In just having recently completed a development project creating portlets for the first time with a Java Portlet Specification 2.0 (JSR 286) compliant portal server, I hope I can provide some insight into the effectiveness of this book, since I used it to hit the ground running. Simply put, I agree with some of the other reviews here that this book is very well put together. The progression of content that the author provides from one chapter to the next is effective for those newly tackling portal development. As a consultant in such a situation, I especially appreciated Chapter 1 ("Introducing Portals and Portlets"), Chapter 2 ("The Portlet Lifecycle"), Chapter 3 ("Portlet 2.0 API: Portlet Objects and Container-runtime Options"), Chapter 6 ("Using the Portlet Tag Library"), Chapter 7 ("Getting Started with Spring Portlet MVC"), and Chapter 11 ("Communicating with Other Portlets"). The UML sequence diagrams that the author provides greatly aided the material. And believe it or not, even at almost 600-pages the author even thankfully left out the fluff that one can unfortunately often expect in other developer texts of this genre. That said, however, potential readers need to be aware of what this book does and does not provide. Unless the reader is using Liferay, the most frequently referenced portal server in this book, they should not expect to be able to get up to speed with any specific portal server. My target portal server, for example, was IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1.0, and this specific portal server is only mentioned in passing a few times by the author. Usage of the XML Configuration Interface, commonly known as XMLAccess, for example, which is a requirement when using the portal server in my project environment, was not covered. Personalization rules and managing portal pages was also not covered. As with other Java specifications, much is left up to implementers with regard to what is under the covers, but as with application servers, portal servers also provide features that sit outside these specifications. While I did not purchase this text expecting that the WebSphere implementation would be covered, as a novice in this space I also was not aware how much I would be dependent on product specific features. Well recommended guide and reference for those new to portal development, especially with Spring Portlet MVC.

This book has been my crown savior in a sea of google searching! There isn't a single source that is as comprehensive as this book. If you're looking to get in to portlet development, this is the best place to start. A little bit of background in servlets does make the reading go a bit faster, but is not required. Step by step guides with images and examples fill every chapter alongside detailed explanations and definitions. Thank you for taking the time to put together such a comprehensive book!

I am working in portal/portlet development for the last 2 years and I was looking for a good Portal book for the last 2 years or so. This is the first major book for portal and portlet technology. After reading this I would like to congratulate author as he has given a book which is helpful for new as well as experienced portal/portlet developers. This book gives a complete insight of Portlet technology as well as Spring Portlet MVC framework with good code examples. The author has covered almost everything necessary for portlet development e.g. portal framework explanation, various frameworks that can be used for portlet development and advanced topics like Ajax integration with portlet technology with examples including several JavaScript libraries and Ajax frameworks like DOJO,DWR.This book is a must have for all Portlet developers.

This book was very well written, it was clear, and the code examples built and deployed without fixing. It was comprehensive, and unlike most of the eBooks I have purchased, it seems to have been edited by somebody who speaks the same language the book was written in...

Read this book first, then download the documentation for the portlet container you plan to write on.I have read many books on portal development, and Liferay development in particular and this book is by far the best for a serious Java developer wanting to increase their portal development skill in areas that can be applied across portal containers. Many of the books out now are little more than an introduction to the portal container or an extension to the admin Guide. This book goes where others don't. It actually has examples that the reader can follow step by step, without the many headaches the other books require. The source code is well written and displays many nice features of Spring as well as the portlet spec. This book puts the "in Action" back in the brand many of us once relied on for step by step IT instruction. This book will make you a better developer in the Spring MVC space and get you proficient in the portal space as well. The book covers validation, security, localization, caching, Portal Admin, portlet tag library, inter portlet communication, Spring Portlet MVC, Hibernate, Spring annotations, integrating portlets with databases, personalization of portlets, Ajax portlets, iFrame portlets, wicket portlets, WSRP, building a custom portal. It is both a great learning tool for portlet development and great polisher for Spring skills as well.If you do any portlet development or are thinking of doing any you need this book. If you are working with Liferay at all then this book is a MUST HAVE for you, even more than the admin guide.

