The Matzah Man: A Passover Story, by Naomi Howland

From Publishers Weekly

Howland (Latkes, Latkes, Good Enough to Eat) makes the story of the Gingerbread Man kosher for Passover in a picture book that improves with repeat readings. Set in an indeterminately old-fashioned community where ladies wear white gloves, hats and fox stoles to go shopping, the story opens as the baker has made a little man out of leftover matzoh dough. Here it is Cousin Tillie, sampling her tender brisket; Auntie Bertha, the shopper; Grandpa Solly, chopping onions for gefilte fish; Miss Axelrod, adding the last matzoh ball to a pot of chicken soup; and a variety of animals who chase after the impish Matzah Man. The storytelling seems attenuated the first time around but all those matzoh-chasers play a role in the satisfying surprise finale. Children will want to return to the beginning to see how neatly Howland sets up her premise. Collage elements (these create the Matzah Man) mingle unobtrusively with almost drab gouaches in the illustrations, which, despite their unprepossessing first impression, are crammed with lively details. From School Library Journal

reSchool-Grade 2--In this Passover version of the "Gingerbread Man," a baker makes his last bit of matzah dough into a tiny figure that proceeds to run away, chanting "Hot from the oven I jumped and ran,/So clever and quick, I'm the Matzah Man!" He encounters a variety of people and animals who enter into the cumulative chase, and each time he escapes, until young Mendel Fox convinces him to hide under the matzah cover, where he is broken and eaten by his pursuers. The simple story has a pleasant Jewish flavor, and the gouache, collage, and pencil illustrations are well rendered and amusing. The Matzah Man runs right out of the frames on several pages, and he is constantly in motion, keeping the tale flowing. While the author makes no attempt to explain the holiday, people acquainted with it will find plenty of familiar details, both in the text and in the paintings, including brisket, gefilte fish, and a beautifully set Passover table. Ultimately, this enjoyable tale would be a good addition to libraries looking to beef up their collections for their Jewish patrons.Amy Lilien-Harper, The Ferguson Library, Stamford, CTCopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

I actually bought this book b/c my 6 yr old son had checked it out from the library and kept repeating Matzah Man

we own many passover books and this one is by far my son's favorite. He is four years old. I highly recommend it!!

Well-written for reading out loud to younger children. Good pictures too. My 3-year old loves it - I suppose it helps that he loves eating Matzah too!

This book about the "matzah man" who jumps out of Mr. Cohen, the baker's, oven has plenty of fun repetition that toddlers find so enjoyable. The pictures are great as the story builds to the surprise climax. With a few different refrains that my 2 1/2 year old daughter loves repeating, the book is very participatory. We highly recommend it.

I bought this book because I (mis)heard the author's name on the radio and assumed this was a book by Laila Halaby, whose "Once in a Promised Land" I much admired. However, having read this novel, I'm very glad of my mistake. It is a fine piece of work, and adds to the store of novels which help define what it is to be American in this century.

I bought this book because the TODAY show featured it with a Moroccan brunch claiming the recipes would be available. There are no recipes and I never would have bought this book had I seen through their trickery.

My perspective on reading this book is to forgo guessing what is going to happen, or trying to determine how accurate your suspicions. Just dive in and let it gently steal through you. There’s a Who and Why regarding a hit-and-run that resulted in death, which is the ballast of the plot, at least in a pressing sense. The other characters are immediate family or characters connected to the family or incident in some way. “What a fragile thing a heart was. So easy to fool. To break. To stop on impact in a darkened intersection.”Moroccan-born Driss Guerraoui, a husband, father, and grandfather, is a diner owner in a small Mojave desert community. He’s also the victim of the hit-and-run, while walking to his car from work one evening. His two adult daughters and wife, Maryam, grieve in separate ways, often rupturing old wounds and inciting new ones. An undocumented worker, Efraín, witnessed the incident but is afraid to come forward. The primary protagonist, however, is Nora, Driss’ youngest (and favorite) daughter and the non-conformist of the two. She’s a jazz pianist and performer with more rejection notices than work; her mother pointedly and wearily saying “She has her head in the clouds,” a tired refrain to her daughter. Nora refuses to settle for a pragmatic, secure job, like her sister, the dentist. It was only her father that understood this, which makes his death even harder to bear.Returning to the Mojave for the funeral, feeling unmoored and paralyzed by her father’s death, Nora stays longer and begins a romance with a past schoolmate, Jeremy, an Iraqi war veteran-turned-cop, also a central character. They are very different people with allied needs, but Nora has difficulty trusting due to past struggles. The story highlights several ugly stereotypes without condescending to the reader. Driss, for example, is highly educated and an atheist, but is often referred to by others as “the Muslim.” Nora has been stymied and bullied by others since childhood, and finds solace in her music.Told in first-person POV, the various characters alternate with their own or overlapping stories. The theme is home, identity, and loss, and the title suggests the outliers, the outsiders, the “other” Americans. But a sharp pivot shattered me, also, that turns the title inside out and upside down—and that is all I will say. I read this in two days; the pages turn easily and the prose is strong and vivid. Lalami is superb at providing the fine points of a scene, the flourish of details that happen simultaneously, like the sound of keys jingling or a cat turning its head, all the while bolstering the scene at hand. It all hits hard and deep by the end. I'm in awe of her sympathy for all characters.

