This book is so inclusive of so many different kinds of Jewish experience! You don't need any background knowledge of Judaism to get something out of this book. It has something for the whole range of the Jewish people, from Orthodox and traditional Jews, to secular Jews, to same-sex couples, to those concerned about gender equality in their ceremony. The book discusses Sephardic tradition as well as Ashkenazi. Mixed religion couples and couples who come from different Jewish traditions get lots of advice as well. The focus is on the deep emotional and theological foundations of the ceremony and the marriage, and how they relate to family and cultural dynamics. The book is not a plug for the wedding industry (in fact, it warns you about getting too caught up in it) and it is not a fashion magazine. I like that, since the superficial aspects of a wedding are A. easy to figure out with a Google search, and B. bound to be unfulfilling if the underlying symbolism of the ceremony and the communication within the relationship are not well considered. You could probably plan a Jewish wedding using only this book. It is also well written and illustrated, and the author's tone is very friendly, considerate, and non-judgmental.
My partner is Jewish and I'm Christian. Now with marriage equality in Hawaii, we are planning our wedding in April. This book has been extremely helpful in designing our Jewish ceremony. It's very inclusive and covers everything from sample invitations, wedding traditions, ceremony outline and ideas for the reception. We found its online resources to be useful as well. If you're not Jewish, the author does a great job of explaining everything you need to know. This book is for gay and straight couples. We're using the author's ideas to create our own unique wedding.
Incredibly well researched, witty and warm, Kaplan-Mayer has offered one of the best books available for any couple looking to weave the beauty of Jewish wedding traditions with creative ideas reflecting a wide range of contemporary situations. In addition to the contents of the book, the design and layout are interesting and inviting. Kaplan-Mayer is an avid writer whose work combines wisdom, emotional intelligence, spiritual sensitivity, and practical how-to advice. Superb!
I loved this book. As a liberal reform Jewish woman marrying a wonderful catholic man, it was hard to find resources to create a ceremony that helped create a religious ceremony that fit our Jewish catholic interfaith egalitarian eco friendly fractured family situation. This book made me feel so supported, so creative, and inspired to create a ceremony that fulfills our legal requirements as well as our spiritual requirements. This is great for orthodox couples, reform, interfaith, gay/lesbian, secular, highly religious, and everyone in between. Love this book!!!
Gabrielle Kaplan-Mayer's book was incredibly helpful to me. My good friend asked me to officiate her wedding, and I honestly didn't know where to start. This book is informative, open-minded, thoughtfully written, and accessible. I was able to offer my friend and her fiancee informed choices about how they wanted things to go, and when it came to the day of, everything was fabulous!
Ms. Kaplan-Mayer has done a great service, not just to couples preparing for marriage, but for wedding officiants as well. All wedding officiants should have this excellent and timely book on their book shelf.
While helping my daughter plan her wedding this book was invaluable. Gives you many options of what's "supposed to take place" at a Jewish wedding, and also creative alternatives. Very helpful and a quick read. Use some of it or all of it!
My fiance is Jewish and I am not, and we were looking for a book that explained some of the Jewish traditions in a way that could be used in a mixed wedding. This book, however, is solely for an all-Jewish wedding and assumes a background knowledge about Judiasm that was not helpful for us. For example, we wanted an explanation of the meaning of the breaking of the glass that we could offer up to our guests, but the book just assumed people knew what the ritual was all about and did not offer much language we could use. I did give the book 3 stars because it seemed to be very open to variants of Jewish weddings (for more modern couples), but had no real info of use to me.