Be careful when ordering this book to make sure you are getting what you ordered. Both books, "The Wife of Bath" (Case Studies in Contemporary Criticism) and "The Wife of Bath" (poem only) are linked to these reviews. Due to the way Amazon.com has the links set up, it is easy to believe you are ordering the Case Studies version, but end up receiving only the poem. If you want a book that includes the historical context information and critical essays, etc., make sure you click on the right book! If you click on the paperback version you will get the book with Chaucer's poem, only. I waited three weeks for my order and when I received it, it was incorrect. Very disappointing, especially since I need it for a paper I'm writing and now it's too late to order the Case Studies. (Fortunately, the Case Studies version was returned to the University library and I got a chance to use it--it's a good book.)

This book has historical context; The Wife's prologue and tale; New Historicism Criticism regarding The Wife; Marxism and Psychoanalytic Criticism; and Deconstruction and Feminist Criticism. For anyone doing a paper, class, or any type of study regarding The Wife of Bath, this is an excellent book to have. It is easy to read and understand. You get to view the Wife of Bath from 5 different critical perspectives and each chapter ends with a Works Cited page which is an excellent reference for further research.

I recommend this book to anybody interested in Sir Geoffrey Chaucer's Wife of Bath or the Canterbury Tales. The essays and articles are insightful, well-written, and extremely thought provoking. If you are a fan or a student studying the Canterbury Tales and you need to read more about the Wife of Bath, this is the book for you. I love the style and design of the book. It is well structured and organized. No other book out there covers the Wife of Bath like this book.

Great condition

This book is completely pointless.Don't waste your money and buy the WOB in paperback.

Great book to read to my STEM classes, as we are starting a school garden!

The aspect of Our School Garden that is most appealing is that it is written from the perspective of those who have been directly involved in school gardening. It includes practical examples of what schools can do to make use of school gardening as an opportunity for creative teaching and learning. The charming illustrations and the section on the history of school gardening made this book both enjoyable and useful.

Its a great book for kids and their parents, grandparents, and educators.I got it for my son and his new family living in the city, but with a nice big terrace a disposition.

I tried reading the first book a while ago, and honestly got lost with all of the characters. After watching the TV show, it was easier for me to keep them all straight in my head. This is coming from a life-long avid reader (I read almost every day and have a library of books under my belt). All that said, once you get your mind wrapped around the characters, the books are phenomenal. It's not an easy read, no - but it's well worth the effort. Even if you've seen the TV show, the books keep you enthralled in this fantasy world. Highly recommend!

I don't know how someone read this and thought it would make a good series. I'm glad they did, but don't expect the series to be like the books. I read a lot, all types of genres, but I had to force myself to get through as much as I did. The books and the series are so different I could not watch and read at the same time. Just as a book, without comparing it to the series, it is filled with way too much unnecessary information. There were far too many characters that didn't matter to warrant mentioning there name. If I had to read what someone was wearing one more time, I was going to throw the book. It needs to be cut by 70% to remove the waste.

This is book two in the Game of Thrones series. At this point, King Joffrey is the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. Because he is still a boy, his mother remains Queen Regent. Joffrey remains cruel and is holding Sansa hostage at King's Landing. Now that Sansa's traitor father is dead, Joffrey and his mother refuse to let her go home. Sansa's sister, Arya is posing as an orphan boy and trying to get back to Winterfell. Sansa's brother, Robb - King of the North - is battling to rein the seven kingdoms. Danerys is trying to get to Kings Landing so she can become the rightful Queen of the seven kingdoms. This book was as good as the first. RR. Martin is a very talented writer. There are 1000 characters, and you sometimes get a little lost on who belongs to you, but it doesn't distract from the story. Even though he writes about a fictional world, he doesn't make up words just to make them up. He makes those 1000 pages fly by.I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next. If you haven't tried this series yet, I highly recommend it.