This book was fine. It didn't live up to the praise I had read, but it was still a good, solid book. It is the story of a hit and run against a Moroccan-American man and his daughter trying to come to grips with his death, her relationship to her mother, sister and the town she grew up in. It is written in the first person with each chapter a different POV. The POVs vary, Nora (one of the victim's daughter) and Jeremy (a high school friend and love interest) are the main characters with the most POV chapters. Other chapters include POVs from the victim, Driss (flashbacks obviously), Maryam (Nora's Mom), Efraim (an undocumented immigrant who witnesses the hit and run), Anderson (the owner of the neighboring bowling alley) and Coleman (the detective working the case). There are a couple of one of POVs from Anderson's son AJ and Nora's sister Salma. The POVs jump around between the past and present day to flesh out the characters and develop the relationships, giving us insights into what made them the characters we see in the present day.The technique of varying POVs can be interesting in that you can see the same event from several angles, but it's not my favorite form of storytelling, which could be why the book left me a little cold. It just seems like a lazy way to write, honestly. (That's totally my personal opinion. YMMV, of course.) It really took me awhile to get into this book, and I think the POV structure was part of it. In this particular book, I thought it jumped around too much and would throw in people just once (Nora's sister) and I wish we had seen more of them. The reader just gets a snippet of "Oh I guess her life is not peaches and cream after all" (which is how it appeared to Nora). But, like, it wasn't surprising that the sister's life wasn't picture perfect. Throwing in the POV helped flesh it out more, but then we don't hear from here again and we are left hanging. Similarly with Efrain, we see him a lot in the beginning and his struggles in not wanting to go to the police as a witness (as he is undocumented). We don't really learn much about him but when he finally does go to the police, we never hear from him again. I thought the author did a decent job of creating interesting characters and making me interested in them, but the plot was pretty predictable (granted I did not guess who the driver was correctly the first time). The love story was pretty standard. The murder mystery okay. It's basically "girl goes back to home town and finds herself" with a love interest from back in high school. For a second I thought this book was actually different in that it seemed like it was going to end leaving several loose threads (the hit and run "solved" but unsatisfactorily), the romance done, and the main character returning back to her life from before her father's death. But then it turns pretty predictable in, like, the last two chapters. There is an undercurrent (and sometimes, just plain current) of political commentary through the book on the Iraq War (bad), racism in small town America (definitely exists), and the difficulty of PTSD on returning vets. I liked these parts of the book more than the actual plot, honestly. Lalaimi is a very good writer. Her prose is descriptive, her characters well drawn, if not particularly original, "the rebel artistic child disappointing her Mom, but is she really disappointing her mom or is it just a failure to communicate?" type deal.Overall, I liked it. It was good, not great. A solid book.

I am not usually one for non-fiction but The Class was (if I may coin a word) unputdownable. The book tells the story of one year in a high school science class in Greenwich, Connecticut, and while that may seem like a dry subject, it was anything but. The author had an incredible ability to get you invested in the characters, who, in addition to being ambitious and driven budding scientists, are also teenage kids navigating social pressures, annoying parents, college applications, and all the other teenage experiences we all remember. The real genius of the book is that, because of the way that the characters are developed and you get to know them outside of the classroom, you actually end up deeply invested in the outcomes of their science projects too! And in framing the book around the "science fair circuit"--a series of high-stakes competitions that take place around the end of the school year--the author has managed to infuse the story with a compelling narrative arc, a brisk pace, and a satisfying coda. On top of that, she writes beautifully and the book is full of vivid descriptive passages that are still stuck in my head months after reading it. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

This is a wonderfully written book about an amazing teacher, ruined by extraneous snarky remarks against President Trump and the First Lady. These comments smack of coastal elitism and are served up without any context relating to the story being told.Authors need to understand that not all readers suffer from TDS. (trump derangement syndrome)

Great book on classrooms and impact of teachers - shows the power of legacy for getting into the Ivys.

