I read Jim Forest's _Praying with Icons_ a few years ago when it first appeared. I just finished re-reading it, and am even more impressed this time around. Anyone familiar with Forest's other books knows how comfortably fluid his style is, and how insightful his ideas are. Both of these qualities make this the single best introduction to icons I know.To my mind, there are three different but interrelated aspects of this book that are especially worth noting.The first is Forest's argument that "beauty bears witness to God," and that in depicting holy things beautifully, icons enhance our relationship with the Divine. This is a point well worth considering. Too often, I fear, beauty in the context of worship is either dismissed as irrelevant (all that matters is the word), venerated for its own sake (high church preciousness), or overdone and distractingly gaudy. But Forest reminds us that the beauty of icons is intended to aid in the transfiguration of those who pray before them. Icons are images of the wholeness of God, and they convey and impart some of that wholeness to us through their beauty. It takes a great deal of artistry to manifest that kind of beauty.The second point worth noting is Forest's observation that the writing/painting of an icon is in itself an act of worship and service, entered into reverently and prayerfully. There are traditions that dictate how the wood is prepared, how the colors are selected, what they represent, and so on. The care and love with which icons are made is a good reminder that all work with God's creation is, or ought to be, mindful and reverential. The fruits of all our mental and physical labor are, in one manner of speaking, iconic.The third especially noteworthy aspect of Forest's treatment is his tie-in of prayer with icons. It might seem that the connection between the two is obvious, but I'm not sure this is the cas, at least not in the contemporary U.S.. I've been in many homes where icons are displayed as curiosities, by totally secular hosts, on the walls right next to African masks and Peruvian weavings. Forest's reflections on prayer--that it involves the whole person, not just the intellect, that it requires the cultivation of stillness and silence, that a good prayer life is one that requires a great deal of deliberate discipline, and that the goal of our prayer life is theosis--are wonderful.In addition, as earlier reviewers have pointed out, the last 150 pages of the book discuss specific icons--Christ, Mary, the saints, the Transfiguration, etc--pointing out their language, their significance, and their histories. Readers of Forest's book will be well prepared to begin praying with icons, and to move on to other reflections on icons such as John of Damascus' _On the Divine Images_ or Leonid Ouspensky & Vladimir Lossky's _The Meaning of Icons_.Finally, the illustrations, in color as well as black-and-white, are fabulous. A book to read and re-read.

Beautifully written book that is both easy to read and profoundly aware of the theology and mystery behind icons within the Orthodox liturgical and theological traditions. No detail in an icon goes unnoticed in this book, and I originally purchased it as part of an inquiry class. I would absolutely recommend this book to any inquirer into Eastern Orthodoxy or Eastern Catholicism, or any Orthodox/Byzantine Catholic looking to learn more about their own traditions.

It's well written and overall a good read and reference book. Have already recommended it to my friends. I liked the book so much I now have the ebook and hard copy.

I had always looked at Icons and labeled them 'primitive christian art'. But after reading Jim Forest's book 'Praying with Icons', I have fallen in love with iconography. The Icon artist does not paint without intention; each item in an icon has theological significance.For me, reading this book, has been a journey, an opportunity to reflect and deepen my faith. The excerpts from the Orthodox writings and liturgy are profoundly moving. It also is a lesson to view ALL religious art in a deeper way. What was the artist trying to communicate? How did he feel about his subject matter? Why did he choose the colors, are they significant to his vision? What compositional elements did the artist use to communicate his message? These are some of the questions one can ask when they view ANY religious art.Lastly, an icon or a painting, can bring one to prayer; where one can clear away the clutter of modern life to reach that inner place within where one encounters truth, and communicates with the God who loves us.

Absolutely wonderful intro to living with and praying with icons. Very easy and enjoyable to read. Great history and info about icons, both as religious items and pieces of art. Inspirational and spiritual. I'm Episcopalian, and I now have a icon corner that includes the Mt. Sinai Pantocrator and the Theotokos of Vladimir, among others. Beautiful!!

As a Roman Catholic deacon who has recently begun writing icons, I am very impressed with this beautiful book by Jim Forest. I found Part I - In the Image of God especially helpful in his description of the qualities of an icon, color in iconography and the rules of an icon painter. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about iconography.

I enjoy reading this on my kindle and the fact that it can read to me! I've recently had surgery and cannot wear my glasses yet wanted to know the contents of the book. I appreciate the approach of the author in composition and use of language. It is simply well done and comprehensive.

Our 4 year old loves this book and now loves knowing how to identify clouds.

My son first read this book at the library and fell in love with it. The author does a phenomenal job of explaining clouds to children as young as three. Beautifully illustrated too! My son now knows the three main types of clouds (he's four!).

