For over 35 years Nathan and Oski's Hematology has been the precious companion for the pediatrician in pediatric hematology or the pediatrician on the ward looking for answers to thorny clinical questions. The present heavy book on my desk is the seventh edition. The oncology part of this book has been taken out in this edition and a new textbook (Oncology of infancy and childhood) created to deal with this vast field (see another review in this issue).Personally I am very fond of history, because I believe it is important to know our past in order to understrand our present and future, so I am very delighted to again see the first chapter of this book with the history of pediatric hematology put in perspective by Wolf Zuelzer, who passed away in 1987 and updated by David Nathan. I am especially happy to see the reference to two of my mentors from my time at the University Hospital (Rigshospitalet) in Copenhagen, Svend Heinild (1907-1994) and Preben Plum (1906-2002), who as general pediatricians also contributed to the field of hematology with their research and treatment.The chapter on the Thalassemias is also very profound and saw the discussion of the alpha Thallassemia with intellectual disability/mental retardation, which is rare but maybe an under-diagnosed entity.All in all a book that should be in the library of every pediatric department around the world.Professor Joav Merrick, MD, MMedSci, DMScMinistry of Social Affairs, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Jerusalem, Israel and Kentucky Children's Hospital, University of Kentucky, Lexington, United States.[...]

My 1st grade daughter recently did a report on Bessie Coleman, and this was one of three books that she referenced for the report. First, Bessie Coleman is an amazing figure in history and her life captivated the attention of my daughter - she's now an expert (for her age) on the life of Bessie Coleman. This book gets into a fair amount of detail compared to other books on the same subject for this age set, so it was the last of the three books that my daughter and I read together for her project. The format of a graphic novelization really held my daughter's interest, though I believe that if we'd read this book first before reading more simplified accounts of Bessie Coleman's life, the amount of information would have been a bit overwhelming for a 6 year old. In all, a great book about an exciting hero - my daughter and I highly recommend it!

My students love nonfiction and they love biographies - this book brings them both together. The comic book format presents the facts on Bessie Coleman in a fun and entertaining way, so that even students who wouldn't normally pick up a biography are more likely to read one. I have purchased many books in this series, and plan on purchasing more.

I can say all the good things I have said of the other Graphic Library collections. Chapter structure, thematic thread, accessible to comprehension instruction strategies, vocabulary at grade level, and excellent graphics. Like the Amelia Earhart, this one starts the story with the first panel, where Bessie communicates the kind of person she is, not an Uncle Tom. I could recommend any of these stories.
