Philippa Gregory is the author of many New York Times bestselling novels, including The Other Boleyn Girl, and is a recognized authority on women’s history. Gregory writes very well, and I enjoyed most aspects of her treatment of Margaret Beaufort. Still, the one overarching theme throughout the book is Margaret's overweening ambition coupled to her complete lack of self-awareness. If only we hadn't known this about her from the first pages, it would have kept me more engaged. Instead, there is never any doubt that Margaret sees herself as a perfect candidate for, if not sainthood, then for every honor that one human being can receive. She constantly wonders why others, so much less deserving than herself, keep receiving the things which she sees hers. Why are these things rightfully hers? Why, because she is God's most devout and devoted servant. Ergo, she alone deserves riches, respect and to be honored by others. All of her introspection, if such it can be called, is directed towards asking god to redress her endless grievances. This gets tiresome, hitting us as it does from the very first page. We get it, Margaret feels entitled.Still, her endless and mostly fruitless plots and schemes make an entertaining read, especially within the context of The White Queen, which should definitely be read before this volume. Her last two marriages are also well-explored by the author, and her feelings towards and interactions with first the cautious but honorable Henry Stafford and cautious but scheming Thomas Stanley were enough to keep me reading. Ultimately, and despite the protagonist's lack of introspection, I found it an enjoyable read.

The Red Queen is the a biography of a bad guy, and it's AWESOME!!Margaret Beaufort is this notorious/ infamous brutal & cold hearted women of English History, but how does someone get that way? Philippa Gregory lays down the foundation of how this woman came to be in this book, and who also becomes a prominent figure in multiple books after.As an influential figure in The Cousins War, she's never been one of my favorites; but I love this book for leveling me with who Margaret Beaufort is as a person and showing me why she is who she is. Philippa Gregory told the story of Margaret Beaufort in a way that evoked some emotions in me- she made me laugh, she made sad, she made me think, she humbled me, and she frustrated the heck out of me...and I loved every second!

This was a very interesting read. Lady Margaret is not a sympathetic character in my mind. It is true that women in this time period were ​little more than chattel, but she doesn't seem to know it. She doesn't appreciate her second husband, the only one who cares for her. When her third husband calls her out for her ambission, she is shocked. Her faith is not in God, but in her own greed and jealousy of the Yorks. It was fascinating to see how far she would go to put herself in a position of royalty. I didn't like her character, but I enjoyed filling in the history, even if it was fictional.

A bit easier for me to read than the first, The White Queen. The plot wasn’t as filled with conflict. And thank goodness for that! I had to put the first down to take a bit of a breather but this one I flew through!I was on the fence about this Queen, however. At first I was thinking I would like her more than Queen Elizabeth but as the story moved forward I became more confused with her motivation. Well, not her motivation, because that was always to put her son on the throne. But to the God aspect of her motivation. I feel like later on she was blaming everyone except herself for all the horrors in the world and she really should have been looking in the mirror instead of casting stones. She believed so fervently that God was backing her and her family that she would literally do anything that made that so!Even with that though, I really enjoyed how this one ended. There were questions that I had about the ending of the first and this one filled those in. There are still questions of course but I feel as if the next book in line, which is about The White Queen’s mother, does not sound as interesting to me as The White Princess which is #5 in this series! I just can’t wait that long!!

It's a rare story that gets told in the first person when that person is unlikeable and completely lacking in self-awareness. Lady Margaret sees herself in the mold of Joan of Arc, while we see her as unpleasant, wildly ambitious (for her son) and constantly scheming. That could make for an interesting contrast if the dichotomy between thought and action was slowly unveiled, but we're looking down our noses at Lady M in the first few pages after she announces she has "saints' knees".We learn little of her son, who is offstage for almost the entire book. Consequently when he does become king (I'm not giving anything away -- it's history!) there's no sense of joy or triumph. It's just another machination in a book that's full of 'em.So why four stars? Gregory writes extremely well. Two of Margaret's three husbands are fairly interesting. The endless plotting has its fascinations. And you get a good sense of what life was like for aspirants to the throne in the England of Richard III.

