind. This might be one of the worst Julia Cook books I have ever read. Too bad I missed the return window on this book because I refuse to keep it in my house.

I teach 2nd grade and my students ABSOLUTELY LOVE this book!!!! It has reminded them how to work on their social filter, and we have re-read a few more times thru out the school year (not my choice ...but the students have requested to hear the read aloud once more). Definitely a great book to have and many of my cohorts have borrowed it from me as well!

I love this book. I am an elementary school counselor and I use it with kids to show them what is appropriate to say and what we should keep in our thinking bubble. After I read this book we play a game to go along with it. I have the kids be social filters and decide which phrases say in the thinking bubble and which go in the talking bubble.

Without the publication of this fascinating account of one man's arduous journey across a continent and through a forgotten country, the world would be worse off. The author weaves together historical accounts of the few who preceded him: Henry Stanley ("Dr. Livingstone, I presume."), Robert Conrad (Heart of Darkness), Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene, and Barbara Kingsolver (The Poisonwood Bible). This makes the book much more than just a travel report but also a bibliography as wide and as deep as the mighty Congo River.

This was a gripping story of a dangerous journey through almost unbelievably primitive conditions. Much of what he related about his encounters was almost unbelievable to read about in the 21st C. I've traveled to third world and developing world, and have seen the incongruity of people on oxcarts with cell-phones etc. as they progress unevenly--but progress they do! But there is none of that on his journey. No sign of the 21st C, and almost none of the 20th C remaining in the area he traveled through. It broke my heart to realize how the world has ignored and forgotten the suffering DRC people. Mr. Butcher is a very interesting writer, and I appreciated the regional history as well as the story of his own tribulations and perseverance (although at times I thought he was just plain crazy to continue!). I would have given this book a "5 star" but the end of the book just petered out, so the end was a bit of a disappointment. Nonetheless, highly recommended!

I just finished reading both this and Jeffrey Tayler's Facing the Congo: A Modern-Day Journey into the Heart of Darkness, which describes a similar journey. The two books are quite different in their approaches to the material, but they lend themselves to comparison, and on the whole, this book, Blood River, comes out ahead.The premise of this work is simple. The author, at the time the Africa corespondent for the Daily Telegraph, decides to retrace the journey of the most famous Daily Telegraph correspondent of a previous era: Henry Morton Stanley. He prepares for this trip for years, reading extensively about Stanley, the Congo, and Africa in general before starting his remarkable trip. After first flying to the shores of Lake Tanganyika, he the follows, using mostly modern conveyances, the route pioneered over a century before by Stanley. Throughout he compares his experiences with those of the prior explorer, and with the experiences of only a few decades ago, at the time of the Belgian colony. I was amazed to learn how developed the Congo had been prior to its independence. A modern joke, which does not feature in this book, but which applies completely goes as follows: a child asks his grandparent "what did you use for light before candles were invented?" and the grandparent replies "Electricity." The constant refrain of this book is the elderly, 70+ year old crowd, who remember clean water, good roads, good hospitals, the rule of law, and electric light, while their grandchildren work as subsistence farmers or mercenaries.Butcher writes as a journalist, and it shows. His ability to bring even a savage and dangerous "undeveloping" country to vivid, engrossing light is superb. His research before the trip shows as well, in his asides about flora, fauna, and the monuments he discovers. His point in making the trip was a deeper understanding of the country, and this is where the starkest contrast is seen between his work and Tayler's. Tayler states at the opening of his book that the journey was one of self discovery, and that book is much more inward focused and solipsistic. It is surprising then, that I feel the reader gets a better picture of Butcher than of Tayler, as we see his interest in, and concern for, the people he encounters. His closing paragraphs add a note of hope to an otherwise bleak look at the "broken heart of Africa". Which is a wonderfully coined phrase, by the way.The book is written in British English, with an occasional word I had to look up as an American reader. (I had never heard the term "tatty" before reading this). Occasionally he repeats himself, with some key phrases repeated more than once. Butcher describes Mobutu's "singlehanded" prevention of Congo's success on at least three occasions, using very similar wording. But these are relatively minor quibbles with an otherwise excellent work.Highly recommended.