My 5 year old loves to find shapes in the clouds and asked how clouds were made. This book was perfect. Now, she is even more in love with clouds.

Got this as an end of school year presents for my sons K classroom and the teacher and students loved it!

Book was purchased with intent to learn more about the problems business's face when entering into emerging markets. The book clearly illustrates (literally there are graphs and other visual aids) the problems and opportunities in emerging markets as well as emerging markets competing for business in developed markets. It was very easy to understand, and I have this book as a reference while traveling to 3rd world countries and can speak for it's accuracy about defining institutional voids. I am layman, but this book was written for the widest possible audience. It is full of case studies to define the author's message and give credibility to questions and solutions they pose.This book is for you if.......- Would like to learn the definition of emerging markets and examples of such- Are considering expanding business operations and need superficial information on what to expect.- Like to get an idea of how business solve problems when trying to enter or compete against emerging marketsThis book is not for you if.......- You do not care about international business- Expect all the answers from one book, that type of information will result from proper due diligence.

I am a business professor. I found the articles from which this book grew so helpful in my graduate global marketing class that I decided to adopt it as a text for the class.The underlying theory is easy to understand and provides a good model for better understanding the challenges in and from emerging markets. The book also provides extended examples of the various situations and companies that have used the various strategies the authors suggest in those situations.

The book is informative, but this subject material is rapidly changing ("emerging markets" never stop emerging). Some of the material is a little obvious, and I felt like I could sum up the book in a few sentences. However, some of the tools included in the book are useful for people who are in businesses expanding internationally, whether it be in emerging markets or developed markets.

This was a required read for a course on emerging markets at Wharton. Extremely pragmatic and a useful handbook for thinking about institutional voids and what they mean for doing business. Well-written and concise. Really liked the combination of thoughtful overviews with checklists.

Bought this for class. It worked well. It is well-written in an easy manner. The concepts are clear and easy to understand, then it becomes heavily detailed. Glad to have bought this product and recommend this.

Some really valuable toolkits for navigating emerging markets. My only criticism is it gets quite boring at times, often reading like a textbook

A little disappointed that the book was used. It was my understanding I was ordering a new book. Since I saved a lot vs. the bookstore I am happy about that. However, in the used condition all of the review tests inside were completely filled out, which will be distracting for me when I need them for review....really people if you plan on re-selling your textbook you should have the courtesy to not write in pen! If you plan to keep them for reference pen ahead.

This book made me angry. I learned nothing new-nothing that many other authors hadn't already written about. There are so many other books out there that are much more insightful and helpful. I'm ticked that I wasted my money on such superficial trash. It's like the author read some really great books on the subject and thought he'd summarize a few of them. Don't understand the good reviews.

Although I agree with eating every 2 or 3 hours, I'm sorry but a 100 calorie piece of fruit will not satisfy me for longer than a tablespoon of peanutbutter which is also 100 calories.If anything the fruit will make me hungrier. The peanubutter satisfies me and keeps me full until my next meal. I'm going through menopause for the past 2 months and notice changes happening in my body. I've always been a pretty good eater and always been able to maintain my weight but finding it harder since menopause kicked in. Thought this book might help, but sadly it did not.Continuing on my search.....

This book does have some good tips that aren't mentioned in other weight loss books but it is nothing special compared to all the others. Eat less, eat vegtables and whole grains. Do excersize. It is the same as all the others. I am finding that I need to get off my butt and work at weight loss there is no easy fix.

Horrible. Every chapter is like you're reading an infomercial! No true plan or answer like it says if offers. Total waste of time!!! I stopped reading it half way through, couldn't take anymore! Very disappointing!

I've never seen a crappier collection of advice. They want me to UP my carb intake. Idiots. And their "advice" about exercise is all wrong. I wish it were worth the time for me to return this. I'm too embarrassed to even give it away for free.

This book was a great read. I plan to follow it and hopefully see results. That will determine if it’s a great book.

This is a common sense book and I try to follow most of the suggestions. Big in this book is the 100 calorie snacking, an apple mid morning, etc... I've seen this work on some people, but I'm not one of them.... The premise of eating one type of carb at each meal is hard to remember to do but makes sense...just haven't been able to stick to it because one of the main menopause symptoms I have is a lack of motivation! I used to be a marathon runner....stopped mid-way a 17 mile run and said to myself "What the heck am I doing?" and walked home, this was 2 years ago. I have 4 marathons under my belt and my goal is to run a 5th when I'm 55, which is 16 months away but its even hard to motivate myself to walk! We need a book that deals with the blah mentality of menopause!

too difficult to follow. hate the way its written. extremely boring and complicated. come on. someone write something easier to follow along.