Although I enjoyed reading this book and I did learn quite a bit, by the end, I wondered if Paul Strathern loathed the entire Medici Family and the City of Florence in general. Additionally, he seemed to spend an unnecessary amount of time pointing out various individuals’ sexual proclivities and/or perversions. And his unsubstantiated opinions on certain artist’s homosexual leanings differ from many well respected art historians.If you want to learn about Florence, don’t make this your only book. The picture he paints is one tiny ugly slice of an otherwise magnificent people and city.

The text is straight forward. The narrative flows nicely. The information is informative and often witty. No doubt professional historians may be appalled by its style. For history buffs who know little or nothing about this important family of giants and midgets, givers and takers, saints and sinners, etc, this is an excellent read.

This family may be the most responsible for what has become known as the Renaissance. Not only were they patrons of the great masters of the time, some even lived in their family home. Wonderful prose makes this an extremely enjoyable read. Very hard to put down. Left me wanting to learn more about this exciting time in history.

Good introduction. Fair Italian map. Rather good Florence map. Good index. Well-constructed but very cheap paper. One very annoying point: the font size changed throughout the book, very often changing on the same pages from paragraph to paragraph. Found the last 100 pages, slow, plodding and rather uninteresting.

This is a highly readable book about the history of the Medici family beginning with founding father Cosimo through the last Medici Gian Gastone.

In my opinion, the Medici were one of the most interesting families of history. Banking and trading, arts and science patronage throughout the Renaissance, Vatican politics... they did it all. This book not only tells this story of the Medici, but zooms out enough to give you a sense of the world at the time so that you can better understand how they so profoundly affected it. The author has a great writing style, too. It’s intelligent, but also sports a novelist’s flare that pulls you along with its imagery and frequent wit.

Have read much on the deMedici family. Learning some new info here. Enjoying the writing style very much. The Audible voice is very pleasing.

I bought this for my grandma to read and she likes it but it is incredibly heavy. I would say that it is an advanced read. The facts are awesome and you got lots of information. It is incredibly well researched.

Steven C. Hayes, PhD, is Nevada Foundation Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada and a co-developer of ACT. What’s fabulous about this book is that it isn’t just a collection of techniques cobbled together around a loose philosophy. This is solid critical analysis based on a long history of philosophical and empirical development. The techniques stem from the theory, they are not just thrown together on top of a disconnected one. As a result, this is less a cookbook and more a thoughtful jaunt through humanity; what makes us think, how we do our thinking, and the root of our suffering.I’m not sure I’d recommend this to just anyone, as the philosophical writing can be a bit heavy for some, but anyone coming to this should walk away having been challenged and made the better for it.

Hayes writes clearly and makes his points well. I wish he'd credit some of the depth psychology predecessors who have already invented some of his interventions, particularly Gestalt psychology. While he has grounded the practice in a meta-psychology that is more acceptable in contemporary circles, the techniques are not ground breaking. Still, this is a good review and makes some tried and true approaches in therapy more acceptable to the contemporary paradigm.

there was some confusion with this other book with similar author but was more of a condense version but I like this book better because it was more information and case examples were informative. I deducted a star because of the confusion with the other similar book.

This new edition is impressive.This book explains the ACT model clearly, describes the links between ACT and the basic science and gives plenty of practical suggestions for practitioners.Highly recommended.

It is not easy reading, reafs like a college level book, but very informative and worth reading

I read two other books on ACT and found them helpful. I was curious as to the theory behind ACT. This book explains how the practice works and how it is applied by psychologists. Ideally, I would want a psychologist specializing in ACT to work with me. But I don't have any locally, going beyond the standard self-help approach.A non-geek just interested in using ACT to help themselves though will likely find this book too technical. I recommend _The Happiness Trap_ for them.

The seminal work on the theoretical links supporting ACT. Studying this along with experiencing the therapy firsthand breathes life into application. The workbook: Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life is very good in fulfilling much of the personal experiential work.

Thorough, in depth, authoritative: these three authors have brought a powerful philosophical perspective forward in such a way that front line clinicians can bring benefits to themselves and others.