Another Western journalist's account of his travels through a war-torn African country, this time, the Congo. For anyone who read and enjoyed King Leopold's Ghost, this book can almost serve as a sort of sequel. In it, Tim Butcher attempts to retrace Henry Morton Stanley's portentous journey through the Congo over a century before. A friend of the author ironically points out, it's probably more dangerous to trek across the Congolese bush now than it was in Stanley's day.So, I admit the book's premise may be a little bit gimmicky, but Tim Butcher's voice more than makes up for it. He's a great writer and a genuinely likable person. (For those of you who have watched the show Survivor Man, imagine a Les Stroud who reads.) I found him to be sincere and direct - equal parts compassionate and honest. And despite his incredible hubris in undertaking this mission, he's surprisingly gentle-spirited and not at all pretentious.And just when I would begin to categorize him as a sort of straight-forward, no-frills writer, he would sideswipe me with a beautifully written description of something or someone he found compelling in the Congo, like a rusted piece of Belgian railroad track overtaken by the bush, or the frenetic Congolese priest lamenting the absence of law and order, or the man who was willing to give his four-year-old child to a complete stranger to save him from the Congo. I definitely enjoyed this book enough to pick up his next one right away.

Part history, part travel book, part social commentary, this is a fascinating and often disturbing look at the Congo and the author's observations as he attempts to retrace the journey of explorer Henry Stanley in the late 19th century through the most rugged and hostile terrain imaginable. Fantastically written and full of keen observations, this is a wonderful account of a country that has been brutalized and exploited, one that seems to have been left behind by the modern world.

The book is like a time capsule of photos.. Look at the people, their clothes, the constructions, the buildings, the stores, their signs, the cars, the streets.. It will take you back in time and you'll feel immersed in that time.The low rating isn't for the content, the content is fabulous.. The rating is for the production quality of the book. Here are my suggestion to the publisher: 1) Avoid converting black & white to sepia. 2) Review the tone banding; photos look good digitally but were not printing as good.

As many reviewers have pointed out, this book is indeed a revelation. This woman was an extraordinary photographer. The printing is fine, in spite of what some have said - maybe the book had a bad print run - but I'm surprised that all the photos were sepia-toned. Nothing in the text says anything about her wanting them this way, or having printed with sepia, and it looks a bit artificial. The cover is in true black and white; I think the rest of the photos should be.

This is a wonderful look into early urban American life, sans agenda, through the skillful and creative eyes of Vivian Maier.The print quality is truly exceptional... among the best I've seen in any photo book. The photos themselves are all outstanding. Her framing, compositions, and eye for light are remarkable to me.I am so glad that John Maloof stumbled on Ms. Maier's work and took the time & effort to present it so beautifully. Highly recommend this title for her fans.

I devoured this book, and not in a thoughtless, quick-read sort of way. In a "lost-in-the-photo-for-long-minutes" sort of way. The eye Maier had was, for me, one of the most pristine of any street photographer I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. Of all the photography books I've read (and I'm counting a significant number here), this one is my #1, right behind "50 Portraits" by Gregory Heisler. If you are wavering on buying it, do yourself a favor. If you're at all into street photography, oh my goodness don't delay. Beautiful book, and I'm looking forward to diving into more of Maier's work as soon as possible. She is absolutely an inspiration to get out there and get shooting.

This is a fascinating book full of magnificent photographs taken by a woman who was never known while she was living. Her artistic and emotional talent is evident in every photograph. Her photos, many of them in New York City, evoke an era that we all recognize from movies and books but hers are the reality of a moment in time she captured so eloquently. The story of how her photographs were discovered and the years of dedication of the discoverer in bringing her story and photographs forward to the rest of us is intriguing and moving. It makes one wonder about other undiscovered talent hidden in attics and lost in estate sales.

This is an incredible book, I like how Maloof curated the images of Vivian Maier. However, the printed photographs looks like converted to sepia, contrary to the photos found online and on the documentary produced about Ms. Maier.