As with the first novel in this fabulous series "A Clash of Kings" features memorable characters interwoven into a richly complex story of kings and lords, soldiers and knights, ladies and princesses. It is hard to overstate how engrossing this story is. Many of the characters are quite literally unforgettable. It all takes place in a world that never was, but which bears some resemblance to medieval Europe and Asia. Here, competing lords are vying for the Iron Throne -- the kingship of Westeros. The people of the North seek to break away and become an independent kingdom under the leadership of the Young Wolf, Robb Stark of Winterfell. This is a great story.Lord Tyrion Lannister dominates this second novel, but the other main characters (and many of the minor ones) are equally unforgettable and all are highly nuanced. The story sweeps forward as lords vie for the right to be the king. Don't miss this one. RJB.

As always every book from the Song of Ice and Fire series is amazing. This is the second book to the series and I love the allegories of this book which can be related to reality where power grab is common and often the order of the day. This books pick up from where the Game of Thrones left after the throne was succeeded by the son of Robert Baratheon, Joffrey Baratheon. Yet his succession to the Iron Throne is packed with controversies. This is the very same reason that prompted others to claim for the same throne. But what I find to be most frustrating was Stannis is claim to the throne is based on his legitimate succession as the eldest sibling of the former king but why the hell would his younger brother Renly made the same claim? Wouldn’t it be great if Stannis and Renly were on the same side against the Lannisters but that is how deep and complex the story and plots of the series that’s why I love it.I reccommend this to all the fans of the Game of Thrones series and those who are seeking books that has some element of political allegories in it. The same reason why I am reading the series aside from being fan of the popular TV series. As I said above the series is amazing and enlightening as I look at it from the perspective of political allegory.

The Girl Who Wouldn't Brush Her Hair, by Kate Bernheimer Jake Parker

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2–A nameless heroine refuses to brush her bear-brown hair after her nightly bath. When the grown-ups, who hover at the edges of the story, object, she says, “It's just my way.” A mouse nests in her tangled curls, but she is unafraid. Rather, she welcomes scores of other mice, enjoying the company of her companions who tell knock-knock jokes and are kind to her favorite doll, Baby. Soon, the girl discovers some drawbacks to her unusual situation. She must share her food with the mice, they refuse to go in the bath, and they keep her awake all night. The hungry, dirty, and exhausted little girl does not know what to do until her teacher tells her that she can't bring Baby to school because she already has too many naptime friends with her. The child gently explains to the mice that it is time for them to go. That night, she washes and brushes her locks and finally gets a good night's sleep. On the playground, a couple of mice scout for a new home in the pigtails of another little girl. It is “just their way.” The digitally colored illustrations focus on the girl, showing her in her comfortable home or her cheerful schoolroom. Her luminous face expressively portrays her emotional journey throughout the fanciful fable. For a more straightforward treatment that also addresses the resulting struggle between mother and daughter, try Lee Fox's delightful Ella Kazoo Will Not Brush Her Hair (Walker, 2010).–Linda L. From Booklist

A girl who won’t brush her hair finds herself with a mischief of mice upon her head. At first she delights in their company. They tell jokes and are nice to her baby doll, Baby. But the burden becomes heavy. The mice talk all night, leaving her sleep-deprived; they are ravenous, so the girl shares her lunch and goes hungry; they don’t like water, so the girl doesn’t bathe, which means she . . . smells. Worse, the teacher tells her she can’t have both the mice and Baby as her companions for naptime. But, as the girl explains to the mice, she really, really needs Baby. Glossy illustrations capture the growing, astonishing mess-of-a-hair-nest. The series of consequences spools out nicely even if the resolution feels a tad pat: the mice leave, and the girl takes a bath and, unprompted, brushes her hair. A less hair-raising adventure than Gaiman’s Crazy Hair (2009), but this tale will send kids the message that they must take care of their tresses. Preschool-Grade 1. --Jeanne McDermott

Oh how I want to love this book. It’s such a cute story & the artwork is great. I had a hard time deciding to give it 3 or 4 stars. It’s just so wordy! Some stuff needs to be edited out, some sentences need to be turned into 2 instead of one & a maybe a couple commas. I don’t think anyone read it out loud prior to printing. My 3 year old loves the book though, so we will keep it in our library for now. I’m usually not picky with the writing but this one drives me nuts.

