I truly love this book!! I'm new to Aromatherapy and Essential Oils, but I believe in the concepts behind their use. I've been studying this book as if it was a college course. It gives basic information on how to use essential oils (EOs), and it explains in detail over 100 individual EOs-how the oils are extracted, which other oils it blends well with, the Latin name of the oils, and the properties and uses of the oils. Then the handbook gives recipes for the many uses of essential oils, how to use them, and what to avoid. For me, it is a perfect textbook, teaching me all the things I need to know about aromatherapy, essential oils, and how to use them. I definitely would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in essential oils and who is just starting out. Even people already familiar with EOs and aromatherapy would benefit by the recipes. I'd give this 10 stars if I could!

I recently got interested in essential oils. I started to learn from the internet . I believed that watching Youtube, reading the information given by essential oil companies, and Amazon"Look inside's" would be sufficient, but I quickly discovered that they left a lot of questions unanswered and also that a little knowledge is at time more dangerous than no knowledge at all, especially in terms of how to, how much and how safely use EO's. I ordered a few books and borrowed a few others at the library. The cheaper books were not not very useful. Two books came as the best: The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy by Valerie Worwood and this book. I much prefer this book over the Worwood's because it is better laid out and more easily approachable. The authors present 90 EO's. Some other oils are missing because they are rare, prohibitively expensive (or maybe unsafe).So is the case for Calendula which is presented in a separate section on how to make your own infused oils. I found the reference charts for conditions and the best oils approprite for them most useful.There are sections about children, skin care, haircare, massages, recipes for cosmetics( deodorant, bath oils, scrubs, mouth wash, colognes...). The authors are very clear in the dosage and ways to use each oil/ blends and are always concerned about safety.The recipes are not extravagant as I have seen in some of the other books. I do not think I have seen blends exceeding 4 EO's. I also appreciated the fact that the information was down to earth. Some of the information I have not found in other books, like what is the difference between a water and a hydrasol (ex: rose) All in all, this is a very thorough, useful piece of work, great for the beginner as well as the more informed.

If you want to get a good feel for this book, go read Wyld's theologygrams blog (theologygrams.wordpress.com). It's a mix of a lot of silly diagrams and a little bit of serious theology.I ordered the book after reading the blog for several months, and to my delight, the book is even somewhat better. Some of the content is from the blog, but much of it is new. The diagrams are drawn a little more nicely, and the book is laid out well. Wyld over-uses and abuses pie charts, but that mostly offends my sense of graphic and information design, and rarely harms the theology or the humor. Most importantly, nearly every diagram is accompanied by a paragraph or two which point back to scripture or emphasize the importance of the theological concepts being discussed. I found the book to be quite funny, but it also prompted me more than once to stop and think more deeply.

