Review

"In her important new book, The Rape of Nanking, Iris Chang, whose own grandparents were survivors, recounts the grisly massacre with understandable outrage."―New York Times"Chang's account, based on extensive interviews with survivors and newly discovered documents, is utterly compelling yet, at the same time, in places unbearable to read."―Foreign Affairs"Chang vividly, methodically, records what happened, piecing together the abundant eyewitness reports into an undeniable tapestry of horror."―Adam Hochschild, Salon"A powerful new work of history and moral inquiry. Chang takes great care to establish an accurate accounting of the dimensions of the violence."―Chicago Tribune"Iris Chang's research on the Nanking holocaust yields a new and expanded telling of this World War II atrocity and reflects thorough research. The book is excellent; its story deserves to be heard."―Beatrice S. Bartlett, professor of history, Yale University"Heartbreaking.... An utterly compelling book. The descriptions of the atrocities raise fundamental questions not only about imperial Japanese militarism but the psychology of the torturers, rapists, and murderers."―Frederic Wakeman, director of the Institute of East Asian Studies, University of California, Berkeley"Something beautiful, an act of justice, is occurring in America today concerning something ugly that happened long ago.... Because of Chang s book, the second rape of Nanking is ending."―George F. Will, syndicated columnist"In her important new book ... Iris Chang, whose own grandparents were survivors, recounts the grisly massacre with understandable outrage."―Orville Schell, The New York Times Book Review"Anyone interested in the relation between war, self-righteousness, and the human spirit will find The Rape of Nanking of fundamental importance. It is scholarly, an exciting investigation, and a work of passion. In places it is almost unbearable to read, but it should be readonly if the past is understood can the future be navigated."―Ross Terrill, author of Mao, China in Our Time, and Madame Mao

While reading the book "Killing the Rising Sun", Bill O’Rielly and Martin Dugard touched on the Japanese invasion of Nanking China in 1937. After a Vietnam vet friend told me some more history, “The Rape of Nanking” was a must read.I thought Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot had the corner market on human atrocities, but they had nothing compared to what the Japanese did at Nanking. Nearly 300,000 people raped, mutilated and murdered in a few weeks. A moral outrage of butchery of innocents and the savagery of the Japanese with indisputable evidence that went all the way up to the imperial family. The acts described in this book are revealing and revolting. The book is an excellent read, captivating and compelling including real life heroes that saved thousands of lives. I was surprised to see this is merely a footnote in history, rarely taught in school and rarely discussed in Japan. This book is truly a must read.

OMG, why hasn't this been taught to person's living in the US. I feel it's been swept under the rug..the atrocities and inhuman actions inflicted upon these people and the US role in allowing this to happen for so long. I experienced every emotion possible but happiness and joy wasn't one of them. Most of all my heart aches that more light hasn't been given to this..this...I don't even have the word to call it....Iris Chang was an amazingly talented soul and I know it must have been very difficult crawling through all this pain, agony, mire and muck to write this Life Story. I've also seen the movie...I can't remember the name of it for the life of me but it was gut wrenching but of course tailored down for viewer consumption so it doesn't capture the explicit pain detailed in this book. A must read for every human being!! Until we shed light in the dark places vile wars and act such as The Rape of Nanking will continue.

This seems to be a well researched and well documented book that stands as a testimony to the sheer brutality and savage nature of the Japanese who invaded China in the 1930's. By itself it is a shocking glimpse into the nature of WWII; indeed of all wars. Combined with the many other, well documented, instances of the brutality of the Japanese soldier, at all levels of command, its credibility is not in question. I am a veteran of 25 years of active duty military service, mainly Special Ops to include multiple tours in Vietnam, and still I am appalled at the levels of violence meted out to (mainly) Chinese civilians by the Japanese. The heroes in this tragedy were far outnumbered, and they knew that they were at the time, yet still they did more to alleviate the widespread suffering and degradation of the Chinese than one could ever imagine possible. To compound this travesty, and the countless other crimes incurred by prisoners of war and civilians at the hands of the Japanese military, very little was done to punish the guilty; much has been done to actually downplay the barbarity. I have no sympathy for the Japanese in the eventual devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The horrors visited on the citizens of Nanking by the invading Japanese is a World War II story that gets lost because of the events that took place in Nazi Germany. But the cruelty of the Japanese Military must not be forgotten. And unless we know about the events of that horrible period. The 1930's were horrible for China as Nanking finally fell to the Japanese in 1937. The Japanese were not routed from China until the end of World War II in 1945. For fourteen years, the domination of the Japanese military was market by indescribably ruthlessness. As soon as the capital city of Nanking fell to the Japanese, tens of thousands of young Chinese men were rounded up, herded to areas outside the city and mowed down by machine guns, were used for bayonet practice, or were doused in gasoline and burned alive. This book by Iris Chang provides only the barest summary of the barbaric acts perpetrated by the Japanese. The details of the Rape of Nanking are not in dispute, except among the Japanese who to this day refuse to acknowledge their vicious occupation and are in denial. This book is highly recommended to fill in gaps in our knowledge of atrocities that took place during this conflict. Man's inhumanity to man is evident on every page.

This is a memorable book! Well-written, brutally graphic at times, it provides a fine, readable account of this horrendous event in world history that has been successfully covered up and denied by perpetrators until recent years. It is not always easy reading, but I endorse its frankness if only to affirm the horrors of war. To read it, despite its brutal revelations, is to honor the memory of the dead who had to live it while we have to only read it.

This story of Japan's horrific attack on Nanking in the lead-up to World War II should be read by all those interested in history and especially World War II history. Iris Chang compellingly explores not only the hard-to-believe atrocities perpetrated by the brutal Japanese army but also the shameful coverup of the affair by the Japanese government. The author's sad demise is an unhappy footnote to her invaluable work.