I purchased this book for a friend whose granddaughter didn't want to brush her hair or let anyone else do it. We loved the book and hoped that the four year old would also. As it turns out, she would prefer to let mice build nests in her hair to brushing it, but the book is adorable (like my friends granddaughter).

This is a very nice book!! Excellent.. Brand New shape and the story was very clever and entertaining!! My 7 Year old really likes the story line and Mommy does too!! Highly recommend for anyone!! Teachers would also love this book!! I was thinking of sending it with my Daughter for her Teacher, to read at school.. but, i don't want to lose it!! I even wrote my Daughter's name on the front page to make sure no one takes it!! Very nicely illustrated and bright colorful pages!! We have read it a few times already and am looking forward to reading it again!! The story line does not get boring, and i could read it to my Daughter over and over again!! It is a smart, silly, interesting book!! I am going to look for other books from the same Author!!!

My 4-year old niece used to create hell every morning before school because she didn’t want her hair combed. Got this for her and she initially was a little upset (I don’t think I delivered the message very subtly) but she’s ended up loving the book - and she’s more amenable to getting her hair combed!

This book is cute with fun illustration. I purchased it for my 6yo because she hates brushing her hair but after we read this book once she never read it again. It has been sitting in a box for a month now and hasn't been touched again. I'm not sure if she outgrew these kind of picture books or this one didn't interest her enough but sort of disappointed it didn't even get ONE re-read from her.

I bought this for my granddaughter Her hair has at times been compared to a rats nest.Yes she doesn't like it brushed. Anyway she loved it I loved it, adorable illustrationsgreat little Fun story.

I liked the illustrations and the general story. I didn’t like the random tangents that break away from the story for a number of sentences. It went right over my kid’s head and made a cute story long. I just skip the random sentences so it’s short enough to hold my four year olds attention.

This is a cute story and illustrations. My daughter loves the book and likes to talk about what the mice does beyond what's in the book. Keeps her full attention and she knows if you miss/skip sections.

The Six-foot Bonsai is a remarkable story, well told by the only person who can tell it. Author Stacy Gleiss has opened her life and her heart to tell the hardest of truths. As a child in the 50’s and 60’s, like many other children, I would fantasize about living in a foreign land. Could I really fly on a magic Arabian carpet or live in a tree like Mowgli or better still Jane? When I grew older the mystery of these lands rather lessened as I was exposed to magazines like Holiday and National Geographic. Documentaries on television and travelogues held at the local library or our church, by those few lucky individuals who traveled to faraway places on missionary trips or for work in the ever more global economy, brought tales of these lands home. One of the countries which remain mysterious and romanticized is Japan. With its visions of cherry blossoms, Shirley MacLaine, as a poised yet coquettish kimono-clad hostess, in the 1961 movie My Geisha and the horticultural wonder of the miniature Bonsai tree, pruned to perfection¬; Japan still intrigues me. And what of the longtime and growing fascination with one of its most successful exports: anime?Popular broadcaster Paul Harvey made famous the phrase “the rest of the story” and for those like me, who subscribe to the credo that truth is indeed stranger than fiction, this book is for you. The rest of the story, revealed in the pages of The Six-Foot Bonsais, is the story of one lonely young girl from rural Michigan, whose family participated in a Japanese exchange student program, and whose enthrallment with Japan led her to an intimate experience of the underbelly of this ancient culture.Mesmerizing in a way only the truth can be, Stacy Gleiss, through her autobiography leads the reader to understand a darker side of Japan: from her dreamlike life on the island of Sado as the bride of a Japanese student, through her struggles to deprogram herself from all her dreams of becoming Japanese, back to the stunning reality of the nightmare from which the author still must untangle herself and help her children to do the same.Though the final chapters of this book are still, and probably in some ways will always be, lived out by its author, Stacy Gleiss shares, with uncommon openness, her life and her continued concerns for the effect Japan’s ancient practices, now disguised as innocent fantasy, have both in Japan and throughout the world, in the form of some anime.Through it all. she finds in her own backyard a faith that surprises and sustains her. This is an extremely personal story told by one who left her life only to find it again. Well-written in her own matter-of-fact style, Stacy’s experience has a larger message for her readers to contemplate. That of the long-lasting effect culture, and sub-cultures; whether those encountered in other lands, our own country or within families; have on us all.