In a troubled world it’s great to read about individuals who make a difference. Great teachers are under-appreciated. Andrew Bramante is a special influence professionally and personally. I’m lucky to know his family and admire their dedication to balancing education and family. These are remarkable kids Andy worked with and they all deserve recognition.

I read the book, it’s the best book I’ve never read before , anyway it’s the best book

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it is an excellent introduction to great teaching. In our modern educational debate, people suggest a number of things they hope will fix the problems in our education system: more funding, better teacher training, vouchers, more funding for charters, better accountability, common core, improved regulations, etc. None of these actually help students very much. The one thing that nearly always helps students--immediately and in a way that last--is better teaching. The Class does an excellent job of showing how great teaching works and how it can make a significant difference. Very worth reading. On the other hand, the system in which the book takes place is very disappointing. The focus of the students, and usually the teachers, in this book so often centers on winning contests, beating the competition posed by other students, impressing universities, and trying to win more contests. Most of the time, when a contest is mentioned, the amount of money the student can win is immediately listed. In this version of education, contests and winning money are the center of the whole educational experience. And parents are just as focused on this as students and most teachers. A love of learning, the joy of knowledge, ideas, gaining wisdom, trying to learn about the most important things in history and life--these are hardly mentioned. As if they aren't even a part of learning. Disappointing. If this really is the modern schooling system, and if this is what school is like for the "best of the best" in America's award-winning schools and classrooms, our nation is in trouble. Almost nothing about great learning or great ideas. It's all winning awards and trying to impress others. Mostly devoid of entrepreneurship, innovation, or leadership education. The focus is conveyor belt, factory-style schools. And ribbons. Learning isn't the point; just checking off bureaucratic boxes, winning awards, and trying to out-impress "the other drones". Sorry to say it so bluntly, and maybe the students covered in the stories don't experience it this way (I hope not), but this is how it felt reading the book. Sad.Of course, someone is going to say: "That's reality. That's just the way education is today. Get real." I know this is true in many, perhaps most, schools. But that's even more sad. I think the role of great teachers should be to help students see past the conveyor-belt drive to win awards and to discover the greatness of loving to learn. Maybe that's too idealistic. But still: Carpe Diem. I think, reading between the lines, that this is the kind of teacher Andy (the main character in the book) is in real life. That's why he's had such success, I bet. I just wish the story would have showed more of this. Still, it's a great read. Anyone interested in education will find this a valuable resource.

The Time Out series is really appropriate for certain destinations, and Buenos Aires is definitely one of them - why? Because T.O. keeps the sightseeing & history to a compact section. They focus on the real charm of BA - its lifestyle - food, wine, tango, an obscenely and wonderfully late club culture, futbol and so forth. I was really pleased with the recommendations (I never use these guides for hotels anyhow). The book is colorful, the maps & practical information are decent, and most of all its a travel guide that isn't completely "dry", but fairly witty and engaging. All in all for a city like BA, the Time Out series is exactly what you'll need to have a great time. - one point for the fact that they sell advertising throughout the guide. I just don't accept that in a book I am buying!

I love the TimeOut series, and the one for Buenos Aires is very good. I lived in Buenos Aires, and I can say that this does a good job identifying restaurants, bars, things to do, etc.

Giving good information for the city; good suggestions for touring here.

This book has great information, but I felt like I had to wade through it a bit to find what I was interested in.

Time Out Buenos Aires should be bought just for the restaurant reviews. The whole book is great, clear and concise. Photos and maps very clear.

The first Time Out guide I purchased, I actually ended up in places that did not have droves of folks in their 50s waving Lonely Planet guides around, looking as if it was their first time outside their home country. Truly, I don't mean to belittle them... in fact, I admire anyone who steps out of their comfort zone. BUT the point of buying this seemingly edgy, trendy guide was to go off the beaten track, given there are always going to be sights/clubs/things in cities world wide that are universal, and (if one lives in a large enough city) one does not need to travel out of your own city to experience them; the whole point was to find out what makes the new city just that much quirkier or different than your own. Sadly, this book did not accomplish that. The restaurant recommendations were bleh 80% of the time, shopping recommendations were clearly skewed towards boutiques that seemed to have the money to advertise with them (and fairly stodgy stuff as well), and there were no great insights provided that one could not gather from any other guide, or from reading a few travelers' blogs. Buy it if you don't like to leave home without a guide, but don't kid yourself that it's better than the others out there.

Time Out guides are excelente. The only problem is that you do not inform the year itwas published. The one I bought was in 2012, so it is a little outdated.Best regards,Ricardo Marcondes.

Lots of useful information with contacts and directions. Good for a week long visit. Not too much background and history though.