Theologygrams is a book that has charts, graphs, and illustrations explaining key concepts in the Old Testament, New Testament, and Christian theology. It is based on the author’s popular blog of the same name. The bio of the author states: “Rich Wyld is an Anglican priest and has a PhD from Durham University in theology. The blog came into being during some of the more tedious days of study.”There were times when I rolled my eyes in reading some of the charts, graphs, and illustrations because the jokes were corny or cheesy. The book also would have done better with less self-deprecation. It just makes me uncomfortable, maybe because I would like to be the sort of person who puts people at ease rather than making them overly defensive or apologetic. (People may read that last line and think, “Then get more of a sense of humor,” or “Stop being so nitpicky!” Fair point. Now I’m being self-deprecating!) But there were times when I chuckled after reading a chart, graph, or illustration and thought, “That’s cute.” The pie chart, “Marks of Mission,” comes to mind: there are small slivers with lofty marks of mission, but over three-fourths of the pie chart is devoted to “Anxiety about talking to other people.” Got that right! Another illustration catering to introverts was about how much time introverts spend at fellowship hour before they’re out the door! One cute pie chart, based on I Corinthians 2:2, dealt with what Paul knew when he came to Corinth. The vast majority of the pie was for “Jesus Christ, crucified,” but a very small sliver was for “Directions to Corinth”! There was another illustration that was both cute and informative, as it illustrated the challenges of finding a middle ground of translation between literal and free, using John 20:17 as an example.At times, the charts, graphs, and illustrations were pretty obvious. There was a chart about Jesus’ Parable of the Sower, and its point was that the good soil produced good fruit (Matthew 13). Another chart showed that God’s ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:9). Pretty straightforward! At some points, I hoped for a little more exegesis of the biblical text. Jesus’ Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-20) has long troubled me, since the master seems so hard on the unprofitable servant who buried his talent, sending him to hell (or some horrible place). Wyld offers the helpful insight that “My own view is that Jesus is not talking about failure through fear or weakness, but about complacency.” But the unprofitable servant in the parable seems to express fear and weakness! How would Wyld account for that? Plus, the discussion was somewhat spoiled by “But I’m getting too preachy so I’ll shut up.” No, please go on!There were charts, graphs, and illustrations that taught me something. One was about Jesus’ parable in Matthew 7:24-27 about building one’s house on rock versus building one’s house on sand, and Wyld referred to some scholars who want to flip Jesus’ imagery around because there were areas in which building one’s house on sand was better. Another one was about the Venerable Bede and his attitudes towards certain Christians, based on their spiritual character, their haircuts, and whether they kept the right date for Easter. Some of these Christians got two out of three right, in Bede’s eyes!While some charts, graphs, and illustrations were obvious, others required more thought. It took me some time to get used to the overlapping circles, but they eventually made more sense. There was one chart that was a “Just War Checklist.” It listed traditional Christian criteria for a just war and graded Star Wars, Dr. Who, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Independence Day according to them. That would require some thought: “Does the battle in this movie or book follow that criterion, or not?” I am a little confused by the “Apocalyptic Chess Puzzle.” John the Revelator is a pawn, and the only place he can move is one block forward. There are knights around, but John is out of their range, anyway, so what difference does his movement make? Is the point that he’s safe because God is in control?Some charts, graphs, and illustrations were particularly helpful because they clearly and simply explained a theological concept that I have encountered more than once, but I may not know it well enough to explain it at a dinner party. Wyld’s charts on Barthian dialectic, models of ethics (i.e., deontological, utilitarian, etc.), and revelation-based vs. natural law-based ethics come to mind. That last one was both educational and cute, as it showed how complex making ethical decisions can be!Some of the commentary was spiritually edifying or challenging. At one point, Wyld referred to a friend who said that many theologians can get caught up in talking about who others say Jesus is, but they should not forget the question, “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:13-20) On page 132, Wyld offers this edifying comment: “If theology seems like a very detached and academic discipline, Jeremiah might remind us that in a world of great suffering there is an urgent need to seek God for the sake of the world.”Overall, this was a light yet informative and edifying read.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My review is honest!

Do you need a laugh that will make you say, “that’s so true!” Theologygrams: Theology Explained in Diagrams, is the book for you. The only two grams is a work published by IVP and is the out workings of the personal website of Rich Wyld who is an Anglican minister who originally posted these comedic yet thought-provoking diagrams on his personal blog. Not often can a book be both humorous and thought-provoking while remaining theologically. Yet Wyld does a phenomenal job of blending the three. Some of the diagrams directly appeal to the person in the Pew While others are directed at Ministry leaders themselves.Or reading this book I could not stop laughing at each and every page. This is a book that I will keep on my bookshelf when I need a laugh, for it pokes fun at myself through satirical diagram humor. As a bonus if you are a very nerdy person, whether a theological nerd or a science fiction nerd you will find this book a treasure trove of humor. While this book may not win any Scholastic Awards it deserves to be read due to the thought-provoking satirical nature of the writer. I highly recommend it.This book was provided to me free of charge from IVP Academic in exchange for an unbiased, honest review.

I just wanted to read about the mob stories. The last 10% (luckily) of the book is where the real garbage starts with what can only be described as filler or a way to update the book maybe?He spends his time explaining the Mob Wives TV shows, how bad it is and how people who watch it must be stupid, yet he is confused why some of what is occurring in real life is not being covered. I’m guessing that the FBI didn’t want a person in protected custody being put at risk on TV. C’mon, Joe. He goes on and on about the TV show, literally giving us line for line from the script followed by reader comments from the internet for pages and pages and pages. If only there was a way to read internet comments yourself if you wanted to…You either watched Mob Wives or you don’t care. I fall under the latter. In-between reading about the show like it was a script, he interrupts to tell us if a girl looks hot to him or not. Then we get to the part where his website got so many hits that you can only assume he wrote this last 10% thinking people care. From 1,000 to 14,000 hits on your WordPress site; that’s nothing. Joe, you’re ranked 6,243,000 and some change. 14,000 hits to a story someone linked to do not make 10% of a book. Your instinct, this time was right, the show sucks and reading about it is more painful than the thought of watching it.