Gary Chapman is very Christian based and this book is amazing IF you have a spouse that is willing to read the book and work on your marriage. There are a lot of great points in the book IF your spouse is not willing to work on the marriage that will reassure you that certain behavior and treatment is just not acceptable nor biblical. If you are reading this review, you are likely in tough times. God bless you on your journey.

I am only about 3/4 the through the book (audiobook). So far it has given me numerous things to acknowledge about myself. After-all, the only person we are truly able to change--is ourselves. The gap between the two of us has gotten so wide, I didn't think there was any hope for a bridge let alone a closeness again. Not just that, but also examples of how to really begin again. And Gary quotes exact scriptures to help me along the way. Love is a decision, not just a feeling. GOD bless you for searching for help & not just throwing in the towel.

I love love the The Five Love Languages, but this book is awful. My husband and I reading it together and even he has problems with some it. Definitely don’t read this with your spouse if they have cheated on you, because it’s as if he is validating the adulter rather the victim. Also, it seems to put most of the blame or responsibility of saving the marriage on the wife. Be very very careful before reading this with your spouse. So far it hasn’t helped my husband and I at, but rather has made things worse.

I purchased this book with high expectations that were unmet. The appropriate title should read "Its the wife's job to fix any and all problems". I do not recommend this book if you truly wish to give it one more try.

One More Try... My husband and I are recently separated. These past few weeks have been the hardest of my life, but through this I have drawn so much closer to God. It's a whole new level. I feel complete peace and joy, trusting like never before that God will fulfill His promise to me. This is the only book I know of that deals with Christians who are currently separated or close to divorce. It supports reconciliation if possible, and peace when not possible. This book is great for anyone who does not want a divorce, but doesn't have a choice. Learn how to forgive your spouse and yourself despite the outcome of your marriage. Be strong, Brothers and Sisters. Give Him all your brokenness and HE WILL RESTORE. He is the potter, we are the clay. Let Him mold you into a vessel for Him. { Romans 8:28 }

Ok so I have read alot of Chapman books and this one has to be his worst. Not that I am an agnostic but the religious demeanor in which this book is written is a serious turn off. The book pretty much says if you don't believe in Christ and you're not a Christian that giving it one more try really isn't going to work

I loved the 5 Love Languages, so I read this whole book thinking, "I'm sure he is going to get to the 'How To' any minute now." He never did. There is no advice. No step by step directions. NOTHING. This book is useless.

This book is mostly a collection of pictures of individual marbles, seven to a page, supposedly marketed as an identification and price guide. It turns out to be a terrible waste of time and money for everyone.Promulgation of confusing and inaccurate terminology should have ceased long ago, with the publication of more factual marble books such as Gartley and Carskadden's "Colonial Period and Early 18th Century Children's Toy Marbles" and Paul Baumann's "Collecting Antique Marbles".There is a minimum of text, probably because of a scarcity of knowledge on the author's part. An obvious lack of appreciation of the origins and manufacturing techniques of these marbles creates some major errors and omissions. For example, a variety of distinctly different marbles are lumped together as either "lined pottery" or "lined crockery" or both. Painted clay marbles, variegated porcelain marbles as well as decorated American stoneware marbles are all called "lined pottery". The same photograph is sometimes repeatedly used with a different caption. The term "sponge ware" is used so frequently and inaccurately as to be meaningless. No mention is made of the ubiquitous limestone marble, nor the uncommon marble cut and ground from red veined marble, which probably gave toy marbles their name. No distinction is made between modern machine ground, semi-precious stone marbles, (cheaper by the pound at rock shops) and expensive hand cut German agates from the 19th century. We don't need seven individual pictures of blue "Bennington" marbles (a misnomer by the way) on a single page! Cane handles are lumped together with distinctly different painted china marbles, and the artists responsible for modern painted china marbles are not acknowledged. There is not a single reference to any of the numerous and often inaccurate statements, and the short bibliography is useless. A lack of an index is not surprising, as I doubt the author could ever come up with one, given the disorganization of the book. This is a book any experienced collector would find useless and to which no new collector should ever be exposed.

