I teach sixth grade and have taught The Giver many many years. I love teaching it so much but I really struggle to help my English language learners and my struggling readers to grasp everything that is happening in the book and what it all means. I have been dying for something like this to come out for many years---I just received this book yesterday and already, a girl in my class has checked it out and said that it was helping her to understand the story better (she's and English language learner). I just ordered two more copies to keep in my classroom. I love how faithful it is to the book. Of course, we will keep reading the traditional/ original version in class, but this book means that more of my students will understand the story and hopefully be able to participate in the discussions and activities we do. Yay for tools that help me reach ALL of my students:)
I have read the prose version of The Giver too many times to count, so I was excited when the graphic novel version was announced and eager to read it when it arrived. P. Craig Russell does an excellent job of illustrating Jonas's world and bringing "sameness" to life. The use of blues instead of greytones to indicate the lack of color is extraordinarily effective, as is the use of a single color in most of the memories that Jonas receives from the Giver. I read an interview with Russell in which he discussed his interpretation of the book's ending (no spoilers here, and we're just going to ignore that the other three books in the Giver Quartet exist) and was pleased to read that he and I shared our view of how the book ends. The graphic rendering of the ending is very well done--and still somewhat open for interpretation. All that said, the fact that I was able to SEE all the horrors of Jonas's society made everything so much worse. It was one thing reading it and imagining it myself, but it was a completely different animal when it was laid out in visual form on the page. Again, no spoilers, but I was extremely affected by chapter 20 and onwards, to the point where I can say that this is an extraordinary and important graphic novel that I never want to read again.
I knew this was going to be good, but I had no idea that it would be so incredibly close to the novel. There is a lot of text here accompanying the gorgeous illustrations. I'd say that 80% of the text from the novel is here if not more. It's a lot denser and word-rich than I expected it to be. Wow! While I enjoyed the movie version of "The Giver", I was not entirely happy with the ginormous changes Hollywood made to Jonas and his community. This graphic novel doesn't age Jonas or create love triangles; luckily for all of us it's a very faithful and loving take on this beloved book.
This is absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to give it to my daughter for Valentine's Day tomorrow! The Giver has been my all time favorite book since I was a child. I read it periodically and have the quartet myself. I have read the majority of it to my daughter but I believe this would help her envision the book more. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and does the book complete justice! Thank you, Lois Lowry and Craig Russell, for having the vision to create this!
This is a masterpiece. I have rarely, if ever, been so moved by a work of graphic fiction. Mr. Russell just keeps getting better and better. His pacing, line work and composition are all flawless. I’m going to want to have several copies on hand to give as gifts to friends and family. Do yourself a favor and pick this up!
Loved it. Great art, great story. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed. I plan on reading the novel next.

So as someone who struggled with Shakespeare in high school, the first time I ever understood it was reading "Hamlet On a Rooftop" by Will Eisner—a fantastic, seminal creator you should look up if you've never heard of him. It was the “To be or not to be†speech, acted out on a tenement rooftop by a young dude with a switchblade, and I immediately went, “Whoa, this all makes SENSE now. They should use comics to teach English—no, they should use comics to teach EVERYTHING!" And I still believe that. I’ve told parents if they're having a tough time getting their kids to read, or the kids are just having a tough time reading period, give 'em a comic book; that magical blend of words and pictures can work wonders. So the review here from the 6th grade teacher now using the graphic novel to teach the book to English-language learners? Brilliant. Makes my heart beat a little bit faster for an art form I’ve loved so much for so long. Mahalo. And, oh yeah, what about MY review, lol? Well, for starters, P. Craig Russell is my favorite artist/storyteller in the industry today, has been for many, many years. He is, hands down, THE adapter of literary (and operatic) work in the field because he doesn't change ANYTHING text-wise, so all the writing is straight from the source; and he visually embellishes things that are only suggested, which is what a good artist should do. Anyway, I’d heard of The Giver over the years but hadn’t read it, and I have to say that, for me at least, it works BETTER as a comic. I think just reading about this starkly metaphorical community—SPOILER ALERT—where EVERYTHING is regulated, from thoughts and feelings to landscape and weather, would’ve gotten dull and monotonous because, well, the world of the book is numbingly dull and monotonous. Of course, there’s a slight, ever-present tone of discomfort and unsettledness lurking just below the surface, and it’s disturbing…but it’s subtle. Which is where the visual storytelling of Mr. Russell comes in: It heightens the sameness and unsettledness in that statically alive way that isn't film, theatre, illustration, or prose, but incorporates ALL those elements and is unique to the comic medium. Like Eisner did with Shakespeare, Russell makes me get the story in way I wouldn't have if it was just words. But, hey, I’m biased. I’m a forever kid who had the toughest time in high school English and just wanted to read comics all day long. And maybe if I’d had something like The Giver graphic novel available to me, it wouldn’t have been so bad. Get yourself a copy and be a kid again.