These are good books on criminals and mobsters through history, all having to do with New York City. Was hoping for a wider subject, but worth the price.

This a fun entertaining read for anyone interested in organized crime or criminal history. I would not recommend the volumes indidvidually, but I really enjoyed the set. It was repetative at times but even this I did not mind because it helped me to recall the various relationships that existed amongst the players.

I love these books. I am a real fan of mobsters. And these are great books to learn about the mafia.

Saw this reviewed in the NY Times and ordered it for two young friends. They thought it was hilarious. Am looking forward to more by this author.

Have you ever sat down and looked at books meant to instruct children in the art of reading from the early 18th to 19th centuries? When Americans colonists first came around to the idea of teaching children to read via books, the titles weren’t exactly what we’ve come to associate as kid friendly. “In Adam’s Fall we sinned all,” reads one particularly strident abecedarian title. Since that time we’ve moved away from heavy-handed didacticism couched as literacy aids, but here in the 21st century the tactics have shifted to a new angle. Now many schools have fully embraced the idea of “leveling” the books, which is to say each title is ascribed a distinct letter or number that indicates its text complexity, word count, etc. The idea is that you’d slot kids into a distinct level and then have them carefully read “up” from there. No backsliding. No skipping levels. No reading outside the box or exploring grown-up books on the sly or engaging with reading as anything but strictly leveled homework. Pleasure be darned. This is why I’m so grateful for books like Sergio Ruzzier’s new Fox and Chick series, starting with “The Party and Other Stories”. I don’t mean to imply that the book hasn’t already been “leveled” by its publisher (Lexile Scale: 370), but it’s one of those funny little titles that eschews the rigorous rote categorization educators try to place on it. It’s picture book sized with an easy book text (or is it an early chapter book?). The images look like comics but the humor is distinctly across ages. It is, in short, just the loveliest little book that ever you did see. To coin an overused but not inaccurate description: sublime.Friends Fox and Chick may get on one another's nerves from time to time, but their relationship is true blue. In this collection of three little stories, the first tale (“The Party”) follows Chick as he innocently asks Fox if he can use his bathroom. Fox agrees but when a great deal of time passes he discovers that the term “use the bathroom” can have multiple definitions. In “Good Soup”, Chick peppers Fox with questions about why he is denying his carnivorous tendencies. That is, until Fox reminds him that when you’re a baby chick in a great big world, maybe you shouldn’t go around pushing your luck. Finally, in “Sit Still”, Chick asks if he can be in Fox’s painting, but finds the art of posing more difficult than anticipated.Almost without meaning to, I found myself trying to define the relationship of the two main characters. When Publishers Weekly reviewed the book, its reviewer was baffled as to why Fox put up with Chick. That aspect actually made a lot of sense to my eyes. For me, the book’s most notable quality, in a way, is its utter and total lack of snark. True, Chick plays the role of jester, sometimes at Fox’s expense, but in this book Fox treats his little friend the way a patient big brother might. With that in mind, I was reminded of those Charlie and Lola books by Lauren Child. This book contains that same sweet patience, with the older, taller member considering the younger one with amusement and, at times, a touch of annoyance. Yet there is real love between these characters, and you get a sense of that. Fox never snaps at Chick, though he does occasionally take him to task on one matter or another. Why does Fox tolerate Chick? Well, why does any sibling tolerate their young, ardent, all-too frustrating relations? Because deep down they really like them, loathe though they might be to admit it out loud.Now I don’t want to alarm you but Mr. Sergio Ruzzier isn’t like those other illustrators out there. Uh-uh, the man is very different in one very notable respect: He is Italian. Shhh! You didn’t hear it from me! And honestly, you might well forget it were it not for the fact that his books are unapologetically European. Americans are lovely artists, but after a while it can all look a bit samey. The nice thing about Mr. Ruzzier is that he never blends in with the crowd. He might change his medium slightly or tweak the colors, but he can’t really get away from the fact that he just doesn’t look like anyone else. For example, in a particularly non-American move he doesn’t fill his books with big, violent, loud, crazy, slapdash scenes. The biggest accident that happens in this book involves a broken window that is never commented upon and that we never see break. These three stories are droll, but not boring. They amuse without slapstick. In this way they remind me of the best easy books out there, like “Frog and Toad” and “Houndsley and Catina”. Friends being friends in a world where the sky is always blue.One other way that Mr. Ruzzier makes this book so lovely is that he grants realism to the most unlikely of places. Put another way, he likes to include just the smallest of details to his scenes, lending them this ineffable sense of reality. When little animals leave Fox’s bathroom, the mole walks off, trailing a couple squares of toilet paper from his foot. Later, when Fox serves his soup to Chick in the kitchen/dining room, I noticed a single floor tile amongst the blue, yellow, and orange linoleum that was broken in half, revealing the concrete slab beneath (it’s on the endpapers too, if you notice). Look at the tiny remains of chopped vegetables lingering on the cutting board. Or (again with the tiles) the bathroom tile broken into three parts with the third long since missing. There’s some part of your brain that will notice this, even if the conscious part does not. Some part of you that will realize that the tile floor on the front endpapers of the book is clean and on the back endpapers is covered with detritus from the stories. And without even really realizing it, you’ll find that you like this book. You might not know why. But you will.I haven’t even really gotten into the fact that this is the first time I’ve seen Mr. Ruzzier try out a comic paneled format, complete with speech balloons. It’s perfect for this kind of book. You’d never in a million years imagine that he’d been doing anything other than comics all this time. The panels themselves change from time to time, and follow a couple patterns. For example, each of the three stories begin and end with two-page spreads. That said, he isn’t afraid to do four long vertical columns or line-less panels, should the scene necessitate it. Now imagine that he does all this while also using a highly textured watercolor paper that draws a certain level of attention to itself. The end result is comics that are unafraid to highlight their own medium. In short, the perfect way to meld classic picture book techniques with contemporary sequential art.For all that I rail against leveling children’s books, there’s one thing the whole process has done well: it has brought attention to easy books. They’re just so hard to find otherwise. Every year I try to find the best ones out there. Books with simple language and engaging plots, and every year I’m able to find only three or four (five if I’m lucky). This year, I was so grateful when I read this book. As you might imagine, it can be hard to locate easy books that aren’t just funny and sweet but also interesting and original. Ruzzier starts his new series off with a bang, melding art forms, employing great (and funny!) storytelling, and (maybe hardest of all) doing it with memorable characters. Can’t wait to see where he goes with it next.