The author embarked on her journey as a teenager who traveled to Japan in the late 1970's and immediately fell in love with its inimitable culture as well as some of the people living in it. Her unfortunate encounter with a smooth-taking pedophile led to years of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of a boorish bully who acted like may spoiled elder sons I have heard about. The difference here, I'd point out, was the extensive evidence he barely hid of his pedophilia tendencies and in her conflagration of the Japanese culture and her ex-husband's sickness, culminating in years of abuse she was unable to protect her daughter from, for which she suffered immeasurable guilt. At the end of the story, her spiritual discovery seemed to set her free. I'm glad for her, but as an atheist it's a bit difficult for me to digest. I share her grown children's skepticism about their recalcitrant father and his ability to "Right" a lifetime of wrongs. I'd caution against thinking that a love for Japanese or any other culture is an addiction, but in her case it seemed to have manifested as an escape valve in much the way that drugs or alcohol might. When she writes on Japan's under-discussed "Lolikon" issue, in which young girls are fetishized by men of all ages, she presents a cogent argument begging for more attention from academia. I've lived nearly half my life in rural Japan and much of what she describes is familiar, from the music to the food, from the fashion to the fetishes. I hope she can unite with her daughter and share this story in Japanese, as I believe the message is vitally important. Please let the daughters of Japan know that their bodies are only their own!

Even at age 20 I share a strong relationship with the key problems of Japanese culture and what it can bring out in sexual ways, which is expressed in it's fullest in this book.Stacy Gleiss is a strong person all throughout her life, even through the experiences that would make most people want to commit suicide, and she writes about each event in this book in each event's detail. This is an incredibly compelling read, and teaches a lesson about the dangers of cultural addiction. This is the only book I've found that expresses the problem with sexual exploitation and abuse of under aged girls in Japan, because it is still a surprisingly huge problem. Now that Japanese media is coming more and more into the United States, I think it's important just to look at everything with a cautionary eye.If you ever plan on living to Japan, this is a MUST READ before you do!

SPOILERS BELOW:It’s hard to review a memoire, as the story was someone’s actual life, but here goes.Gleiss was a lonely, bullied, “disfigured” child whose desperate need for acceptance and attention led her down a rabbit hole of bad decisions that destroyed more than just her own life.Reading this book was like watching a train wreck begin in slow motion and then play in double time. I expected her first encounter with her evil ex-husband to be that of a moon-eyed teenager swooning over and exotic older man, but was disturbed to see she saw the warning signs IMMEDIATELY and still pursued this man who would one day rape her daughter. From bad decision to bad decision, Gleiss dug herself in so deep that her spiral out of control was easy to see coming and she must have been out of her mind to continue as she did for so long.Though it seems to end in the author finding peace, as someone who lost faith early in life, I find it hard to believe her “finding Christ” is anything more than another obsession to replace Japan. As for Gleiss’s ex-husband, as a casual fan of Japan and anime, this book is a good warning of how detrimental the lolikon culture can be to its consumers and those around them.