I am a professional photographer and even teach a class to older adults. This is an amazing story about a woman who NEVER showed her work to anyone. Vivian Maier's pictures are fabulous and I bet as people are continuing to do research about her that she has studied photography. She is not an amateur as some think. She was very private in her art and in her vision. Her mom's best friend was a portrait photographer and Vivian must have been influenced by this woman. Most photographer love to show their work to others so this is really interesting because of her desire to document her environment but not share what she saw with others until now when her work was discovered by 2 men and scanned and now shown and sold in galleries world wide. Her images go right to the heart of life- they bring you in and you can not help but really enjoy her graphic direct vision of life. Although Vivian was a nanny in NYC and Chicago I do believe she was an artist and a fabulous documentary photographer. If you love great photography you might consider this looking at this work and coming to your own opinions. I am thankful she was discovered.

What can I say? OK, how about this... I love her photography, and her story (watch the documentary - it's very well done)... and the truth is I simply wish she was still alive, or had been alive when here work was "discovered" - she deserved to know the joy she brought to people, and perhaps would have benefitted from receiving our love, or a connection... but maybe it was the lack of those things that made her special - I'm not going to get that deep... get the book - it's beautiful.

The BEST Halloween book ever done. Great ideas for house decorating, costumes, foods, and treats. Back in the 80's and 90's Martha Stewart shows were fabulous..better than what came later. This book is the same...highly recommend...can't beat the price!

Martha is a wonderfully creative artist, and here she has put together another Halloween jewel.

I love this book. Mainly for the pictures. The instructions seem a little vague but for the most part, you can probably figure things out from the pictures. The pictures do take up probably 75% of the book. I guess this might be better for people who are looking for nice pictures of the Halloween season.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and this book has some great ideas for crafts, costumes and food. One of the best halloween inspired snacks was for ladies fingers and men's toes, I brought these to a Halloween party and they were a big hit.The crafts and recipes in this book are fairly easy to make with planning. Don't try to pull anything off at the last minute. But with some planning and the right tools/ingredients you can achieve a really beautiful finished product.

this is a typical martha stewart book. the ideas are good but as always she uses her style and we all know it will cost alot and you try to impress everyone. got this for the wife to get ideas for halloween. great for ideas though

Halloween is not a big deal here in Australia, so I was looking for a inspirational book with plenty of how-tos and ideas... I bought this book after combing the Martha Stewart website, expecting more of the same great stuff. I was a little disappointed when it arrived. Still a good book, but I'd recommend going though the website first - a lot of the stuff in this book is contained there anyway. The book has a very appealing look, and is still a good read, but for sheer volume of ideas, all with easy instuctions, use the website.

I bought this book for Halloween decoration ideas and this book didn't fail to disappoint. Unfortunately being an apartment-dweller, this book is geared towards people lucky enough to have a nice, big old house in New England with requisite front porch, etc. The food section provides some great ideas that go beyond candy corn and Dum-Dums, that anyone can try. It was fun just looking through the book. For those that go all out for Halloween, this is something that would be a welcome addition to their holiday deco library.

Amazon rules forbid me to ID my website, even though I don't profit from it.The book has black and white photos, but the photo quality is done well. What's great about this book is that it provides the reader with a well-written and researched documentary about this fine American company. Since these toys have not been made for a long time, books such as these do not go out-of-date. What's also good about the book is that you can fin it at a very good price!At the end of the book is a bibliography of books and magazines about Tootsietoys, so that you can research further if you can find these references. All in all, this book is great to have if you are a collector of these toys.

This is the clearly written and basic history of Tootsietoys. Every collector needs it. I use it often.

It has a lot of information, above all the history of how the different models were changing on time (half the book), but it lacks bigger pictures since the ones it has are small and black and white and not all the models have pictures either.

Great help for toy collecting!!

I bought this book for help with Excel formulas, but the book doesn’t even have them. The screen shots in the book are too small and in black and white which makes them difficult to read. Too much attention to the book’s web site and not enough information to be useful.

I purchased this text book to teach myself excel 2016 and 2013, however, when I got it the template images were so dim, blurry and poor, it hurts my eyes trying to read them. I decided to return it because I could not use and not worth my investment.

This is an excellent resource to help study for the MOS exam. I found the timed exercises at the end to be extremely helpful.