Their antics and humor were well-received by my school age littles who found these two to be very entertaining. Despite the silliness, there are a few strong messages of friendship and self-confidence hidden within the pages.We loved the format of this book; it’s unlike anything we own currently. Think picture book and chapter book meet comic book with beautiful watercolor images in soft, sunny hues. It’s also the perfect length for Miss I, Who is just starting to gain confidence in reading on her own.

Kids loved it.

My 4 year old loved this book. He couldn’t stop laughing. Great book. The drawings are super cute. We will read this again for sure. Chick is hilarious.

I liked the first book a lot. I LOVED the second book. I could not stop laughing and backtracking to reread descriptions and interactions. I don't even know how to describe the story except to say unexpected happenings abounded. I feel in agony rightnow at having to wait three months for the third book to come out (I just finished Dark Arts and a Daquiri ten minutes ago). My only reservation is a slight anxiety at where the love angle will go. There are many potentials and author has stated that this will not be a reverse harem. Normally, I hate any inkling of triangles or quadrangles and tend to stick loyally to the first introduced hero. But... Team Ghost! Please author...

This volume of the series definitely hit more on the emotional level than the previous volume. While the first volume touched on Tori's abusive childhood, with this volume the author touches more on the fact that she was literally abandoned by all others because they just weren't willing to believe that her kind and single father could be such a monster and all she was doing was being a drama queen and seeking attention. It was during captivity that she finally sees that even though she was alone back then, now she has people who do worry for her and do look out for that she needs to learn to be more open and ask for help when she needs it. Also, I would of liked some more of Zak's backstory and some resolution to see if he is as big a douche as he acts. Plus, I would of also like to know of the death oath is still active or not. Who knows, maybe he'll make a return like the sorceress down the road.