Collecting the full spectrum of non-glass marbles is collecting the history of toy marbles. It should have been impossible to produce a book on non-glass marbles without mentioning details of their history and production, but this has now been accomplished, unfortunately.The hundreds of individual marble pictures vary greatly in interest. Many are redundant and the inferior pictures detract from the few excellent examples illustrated.Antique agate marbles are interspersed with modern mineral marbles.There is very little or nothing mentioned of wooden, hollow brass, limestone, alabaster, stoneware, sewer-tile or ivory toy marbles.Any ceramic marble coated with a colored glaze is called a "bennington", which is not helpful.There is no mention of the largest US agate marble factory which cut and ground Mexican onyx in the 1920s and 1930 in Los Angeles, California.No contemporary marble makers are named, although their marbles are illustrated profusely.No distinction is made between earthen ware, red ware, stone ware (very old German as well as 100 year old Akron), yellow ware (generally from the US) white ware or porcelain (usually German).Any marble with surface lines is arbitrarily called "line pottery" or "line crockery" or "lined china".Unfortunately, since rarity does not greatly influence price (value) amongst many ordinary ceramic toy marbles, it appears there was no incentive for the author to accurately categorize them.I'm not looking for a treatise on ceramics, but at a list price of $50, some attempt should have been made to progress from the folksy and sloppy jargon of the past to well established classification used by ceramic collectors. Such impaired communication inhibits progress; ceramic marble collectors will have to wait for a better book, which is long overdue.

About the Author

Irene Nowell, OSB, is a Benedictine of Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas, where she has lived for almost sixty years. An accomplished theologian and biblical scholar, Nowell is a past president of the Catholic Biblical Association and the author of Numbers (of the New Collegeville Bible Commentary); Sing a New Song: The Psalms in the Sunday Lectionary; Women in the Old Testament; and Pleading, Cursing, Praising; all published by Liturgical Press. She is also a member of the editorial board of Give Us This Day (Liturgical Press).

Any book by Irene Nowell is worth reading, but this volume is one of her best. So many people avoid the Psalms (except perhaps Ps. 23) because they don't think they have any relevance to today's life. Northing could be further from the truth and Sr. Irene reveals the pitifalls of ignoring the Psalms. Extremely easy to read and deeply moving. I use this book with all our people in formation to become Benedictine Oblates (lay people affiliated with a Benedictine monastery). I cannot over emphasize how great this book is!!

Irene Nowell provides a compelling reflection on the Psalms.The reader is drawn into the subject early in the book.This book is perfect for people who want to learn more about the Psalms as well as for those who have the Psalms at the center of their lives - whether by practicing their singing on Sunday, or as part of their daily prayer.There is much food for thought in Irene's content and her reflection questions.A great read for individuals and for book clubs!

This is a great introduction to the Psalms, as well as a review for those who have the psalms "in their bones." I used it for a short, experiential study in a small group setting, and the guides at the end of the chapters were very helpful. Whatever Sr. Irene writes is well worth reading; this book only reinforced my previous conclusions.

Short book so it is very quick read. Speaks to the diversity of the Psalms. Good form critical review of Psalms.

Ordered both the electronic and paperback versions in order to have access at many times. Appreciate Irene Nowell OSB informed insight and creative way to see oneself. I have never thought of talking to God in such a way. I not stopped to do each of the Exercises at the end of the chapters but have had fun sharing the A-Z method with friends. The Prayer at the end of each chapter is so to the point and refreshing - almost as though she knew what my heart wanted to say!

For me, as a serious (lay) student of the Psalms Sister Irene has been a heroine for quite a few years. This little book is a big thing and will not disappoint anyone, whether competent scholar or curious lay person. I doubt anyone else could have brought so much depth and context to the subject of the Psalms as she has tucked into this little volume. Anyone familiar with her several works on the Old Testament and the Psalms will read between the lines that she was, indeed, called to create this volume. It is a perfect sequel to her many other works. If you want to know why it is a good thing to study and pray the psalms, READ THIS BOOK!