This book was everything the first one was but magnified. The book was hysterical at times. Tori is complex and is beginning to understand more about herself and what drives her and how her behaviors may need to change. We learn more about our three mages which makes them even more interesting.Oh and if you had a team before, there another option in town. He may be favorite character in the series. That aside, I adore that with all of Annette Marie's books, she doesn't only focus on romance. She takes the time to develop all types of relationships between characters.This book was a joy to read from start to finish. I couldn't put it down and I am hungry for more.

This series keeps getting better! I love all the interactions between the characters as well as the mystery that surrounds Aaron's, Kai's, and especially Ezra's backgrounds. Marie does a phenomenal job playing the characters off one another, and creating humor in the most unexpected ways. I also like that there's some growth that is shown from both Tori and Aaron as they face their latest big bad. Kai and Ezra remain a bit of a mystery still, one I'm eagerly wanting to know more about! Overall, I love this world Marie has created and can't wait to see what else is in store for Tori and the gang!

Tori is walking contradiction. She is human; not a sorcerer, yet she tends bar in a sorcerer's guild/hangout. She is afraid of powerful mages, but jumps right in if one of her "crew" is threatened. She gets into a lots of scrapes, has a sassy mouth, and stands up for herself about half the time. This time, a young sorcerer is kidnapped, and it looks like the kidnapper is major bad guy. She agrees to act as bait to lure him out, but quickly gets into more hot water than she can handle. See what fun Tori's ingenuity gets her into and out of.

I just love this series. The characters are interesting and funny. The dialogue highly entertaining and witty. A great storyline with lots of magic and action. I totally enjoyed the interactions and plot twists.The book is well written and I can highly recommend this book and the series! Cannot wait for the next instalment and hope there are still many more books in store for this series. Write faster!!

Tori, red-haired bartender for a magical guild and close friend of three mages, takes part in a magical undercover sting operation that goes terribly wrong. Instead of taking down the deadly, evil Ghost, she becomes another of his victims. Where she ends up is nothing like what she imagined. Now all she has to do is figure out how to escape. I enjoyed every minute.

This book has a great story line. Even though it is the second book of the series there are new characters to meet and enough depth that you can really get to know them. Tori is a major kick but heroine who has a smart mouth, she seems to always find herself in over her head but she has the will to get herself out of trouble. She is not the damsel in distress character and that is why her team has her back.

I ordered this book to give to a friend as a hostess gift when I visit her next month.The subtitle of the book is "The True Value of Friendship." I somehow cannot associate the caption that, "Great friends cannot be manufactured in a laboratory by an evil genius," as being a factor of the value of friendship. Yes; it's meant to be clever and possibly funny, but it's just not my kind of humor. Some of the animals are dressed in costumes, such as pigs in grass skirts or a dog wearing glasses at a computer, and other dogs wearing clothes that may be pajamas. (A matter of individual taste, of course.) Near the end of the book are a dozen or so very negative things about "friends" who aren't really friends, such as bullies, drama queens, or those who are unreliable. Had I been the author or the editor, I would have omitted those pages and focused on the positive. The photos aren't great quality, and unrealistic color tints don't help, either.At the same time as purchasing this book, I also purchased FRIENDS FOREVER, by Anne Rogers Smyth. Had I been shopping in a bookstore and looked at both books, I would have chosen FRIENDS FOREVER and not both. (See my review of the other book, if you're interested.) I would not purchase FRIENDS TO THE END again, and it will not be a gift for my friend, as previously planned.

This “Feel Good” booklet contains sick and disturbing images of animal cruelty. Particularly disturbing are photos of rabbits being restrained as part of the sick and twisted practice of using them for cosmetic eye research.If you care at all about the cruelty inflected on defensless animals, Stsy away from this book!!It’s been weeks since I threw this piece of garbage in the trash, and I’m still haunted by the sick and disgusting pictures I saw in this book.

It covers not only the fun and intimate rewards of friends, but also those areas that rub us raw and make us want to go running away screaming. I'd like to find the person who thought it would be a good idea to take these wonderful B&W photos and colorize them -- and I'd like to give him or her a serious piece of my mind (think "pain."). Peeps, if you can find this book with the unadulterated photos, buy it, But what they did to this little gem is slap worthy.Three stars because the written content is still superb.
